The plot continues in the second volume and the art style is amazing. However, there are several scenes in which character knowledge and motivation don't make sense. Alita still has magical plot skills from time to time but I assume that they aren't actually very magical in the context of later volumes. The romance between Alita and Hugo is believable enough considering the characters are teenagers, while vector comes across a typical con-artist. Overall I recommend this manga for several stand out scenes with several head scratches inbetween.

This picks up where vol. 1 left off. As is typical of manga that ran in a weekly, it really feels like one continuous story that a complete tale like you might get in a US TBP.

Just amazing. Truly artful with a relatable story.So far my favorite series this year. I can't wait for the movie!

Has been my favorite comic series since I first read it as an 11 year old in 1993. Have read these volumes numerous times but I’m rereading again before the live action movie comes out in theaters.If you’re a fan of sci-fi or good stories, I can’t recommend this series enough.

Can't recommend more to anybody who loves great characters great action and unique setting. An all time classic I doubt will ever fade.

I like sci-fi and the cyborg aspect of this book! I recommend this book to anyone who likes action, drama, and science fiction stories! I had NO IDEA that teachers' unions had this kind of control--over EVERYBODY in the education system! This was an easy ready, but an alarming one at the same time. I have a lot of kids and have been exposed to a TON of teachers. Most seem like the teachers I met in this book--totally dedicated to their craft, genuinely love their kids, spend tons of their own money on extra stuff for the classroom, want to see every child succeed past their own unique challenges, etc. With such dedicated teachers, I never understood why national reports always talk about schools failing our kids. We hear about it every year and it seems to be getting worse. Teachers never seemed to mention the workplace dynamics shared in the book--until I started asking some individually, if they were aware of this. Then, WHOA! Everyone's got a story--and they sound eerily familiar!Seems to me that the union clamp-down on teachers trying to improve student learning, engage parents effectively, build-up teacher morale, etc. is really crippling education. I can't believe the shennanigans they use to run good people and great teachers out of schools, parents off of school boards, and more. No school seems safe from their grip. How can we expect our kids to behave better when this is the leadership model in our schools? This is nonsense and has to stop.I see the big picture now...unions are trying to duct-tape the mouths of anyone who dares to speak out. They have a ton of money at stake here. In the book, I learned that where I live, teachers unions are the biggest financial political spenders--twice as much as big pharma!!! THAT'S HUGE! And, now I see how our elections are being shaped by their big $$ and political agenda and it makes me MAD! In Chapter 16, Friedrichs makes an audacious suggestion and I think it's brilliant! After reading the book, I've decided to buy a copy for all the teachers in my life and my kids' lives. Friedrichs is one courageous lady!If you want to see a revolution in education in this country, I think the message in this book could make one possible--as long as people are willing to actually stand against Goliath. I am. Are you?

First-time author Friedrichs absolutely hits it out of the park with her expose on state and national teachers unions. It's hard-hitting, well-written and completely engaginag. I appreciate Rebecca putting this information in such a readable format....more and more people are learning how unions are damaging our schools. All readers should be warned, however, not to read the book before bed because it's so infuriating! Seriously, the only thing I'm upset with this author about is my bouts of insomnia while reading her book! But change is coming, and Standing Up to Goliath is heating up the debate. So grateful!

5 stars is not enough! should be 10 stars! Rebecca tells it very forcefully! Teachers have suffered tremendously just to maintain the career that they love while the Unions steal tremendous amounts of $$ from them to buy legislation and corrupt this country in ways that are totally shocking! Free speech for the unions and not for teachers who are fighting to keep the children of this country from being abused. The unions don't care at all for the kids! its all about the $$ The Union leaders pocket the big bucks and your kids pay the altimate price

This book is a wonderful read. It contains dozens of real stories about how the state and national teacher's unions have created an atmosphere of fear and bullying among the union membership just to keep control of those millions of dollars in dues. Very sad state of affairs but the truth will set us free. These stories are written with a loving, yet direct, style that will make each reader stop and rethink how our public schools are being controlled and how we can change this negative culture.

What a great first snow day here in central Indiana to snuggle up and finish this outstanding read from Rebecca Friedrichs. Done in a narrative “Story Style”. Packed with testimonials of parents, teachers, and students that braved the Union bullies to fight for kids. Are we asking? “What About the kids”? Will we let fear keep us from realizing their dreams. Do you know a teacher that needs to be encouraged and educated at the Goliath destroying their dreams of teaching?

Your jaw will drop when you find out what's been going on in our public schools. ALL orchestrated by the teachers unions. Their grip on our kids' education has be exposed. Thankfully, she did just that. Friedrichs' stories - her own and from other teachers who bravely come forward in the book - are incredible.Also, it's in a very easy-to-read style. You'll breeze through it (she is a former teacher, so that makes sense!)

As a retired teacher who often questioned where my union dues went, I found Ms. Fridrichs book fascinating.

The reality of life is that there is not a single metering system in the world that can give you a correctly exposed image for a given subject every time. If you do not believe this, set your expensive Digital Camera to its most advanced exposure mode and take pictures of a black surface and a white surface. When you look at the resulting Digital Image, negative, or slide you will be disappointed. Cameras of today, very much like the cameras of fifty years ago, are incapable of recognizing and recording extreme tones such as a black and a white surface. What you are going to get from this crude experiment is a medium gray image tone. To add insult to injury, you will have absolutely no clue which one of these resulting images is for the original black or white subjects. As this experiment demonstrates, there is not a single metering system that, without your help and intervention, can capture what your eye sees and what your mind wants to capture. Of all metering systems available to the photographer, the Zone System of exposure with the help of your on-camera or off-camera spot meter is the only one can give a consistent and predictable reading to the photographer EVERY TIME! Once equipped with this knowledge, the photographer can use his or her skill to determine the correct exposure for a desired subject. The major difference between a skilled photographer and an unskilled one is that the latter never questions the camera's readings. The skilled photographer has the knowledge to interpret the spot meter's reading according to the subject tone, and to capture desired image or capture it as the eye sees or desires it. The Confused Photographer's Guide to Photographic Exposure and the Simplified Zone System is the first book ever published that deals with the new millennium's Digital Cameras (5-stop Zone System). Unlike other reflective metering systems (including average, center-weighted, and matrix, and others), in which the unskilled photographer is at the mercy of the camera's vision (?), with the applications of spot metering and the Zone System of interpretation, the skilled photographer is in control of the tones as well as the details in the final image. I was familiar with the Zone System, which is used to draw out more detail in a photograph. In fact, you can find a fantastic description of the process on Wikipedia.In a print system where you have a white paper that turns black when exposed to light, you expose for the dark parts and use dark room processes to get the light parts.In a digital system, things are reversed because you have a black starting point that turns white when exposed to light. As such, one exposes for the lighter elements and use digital software to post-process the darker areas.Things become a little confusing though when you are trying to remember what you're trying to do and you realize your meter isn't giving you the reading you want.Meters expose to 18% grey. Humans, for some reason, perceive this amount as 50%. That is, if you see black and you see white, what you'd call 50% grey in the middle would actually be reflecting only 18% of the light falling on it. Weird, I know. Anyhow...Anything you point your camera's meter at, it will try to adjust the tone as 18% grey. As such, you first have to learn to see the tone independent of color. This book teaches you how by showing numerous examples along side of extremes.Once you're pointing your camera's meter at the right place for the zone system to work, you then have to compensate for your meter not knowing you did that. Once again, the book gives plenty of examples, shows all combinations possible, and teaches you several ways to think about the problem so that you know whether you need to expose more or less and by how much.To top it off, not all camera models work the same way with notation. For instance, if your camera says +2, does that mean that you are adding two stops to what the meter is reading? Or, are you indicating that the meter is two stops more than what you want? The answer is that it depends based upon your camera, and that's covered too.Once you've got all the mechanics worked out, the book then covers the zone system and works into more advanced applications of it, and then touches on the artistic aspects.There's lots of big pictures on sparse pages to specifically reduce confusion and deliberately designed not to overwhelm the reader with details that aren't needed for that example. Conversely, during discussion moments, complete coverage of the topic is provided in a very approachable manner.Two thumbs up for the author of this book. I wish other authors would cover subject matters as clearly and coherently.

This book is not for you.But, if you really want to understand what is going on with your camera exposure-wise, REJOICE! This is the book.Warning: If you are one of those people who can't learn by analogies, just skip over those parts. I give you permission.Ok, so you might be impatient with his repetition. Well, if you are that impatient, you are not going to be much of a photographer.OK, so it does talk about film, and the models of digital cameras are dated. So what? The concepts are exactly the same and as applicable as ever.

This guy isn't just trying to sell books or prove how talented he is. You can tell that the author is a teacher and has lots of experience helping people learn about exposure.If you're a somewhat experienced photographer, you might find your eyes crossing for the first couple of chapters because of how boring and repetitious they are. The author doesn't want to leave anyone behind, so it's kind of a slow paced book. However, if you can make it through those chapters and read the whole book you will find yourself completely understanding photographic exposure. Let me say this:I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IF YOU USE A DIGITAL CAMERA. OTHER BOOKS LIKE "THE NEGATIVE" WHILE INFORMATIVE WILL JUST LEAVE YOU CONFUSED WHEN IT COMES TO SHOOTING DIGITAL.As far as I know this is the only book on photographic exposure that's very well suited for digital photography.Another thing that I really like about this book is that the author is a teacher and has a lot of experience teaching the subject matter to his students. He probably knows from teaching what people find confusing and how to best explain it to them. You'll be reading along and something may seem a little confusing. Well, before you have a chance to rack your brain about it, the author addresses it and puts it into laymen's terms. Sometimes he explains the same concept two or three different ways.One last comment on the book. I also appreciated the fact that he threw in lots of extra stuff that wasn't really necessary like different ways to figure out exposure under different circumstances without an exposure meter or a spot meter. He covers lighting, moonlight, and even fireworks. He even helped me understand why the Ansel Adams approach to the Zone System didn't really work with my digital camera. I've used my camera like ten times as much since reading this book.I noticed a couple of poor reviews right before I started writing this one. It seems that some people find it to be a little too simple. Remember, this is not an advanced book. The words "simplified" and "confused" in the title might have tipped you off! If you already understand the zone system, how to use your cameras spot meter, and how to use a light meter to get good exposures, then this book is definitely not for you. However, if you're afraid to put your camera on manual mode and aren't quite sure how to get a good exposure with your camera, then this is the book for you.

I have reviewed other books in the Alvin Ho series. We started backwards with the 6th book in the series (Allergic to the Great Wall) and ended up enjoying it so much that we purchased the rest of the series. What we enjoy is the author's offbeat sense of humor, the clever illustrations, and the warm and funny portrayal of a very idiosyncratic Chinese-American second-grader. As I've said in other reviews, our family appreciates the references woven throughout the Alvin Ho books to Chinese and Chinese-American culture. (Readers: Consult the glossary in the back of the book if you are unsure about a concept or word referenced in the book.) We are Asian-American and it is wonderful to have a book about an Asian-American kid that isn't obviously beating you over the head with, "Look here! This book is about MULTICULTURALISM and CHINESE-NESS!" The Alvin Ho books are much more subtle than that. Basically, the books are about a kid who happens to be Chinese-American - his culture is part of his life, of course, but it's not as though it is the be-all and end-all of his life...because, like any other kid growing up in the USA, he has other interests, hobbies, and concerns. Note also that one of Alvin's friends in the book is portrayed as having a physical disability -- and again, this is portrayed as something that makes her interesting and kind of cool, but it is not something that is harped on. Five stars.

These books would be good for boys and girls. My 2nd grade son and I read this entire series together. Every night we looked forward to learning what predicaments the well-meaning Alvin got himself into. Alvin is smart, sweet, creative, funny and tries to be a gentleman. Alvin is also shy, anxious, and unable to speak in public. My son says,"I like to read Alvin Ho. I think these are good books. I hope there will be more, like books #7, 8, 9 and 10! I think the next book should be 'Alvin Ho:Allergic to history, reading and other big stuff.'"

My son loves this series. He reads them happily and says the books are funny. I would highly recommend them. I am sure they would be a fun read-aloud series, too.

I cannot say enough things about how awesome Alvin Ho books are. They are SO funny, and both the kids and adults in my home love him.

Spray a rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the pancetta and cook, stirring frequently, until brown and crispy, 5 to 7 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the pancetta and drain on paper towels. Add the onion to the pan and cook until translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes. In a medium bowl, combine the onion, pancetta, cheeses, and peas. Season with salt and pepper. Using a paring knife, cut 1/2 inch from the stem end of each pepper. Remove the seeds and veins. Using a small dessert spoon, fill each pepper with the cheese mixture. Although I would switch out some of the Italian ingredients for ones that are more familiar, these recipes aren't so challenging that a person feels they can't do them. I especially loved the personal touch that Giada brings to the book. Her personal advice on most of the dishes are insightful and helpful. Really appreciate this one!

I've slowly become a fan of Giada and of her shows on the Food Network. When I heard a book was forthcoming based on her "Giada at Home" series, a show that I've used to draw many meals from, I immediately pre-ordered. First of all, I think she's evolved marvelously as a cook as this book demonstrates. While she does incorporate more of her California influenced cuisine, there are also plenty of classic Italian recipes which she clearly marks to distinguish one from the other. Several of the recipes have been used on multiple occasions in my household(Pea Pesto Crostini, Pasta Ponza, Caponata Panini) and one has become of my favorite go-to dishes (Spaghetti with Olives and Breadcrumbs). Also, while some ingredients aren't easy to find outside big cities, Italian food is very flexible - a point which Giada often makes on her show, pointing out acceptable substitutions to certain ingredients. This is a welcome addition to the Italian food loving home cook who likes good, unfussy food with plenty of taste.

I didn't really find much that excited me in this recipe book. I was hoping for Italian home cooking which this really isn't. If you are a Giada fan and want to see what she cooks at home, this would be a better fit for you than me.

I received this a Christmas gift. Since then, my hubby and I have cooked several of the recipes in here. They have all been fantastic. I'm always pleased with how healthy AND tasty Giada's recipes are, and this cookbook doesn't disappoint. The pictures in the cookbook are great - I always like to see what the dish will look like in the end. This book is packed with excellent recipes that are full of flavor, fairly easy to cook and almost always healthy. The only downside to this cookbook is that some of the dishes call for a large number of recipes, which is always daunting for people that don't cook as often. Also, she tends to call for some ingredients that are more expensive or harder to find - but only in a few recipes. Overall, this is a great cookbook!

I just received this book a few weeks ago and love it! The pictures inside are very colorful, the pages are all glossy and thick, and the recipes are simple. If you've watched season one and two of Giada at Home, alot of the recipes from those two shows are in this book. If you're a person who has to watch someone cook the recipe instead of reading the recipes, you should get her DVD set, season one and two. They are worth the purchase and the recipes are exactly the same as what's inside this book.

She is one of my favorite chefs. I didn't like this book as much as her others, but there's always good stuff in there. And she makes it simple, with ingredients I can find. Here in my area there are no fishmongers nor spice shops, so I'm glad to see cookbooks like hers.

He send me advanced copy of this book, but because of my traveling to Europe I put my review very late. As all his previous books this book is very interesting too. Why not? The book based on dialogues of real people. It is always interesting. Do you like to go to “dry” lecture or “very live” discussions? I like real exchange of opinions. This book made it. My suggestion is – to give copy of this book to all new people in mosque.“Many think differently, feel differently, seeking God or meeting God in different ways. In this crowd, in this range of religions, there is only one certainty that we have for all: we are all children of God,” Pope Francis said in his message, released Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany.“There is no god but God” - the beginning of the shahada, the Muslim profession of faith (just the first part). This is Theology, and Ahmed is trying to explain all difficult issues. After September 11, 2001 we are started to use new term "clash of civilizations," by Samuel Huntington. Do we really see clash of civilizations, or this is new brainwashing tool to use for dividing world between different groups. Reverend Franklin Graham — son of Billy Graham and former spiritual adviser to the American president, George W. Bush, publicly called Islam "an evil and wicked religion." All of the books written for boys worked out great! I have a son that is Special needs had no interest in learning the facts. He has a true Christian Heart that goes beyond anything I could have taught. It has always been like he knew it already. This was a way to explain without going against how he felt. It has everything you want, need, and a little you may not want to know but it is out there. All areas are covered without losing God in the process. If are just a believer in God or not a believer this still covers all the facts at each appropriate ages. I think the one for 15 plus is okay for your 13 year old to cover also. Really good set for teaching! ! I highly, highly recommend!

This series is very well written. Medically correct, tastefully illustrated. Does a good job guiding the level of detail with the age brackets all while framing human sexuality in a Christian perspective (the main reason I purchase this series). I highly recommend using this series as a tool to having ongoing discussions about (hetero-)sexuality with your children. If you can't have mature discussions about sexuality you certainly are ready to be having sex.

I bought the entire set for my son but, since he's only 6 yrs. old, we haven't read this book yet. I was thankful to find a series on this subject that gave the information I was comfortable with providing for my son at the right age. My husband has been reading the beginning books with our son and they both enjoy the time together sharing this important information at an age appropriate level.

Muslim, Jewish and Christian parents will value the words used to discuss sexuality issues with their children. A must for parents to read early in the lives of their children to prepare them to best open up the topic at age childs classmates are talking about sexual matters.

I highly recommend these books as a resource to help discussing Love, Sex, and God with your teens.

This book is really well written and brings God in nicely without being too preachy. But, when it comes to matters of opinion, it just went too far for me. The book advises no sex until marriage and no masturbation. Generally, it gave good practical advice but it just went a little too far for me. Oh, and, no terrible surprise, but it was anti-gay which I was bothered by.

Great tool to use for talking about sex from a Christian perspective.

This is one of the best historical narratives I've ever read. The author masterfully discusses centuries of English history by focusing on some of the most influential women to come to power, and discusses where their strengths, weaknesses, failures and triumphs, culminating in the monarchy of Queen Elizabeth I. I learned a great deal about English history from this book, and was introduced to some fascinating characters and battles that I have heard about but not fully understood their significance. Finally, this book was fascinating in how it details the ways women held power in a man's world. History lovers will have a great time reading this book.

I bought this book to replace the one I loaned a friend, she liked it so much I am buying this for me. This is my Fourth copy because I keep loaning it and people forget to return it to me. It’s very well written! I love the Author, Helen Castor. She has the ability to immerse you into the book.

There are already many excellent reviews on this site regarding this splendid offering from Helen Castor who presents succinct yet sufficiently detailed synopses of the lives of four remarkable queens of England. Her starting point is the death of Henry VIII's son Edward, leaving the country to face the prospect for the first time of being ruled by a woman, Henry's surviving daughter Mary I. Castor then circles back to the stories of much earlier royal women who almost achieved sovereignty but were thwarted by the overriding belief that "the weaker sex" was not capable of ruling independently of a man who would legitimize her power and control of the country. Having just finished rereading Penman's books about Matilda (Maude), her son Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, I wanted to remain immersed in this fascinating period of English history and read about these women from a different point of view. Castor is very clear about why the women she discusses were deemed to be "she wolves," yet she never becomes strident in her criticism of a world so incapable of recognizing the worth of these women who strove for power, yet ultimately failed. Very easy reading and quite accurate and informative. Highly recommended for lovers of medieval history.

The author does a fantastic job of putting a human face on history. Her analysis us thoughtful and her impeccable organization keeps you from getting lost despite flying through the space, time, and convuluted family trees. Couldn't put it down.

If you're looking for pop-history, this probably won't suit you. This book is real history. It's a look at several women who either ruled or sought to rule England in the years before Queen Elizabeth I. It's mostly sympathetic to these royal women, though not uncritical.There's a lot of detail, a lot of names, a lot of history covered.If you have an interest in the English monarchy and the wars and internecine workings that formed it, this is an excellent book.

A relatively weak start ends in fine fashion and the author's style and research come to the fore. While the early chapter on Matilda suffers for a lack of primary material and some weak assumptions the other chapters each get stronger and even having read other authors on these reigns I found plenty of new stuff to keep me interested. At the end you can't help feeling that its circumstances that have the greatest influence on the success, or not, of the she wolves.

I really enjoyed this. It seemed pretty well-grounded historically (I did not spot any glaring errors, and I've done a bit of reading on the subject) - as a previous reviewer notes, it would have been nice if the sources had been a little better presented. It's more of a "further reading" list rather than a guide to specific statements. The author's voice is a good one, and personalizes the characters. I also appreciated linking the earlier queens to Mary and Elizabeth (and poor Jane Grey) and the compare-and-contrast. It's a long read but worth it.

I had eagerly awaited the release of this book and waited until I could take my time and read it slowly- taking notes if I wished. I wasn't disappointed! The book begins with a genealogy of the Tudor Succession and as Edward VI is dying. The book is an utterly fascinating, eminently readable, treatise about the tradition of female rulers prior to the time of Elizabeth I.Included are:Matilda: Lady of England 1102-1167Eleanor: An Incomparable Woman 1124-1204 (long lived indeed!)Isabella: Iron Lady 1295-1358Margaret: A Great and Strong Laboured Woman 1430-1482and, as the books returns to the time of the Tudors and the death of Edward VI, in "New Beginnings"Mary and her disastrous marriage with Philip of Spain. The book ends as Elizabeth I is handed the reins of of government and becomes both the King and Queen of her kingdom.Each section is preceded by a both a genealogy as well as a map of the Kingdom as it existed at that point in history. Very helpful while you are reading about the constantly changing boundaries of the various countries. The genealogies really made me realize how small the pool of available spouses for royal marriages really was at the time. Papal dispensations for consanguinity matters must have been a steady source of revenue for the Church! Ms. Castor has an uncanny ability to write non-fiction that reads as enjoyably as fiction. I was sorry when the book ended - wanting more of this truly riveting history. The struggle of female rulers really was the the beginning of the fight for women's rights and the fact that these amazing, talented, strong women managed to rule as they did is a wonder. I wonder how many modern women would have the tenacity and determination to breach the boundaries of proper 'etiquette' as these female rulers did. It boggles my mind at how strong and focused they must have been. No doubt they would be the sort of successful women who would, to this day, be called She Wolves, baracuddas, or another word that begins with the letter b----.I wished that the book had more illustrations - but then I always wish that. I always want more images to pair with the words in a book. The included 8 pages of color images are well done - but more would have been better (of course!) This book will, I think, hold wide appeal to history buffs - especially those who are Anglophiles as I am, as well as for people who study women's rights and societal issues.I will be on the pre-order list as soon as I hear about Helen Castor's next book !
