If you’ve read one or two Betty Neels’ books, then you know the course all of her books will follow because she use same two plots over and over with some minor twists. They are mostly light romances and very much of their time. The women are usually nurses. The men are doctors, often Dutch, large and mid-30s to early 40s. Because they are products of their times — this book was written in 1975 — women shop, worry about their clothes and hair, and about trivia. The doctors are all men, even the trainee doctors. Even in 1975, when I was 12 I found that unacceptable. But if you treat Neels’ books as the historical relics that they are, you end up with some sweet romances. And this one certainly was.The other thing you have to accept with Neels us that as soon as both the hero and heroine declare their love for each other, the book ends immediately, abruptly, in a most unsatisfying manner. They would have been vastly improved by having an epilogue. All of that said, after finding a few of her books in my online public library, I find that I keep rereading them. They are light and quick, and except for a few nasty moments from some of the heros (nasty in terms of verbal rather than physical things) fun.

... and Radmer said, "I once said you were a girl who would never reach for the moon, dearest Lavinia, but you will have no need to do that, for I intend to give it to you - I'll throw in the sun and the stars for good measure." Lavinia is described as average looking - neither pretty or plain. She takes a job in Amsterdam and soon meets, and makes quite an impression on the handsome, reclusive and lonely Radmer. She has a tendency to speak her mind and doesn't allow anyone to walk all over her. Radmer is 15 years her senior and proposes a marriage for his convenience. She accepts knowing she loves him and even though everyone including him hints that it wasn't a happy union, Lavinia believes she can't compete with some great mythical love he must have had for his first wife. Finally, he tells her he loves her and wants theirs to be a real marriage. Ms Neels is a great teacher on life, love and relationships. Here she reminds us to stop day dreaming about how things ought to be and pay attention to how things are. Love is not always a grand gesture. Sometimes it's an accumulation of small heartfelt moments. Buying her a car? Not that big a deal. Telling her he is lonely? A big deal. Getting your sister out of a lousy situation so you'll fall in with his plans? Not a big deal. Treating your sister just as well as he treats his precious daughter? A big deal.

Book Description: AN OFFER SHE COULDN'T REFUSE... A nursing job in Holland was the only way Lavinia Hawkings could ensure a home and security for herself and her young sister Peta. Yet within weeks of arriving she was married to the devastating Professor Radmer ter Bavinck! Radmer had assured Lavinia that the marriage would be on a friendly basis only -- he needed a kind stepmother for his daughter and a competent housekeeper to run his home. It seemed to be the ideal arrangement -- for everyone except Lavinia! This is another Neels Cinderella tale involving a Rich, Good-looking Dutch Doctor and a Plain British Nurse. A beautiful daughter and younger sister as well as Radmer's parents are able to see what Radmer and Lavina fail to see or refuse to admit while an evil aunt substitutes for the evil step-mother. The story involves misconceptions, self-image and self-worth, and allowing while accepting love. After reading reviews I decided to skip this book but purchased it later. The first time I read it I liked it but not as much as some of the other works. I read the book again later, a little more objectively this time, and was glad I did. Some things are better the second time around.

I like all the old fashioned sweet romances by Betty Neels. I read them all many years ago and am now reading them for the 2nd and even 3rd times on my Kindle. She wrote them all on a formula. Usually a romance between a Dutch doctor or professor and an English young lady. There is always some type of conflict that has to be settled before the happily ever after. No violence and no sexual content.

I have been buying Betty Neels books for my mother (in her 70's) at her request, as an introduction to using a Kindle. I can say without hesitation that she loves all of these books. As she has said, "The plots may all be somewhat similar and the stories quaint, but I enjoy them immensely and find them endearing." What better recommendation could there be? She now has almost every Betty Neels book available for the Kindle. (And the Kindle Paperwhite? She loves the backlight and the ability to make the font larger.)

If you enjoy your romances clean, light, fluffy and vintage then you will enjoy the wonderful work of Betty Neels

I enjoyed reading this book and I loved every part of it.The Author has done a great job in writing this book.

The usual story line with English nurse and Dutch doctor. Sweet story filled with nice people. Glad that I took the time to read it.

Great book for those who suffer not only suffer from addiction, but also behavioral and\or emotional issues. This book follows the typical 12 step format. It is comprehensive, yet easy to understand, as it is written in a more modern dialect. Concepts and terms are much more likely to make sense and be more relatable compared to other 12 step literature. One great feature is there is no awkward feeling at the continual reference to "God", as often written in similar types of books. It can be hard for those who are not a Christian, Those who are of a different belief\religion, Nonbelievers, or Those still seaching, to always read the word "God" in their journey through sobriety. In this book, the word "God" has been replaced with "Higher Power" or the acronym G.O.D, (meaning Good Orderly Direction). While spirituality is central to the majority of 12 step programs, this book gives you the freedom to choose for yourself what, if anything, to believe in.I would highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with a dual illness, as well as family and friends who are looking to further understand what it all means. I believe it would also be beneficial for individuals who have previously read 12 step literature or participated in a 12 step program, as this book makes understanding it all a bit easier.*There is also a workbook (not included), that follows each step and helps to put what you have read into action, as well as give you the opportunity to reflect and personalize your interpretation of the book with simple questions and exercises. Would highly recommend as a companion to this book

If you're in recovery & familiar with any of the many fellowships' versions of the Twelve Steps, you'll feel at home in this fellowship's version, too. This arrangement of the Twelve Steps concepts blends mental illness recovery alongside recovery from substance abuse- It's probably not necessary to note that all addictive concerns follow similar routes in recovery, no matter how different they might have looked when first entering change. (I'm noting this though! For me, so-called Dual Recovery encompasses any & all action or substance that's become a unsustainable vehicle for using & abusing.)A lovely additional focus of this Twelve Steps book is an emphasis on looking at our plusses as well as our deficits, which most of us who've dealt with half a deck really need to hear on a regular basis. We usually are far too focused on how awful we are when first coming out of the darkness! And I don't just mean the basic accentuation of gratitude, though of course that's in there, too. I mean deliberately balancing what's generally become a spavined view of ourselves & the hard-to-take world around us, by searching out & enjoying our positive qualities at the very same time we're confronting having to let go of our "less-than-positive" horrible sides. One way to share this book is to read it with others in a meeting format, each reading as much or as little as works for them, then commenting on what is stirred up for them, rather than trying to finish each chapter in an hour. That way, anyone who is willing to talk can, rather than having to wait until everything's been read- & possibly already forgotten by those with shorter attention spans! Just let each step roll out gradually, and the group will eventually cover it all, just as each of us does individually, in living with Higher Power in this new conscious fashion.

I bought this book for my cousin who is in a mental institution after a 4-day binge drunk when he held up a gas station. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder... and he was also an alcoholic. He started AA while in the mental institution and he's really get a lot out of it. I thought this book would help him along the way as it deals with the mental illness aspect along with the alcoholic part. He loved it! He read it in no time and said that he had a lot of stuff highlighted in the book. A lot of it he could relate to. I'm so happy that I was able to find him this book that will hopefully help him along his recovery.

I enjoyed the read of this book. It gave me a few new ideas. I often think I am an outcast at AA meetings when I have also have another mental diagnosis. But now I do not feel the same way.

Very useful in developing a presentation on treating clients with the Dual Disorders of Addiction and Mental Disorders. I use the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous in my personal life as well as my counseling clients with addictive disease - this book helps expand my current knowledge into the area of treating the Dual Disorder client

Simple and direct. I keep buying it for others, too. and they are always grateful after they start reading.

This is a book that makes sense. So much better for me that the AA 12 step book. Dual Diagnosis uses the same 12 steps as AA only this books explains things a lot differently. I am reworking the steps using this book. I am also purchasing 2 more for other people who are also dually diagnosed.

Sometimes reading the 12 & 12 can be rather intimidating. When you have a dual disorder, it can seem overwhelmingly impossible, at least to me! This book gently guided me through it and also prepared for some of the "book thumpers" reactions to me and also finding the right sponsor and it has mad ALL the difference. A keeper for me and a re- reader.

Review

"This incredible story, which plunges us immediately into the bloodiest aspects of the war, is also a suspenseful autobiography that will keep you chewing your fingernails to see if Van Devanter survives any of it at all. She proves herself a natural storyteller. . . . The most extraordinary part in this book is Van Devanter's plight after the war―her attempt to retrieve the love of her family, only to realize they don't want to see her slides, hear her stories; her assignment to menial duties at Walter Reed Army Hospital. . . . How Van Devanter survives all of this to become, incredibly, a stronger person for it is what makes her book so riveting."―San Francisco Chronicle"An awesome, painfully honest look at war through a woman's eyes. Her letters home and startling images of life in a combat zone―surgeons fighting to save a Vietnamese baby wounded in utero, the ever-present stench of napalm-charred flesh, a beloved priest's gentle humor and appalling death, the casual heroism of her colleagues, a Vietnamese 'Papa-san' trying to talk his dead child back to life, a haunting snapshot dropped by a dying soldier with no face―tell the story of a young American's rude initiation to the best and the worst of humanity."―Washington Post"Moving, powerful . . . a healing book."―Ms. Magazine"This book reads like a diary: unguarded, heartfelt. . . . [It] is both moving and valuable, for reminding us so vividly that war is indeed hell . . . and that its most tested heroes are the doctors and nurses who doggedly labor not just to save life, but also to keep their respect for it, even as their surviving patients are sent out, once more, unto the breach."―Harper's Magazine"In Vietnam, reality hit fast: Van Devanter's plane was fired on when it landed in Saigon; and after three days of adjustment, she was assigned to the 71st Evacuation Hospital, a 'MASH-type facility' near the Cambodian border. There, the casualties, . . . the personal danger, the fatigue, the heat, rain, and mud, the harassment of officers enforcing petty regulations, and above all the meaninglessness of American involvement rapidly put an end to Van Devanter's blind patriotism, her innocence, and her youth. . . . Van Devanter brings us face to face with the toll that undeclared war took on its combatants."―Kirkus Reviews"If you read only one work about Vietnam, make this the one. . . . This is the way it was, as seen through the eyes of an army second lieutenant when she was twenty-two. I believe her completely, because this reviewer remembers Vietnam the same way, when he was a nineteen-year-old Marine PFC."―Deseret Sentinel

That's the question Lynda Van Devanter asks over and over in the course of this memoir, the centerpiece of which is her year (June 1969 to June 1970) as a surgical nurse in Vietnam, principally at the 71st Evacuation Hospital, Pleiku. She went to Vietnam a relatively carefree, healthy twenty-two-year-old. She returned damaged on the inside, both psychologically and physically. She died in 2002 at age fifty-five from an autoimmune, collagen-vascular disorder caused by exposure to toxic chemicals in Vietnam. Yet one more casualty of America's adventure in Vietnam. And for what?Outside the personal realm of family and friends, Van Devanter had three notable accomplishments in her life about which she could be proud. The first consists of her work as an extremely dedicated nurse, both in Vietnam (where in addition to American soldiers her patients also included Vietnamese soldiers and citizens) and back home in the U.S. over a two-decade nursing career. For some of those patients she was the person most responsible for saving their life. Her second notable achievement was as National Women's Director of the Vietnam Veterans of America, where she was instrumental in raising recognition of the contributions of women Vietnam veterans and in securing benefits for them. Third, there is HOME BEFORE MORNING, which deserves a place in any collection of Vietnam memoirs, especially because it is from a relatively unknown and unappreciated perspective.Van Devanter went to war as a gung-ho believer in the United States and its war in Vietnam. Disillusionment came gradually, but it had enveloped her midway through her year in-country. It was due largely to repeated encounters with devastating, gruesome wounds, some of which are horrifically detailed in the book. The hardest to deal with were the crispy critters - those charred by napalm, surely one of humankind's most insidious inventions. One can easily understand a surgeon muttering, after operating non-stop amidst blood and moans and screams for forty-eight hours, "I'd like to have Richard Nixon here for one week." Compounding the surreal hellishness of Van Devanter's year in Nam was the bureaucratic ineptitude, stupidity, and callousness so pervasive in the U.S. military.HOME BEFORE MORNING was first published in 1983, qualifying it, to quote another reviewer, as "the grandmother of female Viet Nam accounts". This 2001 edition from the University of Massachusetts Press includes an eight-page afterword by Van Devanter, written shortly before she died. The book is very easy to read, although the writing is somewhat slick and conventional, often using rather stock formulations (e.g., "I'd be lying if I said there aren't still difficult times"). Much of the dialogue obviously was reconstructed or re-imagined, and there are internal indications that some of the events themselves may to some extent have been fabricated. I see that several other reviews or the comments to them claim that some of the incidents in the book are either exaggerated or happened to someone else. Still, I tend to believe that on the whole HOME BEFORE MORNING is a realistic portrayal of a surgical nurse in a field hospital in Vietnam, and as such it is worth reading.

Tells of the perils that all endured during the Viet Nam conflict. Suffering is Suffering!! Without the nurses and the gentleness, professionalism and caring there would have been many more Casuaities. I SALUTE ALL THE FEMALES THAT TOOK CARE OF US. Excellent Book

Having enlisted just as the last American military members were being evacuated from Vietnam, I have always wondered what it was really like for a woman serving during this campaign. This book literally shocked my socks off and opened my eyes! Ms. Van Devanter's writing style relays the raw truth of her experience and is written is such a way as to create vivid pictures in my mind as I read through this book. The accuracy of her story has been confirmed to me by other Vietnam Veterans who were there. It should be a full scale movie, not just the basis for a TV Show (China Beach). It is heart wrenching, dramatic and very emotionally moving. She was a true hero in my view. I am sad that I did not have a chance to meet her before she left this life. Rest In Peace Lt. Lynda Van Devanter - you have my respect and admiration. If have ever wanted to experience the reality of Vietnam, you should read this book!

Not my favorite on Vietnam, never-the-less Lynda provides a unique first person perspective on adversity and the outrageous conditions the trauma response teams experience at the operating tables, from piecing guys back together from battle wounds to wounds from tigers, it helps communicate the meaning of the 'Back in the World' feeling and the giant sucking sound of the war trying to pull you back into it as you board your chopper ride out on your last day in hell. I was left feeling 'glad it was not me' and some empathy for Lynda who I felt cracked to some degree from the experiences.

This book tells a side of the Vietnam story that isn't frequently told. Van Devanter tells the story simply, yet compellingly. I had read this book when it was first published, loaned it to a relative, who loaned it to someone else, who lost it. I liked it enough to purchase it again (at a higher price for the paperback than the original hardback)! When I recently read the book, I enjoyed it as much as I did back in the early 80s. Having just read an obituary of Lynda Va Devanter from the New York Times, I realized that "Home Before Morning," was one of the inspirations for the TV series "China Beach." I highly recommend this book.

One of the most incredible books I have read in a very long time. I simply couldn't put it down. This is an excellent glimpse of history through the eyes of a once carefree, brilliant, young woman. She sets off on an exciting journey as a military nurse only to be thrust into the chaos of war in Vietnam. She is candid, funny, and keeps your interest throughout the entire story. I cried at the horrors she experienced and felt as though I was standing right there in her shoes as she told the story. A very good read.

The beginning is very boring in the beginning but was so interesting once she went across seas. Don't judge it by the beginning it's definetly worth the read.

This is a well plotted legal thriller. Written in the first person by "Terry," the central character is Vernon James, a self made multi-millionaire.After a long night in a hotel where James was collecting an ethics award, James is accused of murdering a woman in his hotel suite. There is a lot of action in the hours leading up to the murder and a lot of action after. Terry, an underachiever, is a recent hire as a clerk in a prestigious law firm. For no apparent reason, he is loathed by his co-workers but championed by his boss, Janet. In what he believes is a fluke, Terry is assigned to assist Janet as she tries to defend James.Terry and Vernon James have a history. Terry, a recovering alcoholic, was kicked out of Cambridge, an event which haunts him and for which he blames James. There are more twists and turns in this novel than a Swiss secondary road, some of which lead exactly nowhere but some of which lead everywhere. It's a fun read and that's a good thing because the text is so replete with terrible sentence structure and grammatical errors that one might have been tempted to toss it after a chapter or two based on the deplorable editing. If you can get around that, it's worth the effort

This is a long book, 2 MP3 disks. Really interesting story that kept me listening even though I didn't really like any of the characters, and that usually makes me abandon a book. I didn't like the accent the reader used for the main character and several other big characters. Perhaps it was realistic, but it really grated on my ears--a low-class accent. The main character was working in a law office as a temp, but as the story went on, he became part of a major criminal defense and met with the defendant, various other barristers, and judges and I wondered if such an accent wouldn't be an issue is such a situation. I am not an expert on British accents, but I have never heard a British person pronounce the name Terry as Terrah. If the character was posh, the accent the reader used was good.I thought the work-related interplay was excellent.I also thought that the investigation overlooked some obvious things.

To me this was a great, long, enjoyable story. I listened to the audible version on my commutes and read some on it in between. I enjoyed the main character as he learned about the law and I was interested til the end. A good solid read!

This is the first book I have read by this author. I saw he had written more books which I plan to order. His book is a real page Turner which keeps your interest from the beginning until the end. Sometimes I could feel my heart rate going up. If you are searching for a great legal novel I highly recommend this book. I can hardly wait to read another book written by him. That is why I gave him 5 stars!!!!!

Liked most: Character development of Christine, one of the few characters I cared what happened to her one way or the other.Liked least. Stone failed to develop characters I cared anything about. He totally failed to live up to the title he chose, leaving me indifferent about "The Verdict" i.e., whether Vernon James was found innocent or guilty. Generally poor character development. Rambling, disjointed plot.

I have not read anything by this author before but will look for him now. Story has lots of twists and turns. Takes place in 2011 and incorporates some history from that time. Protagonist is not so much a hero as a believable character, well developed.

I prefer American legal thrillers so I hesitated before buying The Verdict. I am so glad I bought it as it is such a page-turner.The main character was on track to a promising career when he is expelled from Cambridge. His best friend framed him. Now the friend needs his help to fight a charge of murder. The plot is complex and unpredictable with a satisfying conclusion.

THE VERDICT was not a novel I would normally have chosen, but I'm now glad I did. The twists and turns kept me interested even after the jury's verdict was read in court.
