My daughter is the hugest fan of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, so we got a couple more in the series. It's just not the same without the singsongy rhyming. This book has a more traditional storytelling, and isn't rhythmic like the original (I assume the bed one is the original), so it isn't as beloved, nor as fun to read out loud. It's a cute little book, though.

Another great story. "Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car" is still the best one, but I'd say this is a tie for second with "...Jumping on the Bed." The alliteration and rhyming words delight a two-year-old.

I got two of these books which are really good ('jumping on the bed', and 'reading in bed'). Which is why I thought I'd purchase more from this author. But this one is terrible! just awful! It just feels thrown together with very little thought. Trust me...skip this one.

my daughter loves these book bought the whole series. We've read them so many times she knows them by heart. It's a great way to get the kids into reading.

My 2 year daughter loves these books. We read them every night. We own a few from this series and she enjoys them all. Great illustration and perfect for bedtime (short and sweet )

Doesn’t have a good flow. Not much thought put into this book. My daughter has almost every Five Little Monkey book. This is her favorite series. She does not ask for us to read this one non stop.

This was a really great book that covered an interesting bit of history, which is why it should be 3.5 and maybe pushing 3.9 on the star rating system. There are a few downers, first is the huge cast of people the author introduces, which you lose track of who is who after the author spent some chapters development on their background. While a couple of folks mentioned in the opening, some famous aviators and astronauts get passing mentions later in the book. Then the biggest fault is the lack of maps. The mention of towns, airfields and operating areas were prolific in the book; but without good maps you could be anywhere when the stories of pilot rescue or survival were mentioned. No frame of reference as to how dangerous an aircraft that has seconds to stay aloft is when the description of a town could place you over Trenton on the way to Philadelphia or deep over the mountains and the nearest civilization is a week hike south. So the lack of maps really frustrated me in reading this book. Finally, what kept it from being a four star was the typos. From names being misspelled in one paragraph and spelt right the next down to some designation of aircraft or units that were done right and wrong multiple times on the same page.That said this is a good book that tries to humanize the air war over Korea from the men who flew off the USN carriers. Most of them were reservists who either just missed being in WW2 or had served and when the post WW2 drawdown occurred wanted to keep flying but couldn't on active duty. If you are a history buff and have read anything of Naval Aviation after WW2 then some of these stories you have heard. From the Jesse L. Brown story and his wingman Tom Hudner who crash lands in the same mountains to save the first black aviator, to the use of torpedoes against a dam that the Chinese controlled, to the attempts to bomb the rail and roads and starve the Communist armies. Intermixed in these stories is the arrival of Michener an author of note who was working as a newspaper correspondent and spent almost a year on the Navy carriers getting stories. Some of which would form the bones of the novel Michener would later write. Also, mixed in this was the history of the Korean War. It's a good book if only to make more readable and accessible some of the stories that history buffs and drier history tomes have told of the U.S. Na y and it's Naval Aviators over the skies of Korea. This book ready humanized those folks stuck with both jets and props as the planes they would fly in those skies.

This is an excellent and well researched short history of the carrier war in Korea, targeted mainly, as is most Korean War history, at the first brutal, terribly desperate year of the war. It tells the stories of a group of very brave men pulled from their peacetime lives to fly mostly obsolete WWII aircraft pulled from mothballs off WWII aircraft carriers into one of the harshest environments they had ever experienced. My dad was there on the Carrier USS Leyte in the fall and winter of 1950 (I was in the first grade and didn't understand it at all) and I've always been interested in the war stories he would never tell. He took the loss of each of those pilots personally. You'll find buried here the real story of the "Bridges at Toko-Ri", a Michener tale that, as with most of Michener's work, wasn't far from the tragic truth. It's a great book and I give it 5 stars. It has a prominent place in my military history collection.

A half century later this book makes a number of important points about the Korean War. First, of course, is the main theme of the book to provide some insight into the skill and courage of naval aviators in just getting on and off air craft carriers. But the bonus points, as I see it, are descriptions of enemy anti-aircraft attacks, the difficulty in hitting railroad and tunnel targets, the experiences of POW's, the helicopter rescue missions and the two year drag-out of the so called Peace Talks. The only two criticisms I have is what was probably the editor's break off in the middle of a description of one of the many unfolding dramas; and the unnecessary references to numbers and letters of certain aircraft. Finally, it was interesting to read about James Michener whom the author obviously greatly admired...

I found "Men Such as These" to be very well-written. However, as a member of fighter squadron VF-72, an F9F Panther jet squadron in CVG-7 aboard the BON HOMME RICHARD CV-31, Task Force 77, I was disappointed that there was no mention at all of our 7 month tour off Korea operating out of Yokosuka, Japan. Our ship and the CVG-7 squadrons played a significant role in naval operations during the war.BON HOMME RICHARD departed San Diego on 10 May for the Far East. She joined TF-77 off Korea on 29 May and launched her first air strikes 31 May. BON HOMME RICHARD continued operations with TF 77 until 20 November 1951. The carrier reached San Diego in mid-December 1951 and on 20 May 1952 was off again to the Far East.She joined TF 77 once more on 23 June 1952 and took part in the heavy strikes against the North Korean power complex (24-25 June) and the amphibious feint at Kojo (12-16 October). She continued operations against North Korean targets until 18 December 1952 and then steamed to San Francisco where she arrived 8 January 1953. Her classification was changed from CV 31 to CVA 31, 1 October 1952.Despite this omission, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of naval aviation in Korea.

For me, it's a five. Narration was interesting, informative. Excellent pictures and illustrations. Up to date on what was then and now.

Fully half of this book is focused on drawing human figures, leaving very little room for information on actual fashion illustration. That was frustrating to me. Additionally, my book has a completely different cover than the one shown on this page. Not really a problem, but it threw me off when trying to figure out which parts of my order had arrived and which hadn't.

Great book. Very informative.

I bought this book initially for kindle. I realized I wanted the hard copy for my illustration library as well so I purchased the hard copy. The information on rendering different texture of fabric is priceless. I love how the author explains the process and mediums used. This book can be used by anyone who wishes to improve their fashion drawing with realistic rendering of fabrics' textures. I would recommend this book to anyone who draws fashion, fashion illustration students, designers and illustration instructors.

I was expecting some new insight from this book, but didn't get any. The drawings make for a catchy title, but I don't think they add much beyond what the text offers.For a math book, I am not looking for Proof by Simile. Saying that a function smooths out like the German Autobahn strikes me as distinctly nonmathmatical.I am not sure who the target audience is, but it seems too dense for younger children, and not rigorous enough for people interested in math and science. Perhaps best for people who never took college level math classes but are looking for something sciencey...

I am familiar with the author's blog and ordered this book thinking a math teacher friend would enjoy the humorous illustrations. I was surprised to see a lot more in the way of math explanation than I had expected. My kids were intrigued by an "Oral History of the Death Star" and why ants have no fear of falling. So we ended up buying one a copy for our family too.The second half of the book is heavy on probability/statistics/reasoning and makes the ideas very accessible.

This is a great book! You will love this book! It's the best book I've read all year, and I don't say this just because the author is my son. You should buy it for yourself and give this book as a gift to anyone you know who loves math, or likes math, or at least isn't phobic about math. You should definitely give this book as a gift to each your children, assuming that your child is at least 12 years old and isn't the author. By the way, the author refers to "bad drawings." I find the drawings cute and endearing. And they are WAY better than anything I can draw.

I love this book. Orlin leads a playful romp through a universe of mathematical ideas, with interesting stories, anecdotes, and examples. The book is at once profound but also highly accessible. Math-lovers will find a lot of to appreciate about this book, but so will young people, teachers, engineers and scientists, and the math-curious layperson. It's laugh-out-loud funny in nearly every chapter, but your giggles and chortles will be interspersed with fascinated "hmmm..." and surprised "Ahhh!"s. The "bad drawings" are a highlight, but the clever writing is the real star. I can't wait for volume 2! There will be a volume 2, right Mr. Orlin??

I pre-ordered the book and was so excited when it arrived! I'm on Chapter 4 and can't put it down. Ben's writing style and explanations are engaging, truthful, insightful, and easy to understand. As a math teacher (and a lifelong math student), I especially identified with the chapter on how students see math. I plan to share many of the topics in the book with my high school math students. My wheels are spinning to create activities or discussion topics to weave into my classes from things that I've read so far in this book. Can't wait to see what the rest of the book brings!

I was inspired to buy this book by a blog that I read, and I'm glad that I did. The drawings, which are indeed bad, serve to humanize the subject. A wide range of topics is covered, from baseball and football statistics to state lotteries. A very enjoyable read, at least for this math-literate person.

Orlin has a knack for rendering abstruse mathematics into readable simple language, with wit and humor. The bad drawings are actually clever and illuminative. For anyone interested in what math is like fo4 mathematicians, this book is awesome.

The is the most fun you could ever have reading a math book. Ben Orlin's writing makes all the topics come alive. He's got a great sense of humor. I have laughed out loud multiple times while reading this book. Highly recommend to any people who are interested in enjoying some leisure math without lots of heavy lifting.
