Benebell Wen is a practitioner of various metaphysical arts. She studies tarot, feng shui, the I Ching, numerology, and both Chinese and Hellenisic astrology. Wen is the author of Holistic Tarot: An Integrative Approach to Using Tarot for Personal Growth (North Atlantic Books, 2015). When not lecturing, teaching, or writing on metaphysics, Wen practices law in California and New York. She is of Taiwanese descent and currently lives in Northern California with her husband, James, and their beloved cat.

This book is AMAZING!!!! My eyes were opened wide just into the first dozen pages. She provides a detailed account of history behind talsiman crafting in the taoist tradition. Whether you're a newcomer to the craft or a seasoned pro, this book will provide you with tons of GOLD that you can use to increase the effectiveness of your own craft.
I read and loved the author's first book, Holistic Tarot, and hoped this one would be as wonderfully "readable, thoughtful, and eminently practical." I wasn't disappointed! Wen takes us this time into an introduction and understanding of magical Chinese culture associated with Fu talismans.Smart and thorough, I particularly enjoyed the information in the Appendices: Considerations for the House; Beginner Sigil Design Tutorial; and Glyph Design References.
There has never been a book in English with such a wealth of highly specialized, recondite material. I've been searching for a book like this for years. I was mostly interested in the artistic construction of Chinese "Fu" which is covered in great depth here, but the author/practitioner Benebell Wen, provides so much more, including the history, purpose, actual models for construction, many examples of "Fu", different Chinese fonts including an introduction to the mysterious,obscure "cloud script" used in Chinese talisman writing. Add to that, many chapters to numerous to list, almost 600 pages! For anyone even remotely interested in this mysterious art/craft, or ancient Chinese history, Chinese cosmology, Chinese sigils, etc. , this is a must read. Web references with downloadable material also online. Incredible valuable resource.
Benebell Wen's book is one I would reccomend to others for a few reasons. First, I have not seen another book like this anywhere. If you're interested in finding out more about the practical application of taoist esoteric techniques, this book is a good place to start. Wen's approach is a little bit different than what you'll find in most occult how to books. The author seems to go to great lengths to give her readers a firm grounding in the historical/cultural context in which taoist esoteric practices developed. Finally, what I really admire about Wen is the fact that she encourages her readers to not only learn these practices but attempt to graft them onto and make them a part of your own cultural milieu. So, for example, if you're a pagan or a practitioner of wicca, she asks you to see how you can incorporate the practices she teaches into your own lineage. This book is definitely worth the time and effort required to study and learn the practices contained therein.

This has all the information my own mother refused to teach me and I feel more connected to my culture working through this book. I will keep this book forever. It is not a book filled with fluffy filler text about spirituality and becoming one with [insert ambiguous term here]. This is tangible, real, concise, and sensical in every way. At this point, Benebell Wen is my spirit animal.
I love Benebell Wen’s work. This book is amazing. From the basics of Tao to fu sigils, she walks you step by step to understand not just the beauty of the Tao magic craft, but the history, the harmony, and the depth behind it. It’s a course in Chinese bone script, mythology, Taoist magical tradition and honestly, it’s becoming a treasured reference book. To me, it’s given me a foundation to a piece of knowledge I’ve looked at before but wasn’t ready to understand. Now, now I’m seeing things in a bigger context. I’m also realising that my love for mythology, for traditional craft magic has truly found a place to grow. If you want to deepen your respect for Eastern magical practices, to deepen your own skills, to stretch yourself further, the Tao of Craft is for you
In this book, Benebell shares an Eastern esoteric tradition of charging and casting sigils. It's a fascinating book to read, and the author does a great job of making the material approachable. I particularly like how she breaks the process down and then explains how each principle works. She also provides historical resources and references which is helpful, but most of all she encourages readers to experiment and make the work their own. I felt like this book explained and filled in some gaps of knowledge I had about Eastern esoteric practices, while also enhancing the magical work I'm doing. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding Eastern esoteric practices or wanting to integrate such practices in their own spiritual work.
