I have wanted to find a nice version of Ramayana epic for my daughter for some time;the story is timeless and it belongs to the world. In some ways though, the good news andthe bad news is the same when it comes to rendering this very detailed and involvedstory in an ultra-condensed manner. For while its compact enough to hold a young person'sinterest (for how many readings I do not yet know), and while it definitely hits many of themajor plot points of the story in doing so, it is handicapped by its own brevity. There is nosense of development and no time to get to know the characters. Its more like they are alljust 'mentioned.' The importance of Dharma is there, and I appreciate that, but the truth ofRama's identity and the sense of awe that a more detailed version can convey, is missing.In saying this, I should also say that I can understand how hard it would be to do all that ina short book like this. My daughter seems to like it though, and it is written for children, sothe mission may have been accomplished to at least some degree.
