Reading this book, I found I was looking for ice floes while driving down the street to the grocery. At the grocery, I considered food that could be preserved for a year. I was even looking strangely at my dog, and I love my dog.Endurance was one of the best books I've ever read.

Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened from? A nightmare so bad that you felt deep consternation even after waking up from it. Quite glad did you become when realization came to you that it was just a dream - now you were in your warm bed, and you are safe. This book is the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 27 men. The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). Very interesting is it to know the crew survived between the wreckage of their ship, Endurance, and their rescue only though tough endurance, so shows their story from this book. The author of this book, Alfred Lansing, was a journalist all his life. He has done a great job at compiling official sail records, each crew's journal, background world’s history, personal interviews, ship's manufacture features, and all the information relevant to Endurance and expedition. Through this book will you gain many new perspectives in respect to this expedition, if you already knew their story. If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.

What a page turner. Lansing is a master for the description of those explorers hardships, desire to follow Shacketon' orders. I kept saying to myself that there are few humans today that are as tough as those men. I recommend this book to add to the collection of those books that give us the knowledge of what it takes to conquer a goal.

The greatest adventure story of all time. Simply amazing. Purchase the hardcover 100th anniversary edition, that was just published. The actual photographs of the Endurance stuck in the ice are worth the price of the new edition. I have read this book several times overthe years and it never fails to excite.

I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island. That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. I’ve read a number of stories of survival and would rate this as the best of all I have read. This is one of the great adventure stories of our time. Don’t miss it.

Gorgeous book with fun illustrations. I bought this book as a gift for my 1.5 year old toddler. It's a great way to introduce children to Arabic and Islam. It's hard to find books geared towards young toddlers.

hadeel abbasi is one of my favorite children books authors.the Arabic/English text in the book makes it friendly for both an Arabic and and English speaking child.my baby loves this book.I always buy 10 copies of this book at a time and give it away as gifts for friends and familywhat is so good about this book is how it focuses on bringing up a balanced child, and a good person at heart. together with smart and beatiful illustrations that complement the text.

i loved the quality of the book and the drawings are so attractive but there is not that much in the book to read, every two pages has two sentences thats all....maybe because its for beginners reading

Simple and sweet. My 4 yr old loves it! I wish there were more pages it’s a bit too short. I like the illustrations . Very good Muslim children book.

The book has creative drawing great quality and packaging, book is big hardcover ! Great to look at but not much to learn from it should be mentioned that book has almost nothing to read , most of the book drawing, so that like mostly for less than kindergarten kidsIt has 9 pages that has one sentence in arabic \english

My husband speaks Arabic and even though he knows English, it is not easy for him to read. I speak English and I am only learning to read Arabic, so this book helps me! Our 4 children like when Momma can read the story in English and Baba can read the story in Arabic

Very sweet book.

The illustration, the quality, the message!!!! What a book! Highly recommended for all ages! Great job!

I dragged my feet on starting this book, because I felt pretty lukewarm toward its predecessor, The Killing Moon. Once I finally started on this one, however, I just really wanted to know what was happening. This one is about so many things. I will talk about it as best I can without spoilers. There's a heavy theme of being a fish out of water, getting to know other cultures and unlearning some prejudices. The author is deeply talented at creating a setting and a complex, alien culture that makes sense to the reader and feels believable. Thinking more deeply about right and wrong, and considering that the things that are right within one person's culture can be horrifying to an outsider. There is a lot about gender roles, exploring if a person can take on a role typically seen as belonging to the other gender, while maintaining one's on gender identity. There is a love story between two complicated, emotionally damaged characters who are still discovering their own needs and feelings. It also felt believable to me. There was melancholy in it, but this author does not seem to write typical happily ever after stories.Another major theme in this book, I'd say the most important one, is coping with abuse, and trying to heal from it. Horrific abuse is alluded to in this story, involving a small child, and particularly sensitive readers may find it deeply upsetting. It isn't graphic, but it doesn't need to be to get across the sadness and horror.I have not been so emotionally destroyed by the ending of a book since I gave up reading John Steinbeck. But unlike what turned me away from Steinbeck, not every outcome in this book is negative. There is a great deal of tragedy and sorrow, but there is also forgiveness, understanding, and hope.

From my Goodreads review: An excellent follow-up to "The Killing Moon," set in the same world but about 10 years later. Much has changed in the world, and the book mostly follows characters who were only ancillary in TKM, so there are plenty of new ideas and new stories to tell while keeping the flavor and the writing style of the first book. Jemisin's system of dream magic is explored from a different, and equally fascinating, angle. Her characters continue to feel genuine and their relationships respond to the harrowing challenges (and a few silly human foibles) of their world in interesting ways. There is no idealized society or perfect hero in this story, as easy as it would have been to make either one. The climax is exciting and the denouement is gratifying. I had no idea how Jemisin could follow TKM, which I thought was unique and remarkable, and while TSS isn't quite as tight it is a very satisfying successor. 4.5 stars

Seriously, read her stories with a highlighter in hand. Her characters are alive, you will miss them, hate them, cheer for them and yearn for them long after you've finished the story. She also seamlessly weaves relevant, very present themes of social justice into her narrative in striking ways. Some that are obvious, some that will catch you slipping, bringing tears to your eyes. Long story longer, read this author. Everything. Everything she's ever written. This, here, is the second book in the Dreamblood duology. As of 2/16/19, I have not yet begun reading this story because I am still reading the first. And I am excited to get to part two. And I am already mourning the duology's close ("PLEASE NEVER END") ...Ahem. Get this book after you get the first book and read it from cover to cover. Then read yet another book by NK JEMISIN. Never stop reading NK JEMISIN. When you complete all her stories (and essays and blog entries and online stories), read them all again. And don't forget your highlighter!

It’s been probably a few years since I read book one and I was not as lost as I feared. 10 years after the Gatherer Ehiru saved Hananja’s City at the cost of his own life and their occupation by outsiders, the son of the of Prince, gathers an army to reclaim it. But in the City of Dreams, a new sleeping sickness spreads even as the nobility gathers to overthrow their protectors. I loved this story, not least because of poor Hanani, who reminds me too much of myself, and Wanahomen, brave and fiercely loving. I wish I could have followed their story for longer. It’s a shame to let this universe go but it has been a good run. Totally recommend.

This is a deep, thought provoking, imagery based novel which opened up deep questions about the power to heal, the power of self, dealing with grief, finding of self and acknowledgement and acceptance of gifting. This novel had the reader hooked from the beginning, having read Book 1, I could not see where the author would go next but in reading The Shadowed Sun I saw how the author looked at Gujareet ten years hence, the division, the turmoil but the underlying desire to get it back to its original standing by fair means or foul. An excellent read, totally enjoyable for me, highly recommended!!
