The techniques in this sweet, charming book have actually worked for me. Small enough to read in a single sitting, this book urges us to call us upon the angelic guides and beings that guide us. Jean Slatter's concepts are easy to visualize and put into practice. The hardest part is remembering to make this technique a part of our daily life. As Jean states, we don't have to reserve our requests for only our largest projects, goals, health concerns, etc. We can use this guidance on a daily basis. I enjoyed this book so much that I bought a 4 or 5 more to share with friends and family.

I loved this book from the very first page. After just finishing, I wish it was longer because it was so inspiring! I look forward to the fun and excitement ahead as I follow her easy and playful advice 😇Even before finishing the book I started practicing what I had learned and my and husband and I experienced some Divine assistance. We had gone to the local Wal-Mart in the pouring rain to get our weekly groceries. The lot was packed and I knew parking would be difficult and there would be a long walk in the rain from the car to the store and then back. I asked my husband to drop me off at the store and I could begin shopping as he parked the car. Before I hopped out I asked (out loud) for an angelic parking attendant to help him. A few minutes later my husband found me in the store with a happy story to tell. He said as soon as I got out of the car a man with a bag of groceries came up and asked if he was looking for a parking space. The man said he was only 5 spots away from the store and to wait right there! As my husband waited the car in the next spot closer backed out and my husband pulled right in only 4 spots from the door! Wow! Now that was service! And to top it all off the torrential rain stopped as we left the store, loaded the groceries, made the quick trip home and unloaded our groceries. Then the rain started again. We got more than we asked for! 😇

Miracles & Magic!! I love Jean Slatter's book "Hiring the Heavens". I have so much fun creating my Angel committees. I downloaded Jean's workbook on her web site . It is a great tool to organize your committees. I call it Miracles & Magic because of how fast some of the tasks that I ask my committee's begin to happen. There are no limits to how many committees you can create. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Review

“With remarkable insight, James Bach describes the tools, skills and mindset necessary to create your own education. If the millions of students currently sitting in class took Bach’s simple advice and began creating products, projects, and organizations in the real world, unemployment could be solved practically overnight.” --Dale J. Stephens, Founder of UnCollege.com“Bach’s book is a wake-up call. I recommend it to just about anyone who wants to hear a different take on learning from what they’ve heard from parents and teachers.” --Earnthis.net“James Bach has demonstrated that there are opportunities for each one of us to expand the innate capacity of our mind to learn and be creative without surrendering to the dictates of an academic establishment.” --Theradicalhumanist.com

if you are one of the folks that continually lives in a state of learned helplessness and complain about problems instead of fixing them, or are a baby-bird that needs hand-holding and require food to be continually spit up in your mouth by momma bird because you claim you 'cannot' do things on your own when you really can, then this book is not for you. However, if you are a critical thinker, care about learning, improving your condition, etc then this is the book for you. You are in charge if your own learning, not your parents or your manager. James does talk a little out both sides of his mouth stating that you don't need school to learn, but then saying school might be appropriate for some people's learning styles. I could spend an hour on a review with this, but to get perspective on this book you should follow James on Twitter (@jamesmarcusbach) as well as attend testing conferences and engage in the CDT (Context-Driven Testing) community to get a better grasp on how to apply this. This book is a mindset change for anyone, not just testers. If you are a tester, I'd recommend also reading "Lessons Learned In Software Testing" by James Bach, after this.

I'm frequently told I need to read particular books as they are great, excellent, or whatever. Because I have a horrible backlog of reading material, sometimes I finally get around to getting the particular title. If I go that far, usually I'm predisposed to like the book. On a few rare occasions, it goes beyond like... more into the realm of "I'm not going to be the same after this".Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar: Self-Education and the Pursuit of Passion by James Marcus Bach is one of those rare books. It took me a year before I got around to getting a copy via inter-library loan. It took me all of two days before I ordered my own copy from Amazon so that I'd forever have it in my possession. I'm even going to use my embosser to make sure I don't lose this copy, and that it gets back to me if anyone borrows it. There are so many things that are right about this view into learning by someone who didn't fit the normal cookie-cutter approach to education that we all experience in our typical scholastic career.Contents:Dangerous Ideas - Schoolteachers don't like me very much; I Am a Buccaneer-Scholar - What's that and so what?; The First Buccaneers - A free people, skilled in many arts; What I Do and How I Do It - Eleven elements of self-education; Mental Mutiny - I tried to think - but nothing happened; The Silence of the Clams - The value of low-pressure learning; Happy Learning, James! - Discovering my passion, overcoming my fear; Emancipated Minor - I quit school and lived; Guaranteed Not Stupid - How do I know I'm any good?; No Prey, No Pay - Buccaneering at work; Treasure Map - The power of a personal syllabus; Dr. Bach - Buccaneering in the long run; Epilogue; At The Helm; AcknowledgmentsBach details his story of how he dropped out of school at 16, unable to make sense of what, how, and why his teachers were asking him to learn things. But instead of ending up at a minimum wage job as a "failure", he figured out how to educate himself. This led to a job at Apple leading a large team of software testers... at the age of 20. He's now recognized industry-wide as an expert on software testing (and a number of other things), all done with the backing and accreditation of nothing more than an eighth grade graduation certificate. :)The term buccaneer-scholar denotes an attitude to learning that comes from not being restricted or funnelled into a standardized "one size fits all" approach to education. It's the ability to wander, explore, and learn about the things that appeal to you, and to find where one fits into the world based on your own needs and interests. It's not a condemnation of formal education or schooling. Instead, it's a recognition that not everyone learns in the same way, and the *ability* to learn on your own is more important than sitting in a classroom and being taught. As he relates in the opening pages, many teachers and educators find his message disturbing, incorrect, and dangerous. On the other hand, he's proof that learning to learn is just as important (and actually even more so) than just learning something. The number of things that resonated with me in this book would turn this into a huge review. Suffice it to say, there weren't many chapters where I came away with nothing. In general, my biggest take-away was the realization and recognition of a number of factors that are holding me back from advancing to the level I want to attain in my current career path. Even better, I came away with the tools, inspiration, and motivation I need to break my current patterns and get on track with where I need to go. I think I knew a number of his principles (and my hurdles) before I read the book, but this made them solid and obvious... something I could act on instead of feeling burdened over.Every year I try to look back and figure out what book(s) meant the most to me or affected me on a deep level. There's no question that Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar will be at the top of the list for 2013, and it may well be the most important book (on a personal level) I've read in the last five to ten years. This isn't just information that will improve some aspect or segment of your life. It's information that will fundamentally change your life, period.Disclosure:Obtained From: LibraryPayment: Borrowed

I would actually rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. It's an inspiring and, to a degree, informative book on learning outside of the classroom. The author makes the case through his own experience that you don't necessarily need to go to school or follow the traditional academic path in order to be educated. Since learning styles differ among people, there are those that are not suited to classroom learning and has nothing to do with intelligence. This book is for that type of learner and provides encouragement and techniques for not only learning for a specific purpose, but also for the joy and personal enrichment. Yet, even those of us who are university educated can learn a lot from this book, mainly to appreciate self-directed learning and to expand knowledge from a single course of study. If there is a downside to the book, it's the author's use of the Buccaneer analogies to independent learning. I found it got a little old after a while, but it did not take away from the content. Also, the author introduces his "SACRED SCOWS" approach to learning, but I felt that he didn't go into enough depth at times to illustrate how it helped him to learn a particular topic. However, the author states that this method works for him and that each person should develop a method that works for them.Overall, I highly recommend this book. Particularly for a young person in high school or college age who is frustrated with school as this book provides the inspiration, motivation and some techniques to find their own path.

If you do not know what to say to an elderly person or feel you constantly get into arguments or get frustrated or irritated. This is the book to read. It explains the communication gap so wonderfully it is absolutely amazing. Once you start reading you cannot stop. I work with seniors and this book came highly recommended when I attended a required training for maintaining my certification. It is everything needed for good and clear communication with seniors. Highly recommend it. Awesome!!!

Effective communcation enriches any relationship. I must say this book has been the best 'tool' for helping me to 'listen well' to the older generation and has taught me to be selective in my approach to communicating. As a caregiver to my mother, 92 years old, I was relentless in assisting with her quality of life. This book helped me to understand the 'core' concerns of our aging population. It was a blessing not only to me but to my entire family. Seniors are valuable and want to know their lives made a difference and that they leave a meaningful legacy. I urge others to read "How to Say it to Seniors" if you want to experience the richness the older generation has to offer. I am now 61 years 'young' and I have learned so much. Things my mother 'said' vs. what she actually 'meant' were often different. She transitioned in March 2014 with confidence that she was indeed "understood."

First I heard a snippet of David Solie speaking at a conference and ran to order his book. I've ordered it over and over again because when I lend it out, it never comes back! His advice is so simple and helpful and he puts it in a context with great examples, that makes it easy to follow. Right after I read it the first time, I had an adult child call me, frustrated with his mom. We put it into context with the David Solie advice/approach and within days, the son called me back. He said, "I have tears in my eyes. Your advice was spot-on. Mom is now cooperating with me!" Thanks to David, we were able to solve a family challenge with the best results possible and her son was singing our praises in warding off a difficult situation. This book and this author have helped me coach salespeople in senior living to listen carefully, respond accordingly and most of all, coach the adult children to help save their family dynamics!

I got this book for my brothers, sister and myself to see if it could help us cope with our mom who requires a lot more of our help now due to a stroke. Although this book doesn't deal with the aftermath of a medical crisis, it does outline why seniors act the way they do and how to most effectively deal with them. This book gave me a whole new insight to what my mom is going through now that she is at the end phase of her life. I have a new respect/appreciation for her and the path she is on. I also understand how important it is for us, her children, to allow her to control her destiny as much as possible. I strongly encourage anyone dealing with a "difficult" elderly parent to read this book. It will open your eyes to their side of things, and hopefully help bridge the gap between what they want and what we think is "best for them".

I wish my parent's doctors would read this book! Everyone who deals with those over 70 should read it. We teach early childhood education, but why is there no education in how to deal with those in the last part of their lives, so they feel respected. This guy is great.

In preparing for a visit with my elderly parents I rather glibly mentioned to my brother that what we needed was a book like I had when I was pregnant only this one would be called "What to Expect When You're Expecting Your Parents to Get Old." And then I realized there were probably hundreds of such books. There are and a quick search on Amazon came up with loads of suggestions. Thankfully "How to Say It to Seniors" was close to the top of the list and caught my eye - it was exactly what I needed. This is a simple, easy to understand and blessedly short book with straightforward and practical strategies for helping the elderly in our lives. It gave great insight into the challenges and losses they deal with daily and gave me a better understanding of why they sometimes respond they way they do. It also gave me techniques towards better communication. We accomplished a lot during my short visit without them feeling pushed or me feeling frustrated.I can't say it's a well written book - it's repetitive and a bit clunky - but the information it imparts is invaluable. It has completely changed my approach to my parents and I feel much more prepared to help them in ways they really need.

Another book that was used for my Elder's Class. My professor is a life coach for working with seniors. David Solie writes how being patience is so important when dealing with the elder. He mention in his writing of how many sales have been loss in financial planning, because the person did not understand many seniors, and was not patience. Many try to close the deal without giving the seniors time to think things through. This is a very good book.

I have not finished reading this book yet, but what i have read deserves a 5-star rating. I have learned some much about how to speak and deal with the older people in my life. I think the thing I hate the worse is how we ( me included) talk and deal with our parents and other elderly people. Just because we dont take a little time and just listen to find out their needs . Just to let you know they are still people that have feeling and needs, after all they are not dead yet and remember our time is fast approaching! I highly recommend this book to any and everyone !!! We are truly missing the mark and an important need in our own life. I appreciate the author sharing his knowledge in this awesome book! This author does understand this age group and how to talk and deal with their needs. I look forward to using some of his suggestions with my mother and others in that age group. A must read book !!!I
