should have checked the # of pages -- this is just a little pamphlet -- some nice nuggets of info, but not worth the price tag

While this book is fairly short (40 pages) it appears to contain all the known facts about the ancient city/shrine of Eridu. This is probably because the ruins of the city have not yet yielded any inscribed clay tablets. Therefore, most of what we know about Eridu's history comes from sometimes fragmentary accounts found in other, later-established Mesopotamian cities. Nevertheless the author(s) of this book have put together a very readable, if partly speculative, account of the likely history and sociology of this first temple/city of the Ubaid/Uruk/Sumerian culture. Perhaps the only significant omission is any discussion of slavery. After all, someone had to haul all that water from the irrigation canal up to the pleasant gardens of delights.I would also have liked to see more discussion of the known relative dating of the ziggurat ruins, perhaps using the pottery methods. In particular, a comparison of the dates and sizes of the ziggurats at Uridu and Babylon (which is the one referenced in the Biblical Genesis) would have been of interest.

Eridu marks a transition phase when humans effectively may have used competitive advantage to gain command and control over their fellow men. This radical change transformed the Ubaid Civilization into the social framework we know as Sumer Civilization. The text discloses sufficient of the Mesopotamian story for a reader to deduce that the leadership style of a primordial Sumerian King bears resemblance to modern tyrants that misused deception and perception management during crises to bring into play their rhetorical and propaganda skills presenting the “Self” as one requiring inhumane obedience from the labor force. While the book doesn’t explore this thesis, facts are laid out logically for anyone to decide for themselves.

Eridu: Is well written and easy to understand. Although Ur was thought to be the oldest city in Mesopotamia. Eridu now seems to be the oldest. The home city of the ( God King ) Enil . The unveiling of Eridu cast a new light on the history of early civilization in the Middle East. This is a short book filled with tons of information. It's a good read. Buy it, you will like it...D

This is a good book. Gives a detailed information about the First City. From what they discovered or from ancient tales. There is only so much information. This is a good place to start learning.

Fascinating. Among the series this has been one of my favorites. The story of this mythic city is astonishing o.o

The history of Erich is a fascinating story of very early civilization developing in the desert sands between the Tigers and Euphrates rivers. The Charles River Editors have done an outstanding job of bringing this pile of stones to life.

a lot of research done. Very informative
