It's not that the information in the book is wrong or of low quality, and I'm sure other people will find this useful, but I found it quite user unfriendly. It's lists of things in cities, with sterile explanations that didn't make me feel any more knowledgeable about the country than I was before. It feels like a computer wrote this book. There are many beautiful, full-color pictures, but they take up too much space, and really hinder the guide's flow and continuity. I didn't need more than a handful, at all. They're eye candy. I wound up using TripAdvisor instead. I've used the Lonely Planet books for Australia and Iceland, and I really wish I'd just bought their book for Germany instead, but I wanted to try something different.

Eyewitness is my preferred travel guide for history and sights over alternative brands of travel book.It doesn't have all the hotel and restaurant info that some of the others do, but that kind of info gets out of date so quickly and can all be found online.I'm pretty sure the restaurants and places listed in these books will be around for years to come. Most of the info is about structures and attractions which don't change very often. The pull-out maps are quite handy if you can bring yourself to actually tear them out of the book!I read through these at home but am going to purchase the Kindle versions for use on my iPad mini while traveling.

Very disappointed with this book.I bought the same author but for Netherlands and Amsterdam and loved the information and maps. This one is not good. There are no walking maps. The maps are missing some of the museums and castle locations. The writing is so faint in color its hard to read. It needs to be in bold black ink. Not good road maps. It should have more pictures of things. I feel I want to see the items its talking about but I will have no clue until I arrive. Not good restaurant information and not alot of choices. Its like they wanted people to pay them to be in his book instead of reviewing what was around. It did give me a few suggestions and I will follow them in what to visit but over all im disappointed with Germany.

I have long loved the Eyewitness travel guides so this was my first choice. I am specifically traveling to Munich and Nuremberg. Munich is merely 34 pages and so many places are missing from mention. Also in the where to stay section there are only 12 hotels listed for Munich when I know there are hundreds! S I very quickly realized that this book is very far from what I need and want. Clearly I will have to buy city specific travel guides. I wish I had looked at the book sooner - too late for me to return it now. Anyone want mine? I will not even bring it with me.

I have purchased a number of these guides as well as other publishers, but these are my favorite.

This is an example of beautiful publishing. It is a joy to use. Makes other travel books look archaic! I have converted to Eyewitness Travel.

This guide book is informative and full of glossy pictures. It explains Germany and its history/culture very nicely. But it doesn't provide too many helpful tips for the lay traveler. It's also heavy heavy heavy! I had to leave it behind near the end of my two week trip. By then, I was choke full of history and my shoulder couldn't handle the extra weight. Sad b/c it wasn't cheap and I would have liked to keep it as a reference book.

Eyewitness always does a very nice treatment of the target country. For me this was more of a planning/what's possible book than an actual guidebook you would carry along with you (it's a bit heavy). Use Rick Steve's for that. I seem to remember being more impressed with the first one I bought years ago (France), the one on Germany had plenty of pictures, but many of them seemed very tiny, almost like thumbnails, making it hard to appreciate the subject. Nevertheless, a great reference for planning a trip, and highly recommended.

For those of us who have followed Amory Lovins career, this book should be the overview of years of research on the shift to a sustainable society. It is partly that, but also a long-winded pep-talk that the transition is immenently possible in the constraints of our for-profit economic system. The book's centerpiece is the vision at the beginning of Chapter 6 of society in 2050 in which cars are vastly lighter and more efficient, though even more peppy and fun, production processes are close to their theoretical efficiency limits thanks to innovation, food is locally grown, people live much closer to their work, the electrical grid is decentralized and more reliable, and so on, all because it costs less this way than the world we live in today. Lovely, but everyone reading the book who is aware of Amory Lovins' 40-year career on promoting these ideas can and should ask, if it is vision is realistica, why has it not happened? The answer is not necessarily found in the book. While it abounds with success stories of people making money off of increased efficiency through introduction of currently available technologies, integrative design of buildings, rethinking of transport, and decentralization of the power grid, one cannot avoid the suspicion that these are but exceptions to the rule of our resource- and energy-intensive society. Of course, real evidence of a genuine transition can be found in some of the ~800 citations, particularly those pointing to RMI publications over the years. Thus, the reader who looks for objective view should consider this book as a starting point for extensive reading of informative (but admittedly dry) scientific articles.Lovins owes us a more introspective analysis on why this transition has not been a no-brainer and is not now in full swing. The authors have intersperse comments about this, as well as a section on "Barriers to Reinventing Fire". Rightly so, but they would better serve their cause by writing a chapter, or better yet a full book, on these counteracting these hurdles. Consider some simple questions: o Of course there is intense passive and active resistance by actors with vested interests. How do humankind build up a critical mass of endorsement of the vision which overcomes it? o Naturally businessmen and politicians take the short-term view for quarterly profits or the next election. How to we redirect our society to demand long-term profits and leadership? o Currently, China spends about 6.5% of GDP on combatting the effects of pollution on public health (source: Rand Corporation). And despite this it is difficult for leaders to quantify the benefits of better health and education. How do we give value to these 'intangibles'? o Many, many people would like to believe the vision, in particular the idea that the same or better quality of life can be far less damaging to the environment. But we today we are faced with consumer choices which are still carbon-intensive. How on earth is it possible to acquire more efficient options, while still enjoying the same level of mobility, life quality, and recreation, without somehow introducting a carbon tax? o And many of those people would like to join this efficiency revolution -- which requires expertise across the spectrum -- but we are constrained by simple realities of having to provide for your families. Where are the jobs in this multi-trillion dollar economy?"Reinventing Fire" is still a good compendium of years of research by the RMI, and makes valid arguments that there can be viable business solutions for a energy-frugal society. While the authors make it plausible, they are not still are not able to paint the path to overcome our own inertia.

I was reluctant to order the Kindle edition as a reviewer had suggested is was "unreadable". That problem apparently has been solved as of December 2015. It reads perfectly on my standard Kindle. The sidebars have a colored background. It's easily legible, at standard or slightly larger type fonts and with a black, sepia or white background. This is a very large book, the kindle edition makes a great deal of practical sense and is a bargain. Do NOT, repeat, do NOT hesitate to purchase the kindle edition. As far as the content goes...Dr. Lovins has the sharpest critical analysis of this issue, the central one affecting our planet, completely data based, exhaustively researched, and his message is simple. Politics won't solve our problem, capitalism just might. Put a profit margin in the problem and stand back, engineers and businessmen from around the world will attack it without mercy, and the winners will make a fortune.

The book is not perfect, but its scale and the amount of work that went into it is incredible. There are over 750 references and the bibliography represents a lifetime of energy reading and research. The book provides an optimist's vision of American and global energy generation and energy efficiency strategies leading to an ideal mix by 2050. Lovins lays out the big picture of how this is possible, economically advantageous, and even probable. Best of all, Lovins stays apolitical - my favorite quote is "we just need to stop insisting that others embrace our differing why and together get on with doing the shared what." He stays positive throughout and insists that reducing CO2 emissions (through efficiency and smarter fuels/grids) and increasing the use of renewables is good business for America and the developing world. I hope he's right.Lovins picks winners though, he clearly is not a believer in nuclear power's usefulness and lays out a compelling case for his position. He also incorporates biofuels into his vision without making a solid case for how. Lovins also takes some creative liberties in applying the costs of hidden subsidies to fossil fuels - suggesting that the entire bill for CENTCOM and all conflicts in the Middle East should be added to the price of oil.The book is sometimes hard to follow with sidebars and graphics interrupting the flow. There's also a fair amount of redundancy - some of the graphics make multiple appearances and Lovins tend to drive an idea home by repeating it over and over again. I found myself zoning out and having to repeat sections often.Overall it's an incredible book, I would recommend it to anyone interested in the future of energy.

If you are wanting to learn Java, this book is a perfect place to start. I personally had a little programming knowledge before taking a Java class, but as you may know Java is a bit different, because it uses objects.Because Java is an object oriented programming language, it can make it difficult to understand. Big Java takes things step by step, teaching you how to use each method correctly. If you are new to programming, and this is the first language you are learning, do not worry. This book is very detailed on how to get started, and also gives you hands on examples to try out for yourself. I would recommend doing each example, and every quiz the book gives, because with any programming language practice makes perfect. There are not to many things wrong with this book, but the little things that you may want to keep in mind when reading it are these:1. The book may not follow what you are learning in class (if you are taking an intro to Java class).2. The book also jumps into some simple graphic features pretty fast, but this will help you in the long run.3. Unlike an instructor, if you get stuck or are confused about something, the only help would be from someone that knows Java well.Even with the little cons the book is amazing. It helped me to better understand concepts that were covered in my Intro to Java Course. Sometime an instructor is rushed on time, so having a book like this can save you the trouble of guessing what to do. There are also to many concepts and words in Java to try and learn, it is impossible to memorize everything in the Java Library. But with Big Java, you can learn important concepts, and key words in a detailed enough way to help you remember them.I would recommend Big Java to anyone who is starting out, or to anyone who wants to learn Java. The book makes sure to challenge you, but in a way to learn the material. It also does not expect you to know what every term means, and give descriptions, and simple examples to better understand each term used. My rating for Big Java would be 4 and a half stars out of 5. My reasoning is, because with any book, it can not teach you as well as an instructor can. The book does do well by giving practice examples and some hands on, but nothing beats actually having someone talk you through the steps. The concepts and terms in Big Java are also described better then how some instructors describe them.Big Java is a great place to start. It will help you learn Java and all of the basics, and to prepare you for object oriented programming.

I'd recommend the Udacity 'Intro to Java Programming: Building Programs with Classes & Objects' to supplement this book. The online course has a free trial to boot!https://www.udacity.com/course/intro-to-java-programming--cs046The book itself can be overwhelming at times, and just overload a layman with sequences. For example, they use (...) often and many times I wish they'd just print out the enclosure. But I guess if it was easy, then everyone would be doing it! No wonder coders command the big bucks. Overall, learning CS has been a most fulfilling experience.

Great book for beginner programmers. Has code snippets and even projects you can try on your own! Everything is explained very well too.

Used for a semester of Programing concepts method 1 online and was useful. Wasn't necessary but added another tool to resort to when needed.

Coming from a C# background I found that this book really get rid of any C#isms I may have had. One thing about this book I especially enjoy is its readability, nothing seems too over the top. The examples are great too

Very well written, and easy to understand. This book goes great with the Udacity Computer Science class, which was developed by Horstmann. I got the looseleaf version and like it.

This a great book for learning Java! The digital copy makes it easy to study, helps with flash/note cards, and allows you to highlight!

Very good step by step method of using java! Also had good programming examples, and steps to do own programming.
