The book looks and feels new except for the glued on paper on the front cover. It doesn't seem to come off which is really annoying. I would give it a higher rating but the cover is completely ruined now. Really bummed out about it.

The best book written and published in the USA on Russian folklore beliefs, namely, on evil spirits.

This is a must have book in order to understand some of the nuances of nineteenth century Russian novels. Many of the spirits and demons described will appear in novels from this time period. I will keep it on my reference shelf.

Fabulous, well-written, well-researched. Great combination of history and folklore. Absolutely loved this book.

Ivanits' Russian Folk Belief is a very useful, straightforward, and engrossing book about the beliefs of the Russian people, specifically focused on the dvovorie (dual-faith) Russian Orthodoxy/paganism practiced throughout the culture's history in the last millennium. It is well-written, does not condescend, and yet, is very readable and informative. This is a good place to start, for those curious about Russian historical folklore and spiritual belief. Highly recommended!

I find the book to be very interesting and have enjoyed learning about a culture that isn't discussed much in America.

This text was an additional purchase for a college class but well worth it. The text is easy to read and understand... thus easier to bridge information from one lecture to the next.

I was hoping to find out more about Russian fairy tales. Unfortunately, this book is more about the sort of mythology Russians actually believe (or believed) than the stories they might tell but not actually believe. For example, the book talks a lot about things like which saints Russian peasants believed would help their crops grow, but barely talks at all about Baba Yaga or Koschei the Deathless. The book is fine for what it is, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

Ian Frazier describes the Great Plains as a tourist might visiting a foreign country, charmed by its “otherness, romanticizing its strangeness. I’ve spent most of my life on or near the Great Plains. Most of the places he writes about are familiar. I must admit, though, that I have driven past many of the museums he stopped to visit, as I assumed they were at best vain attempts to claim that there was something significant or interesting about a mostly boring and unremarkable landscape. I still find other parts of the country to be far more beautiful and filled with many more things of interest, but the vast open spaces of the prairie still tug at my heart as no other place can. Thus, I found his book to be especially interesting as it has enabled me to see the familiar through the eyes of a stranger. I learned much that was new to me (including what was in the museums I have always driven by), and his writing, is captivating. One quibble: I found it strange that he almost completely overlooks the significance of the railroads to the Great Plains other than a passing remark about coal trains. Long before the development of air travel which made this “flyover country” railroads were an integral part of the development of this area, often determining which settlements succeeded and which failed. Many of the towns of the Great Plains still have a railway station, even if it is no longer in use. And, while only a smattering of passengers still travel my rail across these states, the railways still carry a vast amount of freight. It was strange, in fact, the he made no mention of the Union Pacific Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska, the largest rail yard in the world, through which an average of 139 trains per day pass through.

“The Plains Cree never washed their clothes, just bought new ones at the trader’s twice a year … The Crow chopped joints off their fingers in mourning so often that they hardly had a whole hand among them. The men generally saved their thumbs and one or two trigger fingers.” ‒ from GREAT PLAINS“The empty air was still vibrating slightly with the suppressed fidgets of children.” ‒ from GREAT PLAINS, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic in Strasburg, ND after the end of Sunday service“… the oil towns of Plainview and Midland and Odessa rise like offshore drilling rigs. In prosperous years, the push buttons of local pay telephones are smudged with oily fingerprints, and Laundromats have ‘Do Not Wash Rig Clothes Here’ signs.” ‒ from GREAT PLAINS“‘(Custer) killed a man when he fell. He laughed’, Sitting Bull said … I like to believe Custer even had fun dying … Custer finally ran into the largest off-reservation gathering of Indians ever in one place on the continent, and gave them what was possibly the last really good time they ever had.” ‒ from GREAT PLAINS“Driving on the prairie near Great Falls, Montana, or Minot, North Dakota, or Cheyenne, Wyoming, you might not realize right away that you are in a weapons system. A nuclear-missile silo is one of the quintessential Great Plains objects: to the eye, it is almost nothing … but to the imagination, it is the end of the world.” ‒ from GREAT PLAINSIn 1982, author Ian Frazier moved from New York to Kalispell, Montana. There, he started to dream about the Great Plains. And from there, he began his exploration of the landscape he dreamed about. In GREAT PLAINS, he tells us what he discovered.Although there may be an underlying structure to GREAT PLAINS, it wasn’t readily apparent to this reader beyond the chapter numbers. Rather it seems but an almost endless stream-of-thought collection of anecdotal stories of Frazier’s personal experiences driving the Great Plains mixed with historical asides about the region. It is, however, constantly fascinating. It was a disappointment when the narrative concluded at the 69% point when the book transitioned to the Notes Index; unhappily, the narrative itself isn’t endless.Beyond his own experiences with the people he meets and the places he visits, GREAT PLAINS is a varied mix of Great Plains past history and present realities: the identifying characteristics of the Indian tribes and their tepees, the old trapper rendezvous sites of Fort Union and Bent’s Fort, the plains grasses and tumbleweeds, Bonnie and Clyde, Billie the Kid, present-day abandoned homesteads, Custer, the Dustbowl, the influx of black settlers after the Civil War and that of German-speaking Russians in the late 19th century, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, the evolution of wheat types being planted and stored, present-day missile silos, strip mining, the 1862 Homestead Act, Lawrence Welk, the extermination of the buffalo, cattle drives, Dodge City of the “old west”, and the Indian Ghost Dance. The topics touched upon by Frazier are contextually fascinating and, thus, GREAT PLAINS is one of those books which compel the reader to Google search for more information.I enjoyed GREAT PLAINS more than I thought I would. When I fly over them next, I’ll pay more attention looking out the window.

This is a marvelous book, one of my favorites. If it has special meaning for me, it is because I grew up on those plains, where a man on a horse could ride through grasses so tall he could pass unseen. Some 50 years ago when I was a child, those prairies were neat lawns, shaven down to emerald squares topped by demure ranch houses on streets with names like Olathe Drive or Sioux Circle. Ian Frazier, in his epic work, "Great Plains," looks back to America's heart's past and sees again the vast herds of bison, the rutted trails West, the harsh light and harsher weather. His prose sings and dances with stories of people, red, white, black and yellow, who lived and bled on those plains under an endless blue sky, across an enormous landscape of golden plant life teeming with animals. That horizon ended only with the faintest smudge of gray, where the Rocky Mountains began. I knew only glimpses of my home place, living in Manhattan, where the flat, featureless streets bear no resemblance to the supposedly flat, featureless prairies. Then I read, for the first of many times, Frazier's paean to the Great Plains, and I knew I had found my way home.

Mr. Frazier retells the amazing story of the western plains. He brings the history alive by sharing lesser known facts and anecdotes of well known figures and great events. He brings us into the lives of modern people of the Plains by sharing what he learned meeting them, talking with them, and walking with them in their world. It is not always a pretty story, a sequence of happy endings. It is real, because the humans who lived it were real and we see them in action against a never to be repeated landscape of the opening of the west. It remains a magnificent story, and Ian Frazier tells it brilliantly.

From Booklist

More than 600 fascinating and sometimes macabre entries, arranged alphabetically and varying in length from a paragraph to several pages, provide definitions, explanations, and lists of references for Dogmen, mullos, skinwalkwers, and other scary creatures of the night. Author Guiley has researched and written numerous books on angels, saints, tarot, and the occult. This study has a balanced perspective, and sample entries include the familiar, like Dark Shadows (mistakenly described in the text as running from 1996 to 1971), Evil eye, Christopher Lee, and Ann Rice, as well as the more obscure, for example Kitsune, Spaulding family vampires, and wamphyri. Cross-references aid navigation, and many entries have short lists of further reading suggestions. More than 100 pictures and illustrations highlight and add interest to the entries. A short bibliography and an index conclude the work. From ancient customs to famous cases of beasts and vampires in popular culture, this interesting reference focuses on folklore, historical cases, cross-cultural mythology, and the presence of these creatures in the arts and entertainment fields. Covering Japanese, Mexican, Gypsy, and Bosnian variations, among others, the diversity of cultures represented is eye-opening, and similarities are amazing. General reference collections, especially those getting popular-culture questions, will want to add this volume. Susan AweCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Dr. Rosemary Guiley's encyclopedias of the paranormal, supernatural, magical and otherworldly realms are a treat to read as they are filled with lots of information based on meticulous research. I have several of her encyclopedias and find them informative and illuminating. This title compiles information on vampires, werewolves, and other monsters. The entries are arranged alphabetically, and there are many photographs and sketches included (all in B&W). The book itself is in an over-sized paperback format and the paper is of good quality for a paperback which I assume will hold up with frequent use (though I would have preferred a hardcover format with photographs and illustrations in a combination of color and B&W to enhance the reading experience).Though this encyclopedia covers vampires, werewolves, and other monsters, the entries on vampires are the most detailed. The author does a credible job of covering the various forms of vampirism, the types of vampires, the mythology of vampires and vampirism in various cultures, and the portrayal of vampires in popular culture, for example in iconic shows such as Dark Shadows DVD Collection 1,Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs), movies featuring vampires such as Dracula (75th Anniversary Edition) (Universal Legacy Series), the legendary actors who have portrayed the Count, and many more. The author indicates that she has put in lots of research into her work, with entries of vampires as depicted in various cultures, e.g. African, Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, etc. Despite this, I felt that some of the entries could have done with more elaboration. I hail from Southeast Asia myself and am quite familiar with the mythology of the vampire in SEA. I was glad to note the author included entries on 'pontianak' (female vampire), though it is far from complete. There is no mention that the pontianak is partial to the frangipani tree (a tree that has fragrant blooms) and also the banyan tree, or the belief that the pontianak can be turned back into a mortal female by driving a nail into the back of the creature's head. Nor it is mentioned that the pontianak is usually the result of a female who dies in childbirth as believed by many villagers in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. That aside, I felt that the coverage on werewolves and other monsters was underwhelming. I gathered from reading this encyclopedia that the other monsters were mainly shapeshifters, skinwalkers, etc. but once again the coverage was not exhaustive and the entries that were provided were not detailed, especially with reference to non-European cultures. On the whole though, I felt that the author deserves some praise for putting in the research for this book as there really aren't that many books or encyclopedias out there on this subject. This is not only entertaining and informative but also provides ideas for writers, and the bibliography provided under some entries are an added bonus for those keen on more research.

A must for every magical library! This is a pretty good source book for the creatures listed. I've used it on several occasions for papers. It's just the right size. Of course it doesn't contain every bit of information on the subject out there, but it's an overall well rounded encyclopedia that does have a large portion of popular common knowledge and more obscure information. The binding is great so the spine doesn't split when you open it. The format is nice and easy to follow and the entries are detailed. I would recommend as a good encyclopedia covering the topic of monsters.

A very fun encyclopedia on monsters. I really enjoyed other cultures monsters and how quite a bit of research was put into this book.

Dr. Guiley delivers a spectacular book once more, as she did with the Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits. This large book focuses largely on vampires; including vampire movies with plots and cast information but also reviews werewolves, vampire-like spirits, and all manner of undead and shape shifters. Dr. Guiley digs deep into every culture, unearthing legendery monsters from the East and West. I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable reading and very informative. Five stars. I look forward to her next encylopedia.

For anyone truly interested in Vampire and werewolf lore, this book includes stories and examples from various cultures as well as more modern examples from movies and novels. Its an interesting read, giving many short stories that illustrate the vampire and wolf lore from all around the world and through out history. It gives a great starting point for anyone researching the subject. It has complete notes citing original sources.

Very in depth, very informational.

I absolutely love this book. Easy reading, super informative. Highly recommended this book for anyone even remotely interested in this type of info.

The book has a smaller section on werewolves that I would have hoped. Its pretty straight forward with little skims of information, I find it helpful as a writer but for someone who just wants a book with better general information there is more out there.

I just wish he would publish on a more regular basis. I do believe my favorite character is Oberon. If you don't know who Oberon is, you best get busy with your reading and start with the Iron Druid series!

I have been reading Kevin Hearne’s since 2012. His first series is called The Iron Druid Chronicles and this short story is part of that series. I have attempted to write reviews for this series but I love them so much that I am not sure how I would handle my audience rejection of them. I think I have evolved as a reader and blogger at this point in my life and I am ready to share.Let’s start with the main character, Atticus O’Sullivan, who is the last living druid. Atticus along with his apprentice Granuaile MacTiernan and his loyal Irish Wolfhound, Oberon, are visiting Granuaile’s hometown to check in on her mother who thinks she is dead. They come across some pretty shady things happening at the freaks tent and proceed to try and defeat some demons, imps, and ghouls and hopefully save some human life at the same time.I may be a little biased here because I love everything Kevin writes. This short was no exception. The characters come to life and his storytelling captivates his readers from the get-go. I am not including a review of the audio recording because I am a devoted Luke Daniel’s fan and in my view, no one can be the voice of Atticus or Oberon but Luke Daniels. Since this short was part of an anthology of various authors I assume this is why they went with a different voice actor. Thus, my review would not be a fair one. I do have to say that my students did like his reading though.

Kevin Hearne . . what can be said about this amazing author? For anyone who has fallen in love with The Iron Druid Chronicles, this side story is an absolute must. Hearne's character and plot development are exceptional (considering it took him years to be published) and his writing style will capture the reader's attention within the very first paragraph. If you have read all of the available Iron Druid books, I highly recommend this addition to your library.

There are no more books for me to read; I have completed everything out there at this time of review. But this story was fun because it was a jump into the past to read a bit about the main characters before Atticus had completed training his apprentice. A good story.

It's nice to have another story about Atticus and his adventures. This one arrived just in time for Halloween which adds to the experience. I may never go to a haunted house again after reading this adventure and it is certain, if I get the choice between heaven or Hell, I am not picking Hell~!!

I really wish this author would write some new books in this series. I really enjoyed e dry book in the series and am wanting More! Great author defiantly worth the time to read But do start with the first book to get to know the characters

Loaded a bunch of the Kevin Hearne "back stories" on my kindle. They were fun, quick reading, a laugh or two. Not as much fun or as creative as his Druid chronicles.

If you are an Iron Druid fan this is a good expansion of the characters and the Iron Druid universe. It almost makes me wish Kevin would do more short stories and fewer books.

I read this short story after reading all of Kevin Hearne's full-length Iron Druid/Atticus O'Sullivan novels, and enjoyed all of them immensely. Since I don't like normally go for demon stuff, I don't know if I would have liked this story as much if I wasn't already invested in the main characters. But I was, so I did.

#27,256 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I found this book in the #WeNeedDiverseBooks catalog on Scholastic Book Clubs, which is my favorite place to shop for my classroom. This book appealed to me because it was a graphic novel, and because of its premise in examining gender norms.Aster is a boy who lives in a magical society where the girls are trained to be witches, and the boys are supposed to grow to be shapeshifters. Aster's shapeshifting magic hasn't come to him, and he's really much more interested in witchery. At one part of the story, he points out to the other boys that it's silly that the girls are in lessons learning things while they are just running around playing fighting games. As a teacher, this made me smile! His family then runs into a mysterious danger, and no one will listen to him when he thinks he has a way to help make things right. Will he be able to use magic his way to help save his family? This book features a diverse cast, which is readily apparent to the reader thanks to the graphic novel format. Aster is a likable protagonist, as is his friend Charlie. I love the message that shatters the binary gender norms, especially because they are sometimes quite rigid in this age group. When I listed the books I had bought to my students this last year, some of them questioned me on how the title could be "The Witch Boy." Even in the world of fantasy, they had clear gender norms established in their head. I am all for books that can help loosen those norms and create more open minds. There is no reason for our children to feel like there are things that they cannot do or be because they have been assigned a certain gender. Because of its fantasy setting, I feel like it's a book that can be more readily accepted by readers and gatekeepers with more conservative views. This kind of representation is very important for our children who are coming of age and discovering themselves.Because it's a middle grade novel, the plot of THE WITCH BOY moved very quickly and I would have loved more details about the characters and the world. However, I think it'll be more than enough to keep kids engaged, and the story line is easy to follow. It's a quick read, which is a huge plus for some of our reluctant readers, and my students were definitely attracted to the full color, high-quality pages. This was the nicest looking book in the book order that it came in, and one of my students must have liked it enough to keep it, because it never made it back and I had to order a new one on Amazon.

cute story and great art.I like it just fine.Although it does do a bit of a too heavy handed "parents never understand thing".which is a part of the thing's theme. I get that. Still though, having a secret family of magic peeps being staunch gender conformity supporters doesn't make sense. Witches have an extensive history of cross gender stuff. There are a few not so great magic rules that the book doesn't really answer but I can't expect it to.It's a very short story and doesn't have time to answer my quibbles. It's a delightful read, but it does have flaws. I'd give an average book 3 or 4 stars. but seeing as how important this sort of story is I'm giving it the full 5. It is creative enough to deserve it and the majority of the metaphors and representation are treated very well and understandable through a child's eyes.I look forward to the prospect of reading this story to my kids.

We got this book when it first came out. I forgot to review it.My then 6yo loved it. He read the ending over and over. He really identified with Aster and Charlie, both kids who maybe don't quite fit in how they were expected to.I read it as soon as it arrived in the mail. I was afraid it might be too intense for my 6yo at the time (an advanced reader) and i worried it might deal with subjects that felt a bit raw for him, but I left it lying around, hadn't decided what to do, and he just read it as soon as he saw it. It *was* intense but ultimately he loved it. My other kid didn't read it until the day the sequel came out and then he read it several more times in the days to follow.I read recommend this graphic novel, but especially if you have a kid who due to interests or gender expression or anything else feels like they don't fit right in their communities.

I had high hopes for this book, maybe too high.First off, the pictures are GORGEOUS. I love the style of drawing used here. The world building is pretty cool too. I loved the main character. He's sweet but still thinks about his own needs, and is naive but in a way that's appropriate for his age. However, the plot is lacking. The "surprise villain" is pretty much the most obvious "twist" you could have come up with. Literally the exposition in the first SCENE spells it out for you. The side plot, a friendship with a non-magic girl, is a cool idea. She has a broken leg, and she doesn't want to tell the protagonist what happened. They make it out to be this big suspenseful secret so I was thinking abuse? assault? bullying? But no. (spoilers if you care) but some kids were teasing her so she dared them to make a jump with their bikes and she did it first and fell. I understand they're supposed to be middle school aged and this could seem embarrassing but I mean? Also the metaphors get pretty annoying as a teen reader. I understand that for children this could help them understand complex issues around sexuality and gender, but I mean we get it.All in all, I'm not disappointed I read it. I think it had some great qualities, but it just wasn't for me.

This book was amazing! I loved the designs and the overall art style. The story was well written and I feel like many kids out there can relate to Aster and Charlie, being someone who doesn't fit society's picture of what they should be. I loved how Aster was able to be his true self and even though his parents don't quite understand 100% they still love and accept him for who he is. Would definitely recommend to others and I can't wait to read more from this author.

Amazing graphic novel. I love the art and the writing! I pre-purchased the hardcover edition of The Witch Boy because I have read the author's webcomic Strong Female Protagonist. The book itself is extremely well made. The binding is firm and the pages turn well. The characters are warm, charming, and well written. After reading this book with my two boys, I plan on donating it to their elementary school library.

First things first. Ken Wells is one of America’s best writers. That is simply a fact, not an opinion. In his newest book, Gumbo Life, he has written another masterpiece of the genre called great writing. Mr. Wells has lived and written (chiefly as a journalist) all over the world. (Picture a died-in-the-wool Cajun living in London for several years.) His book “The Good Pirates of the Forgotten Bayous” is the best written work on Hurricane Katrina, a seminal event in the history of South Louisiana.Gumbo Life is a paean to not only the ambrosia called Gumbo but also a love letter to his spiritual home and its people (what he calls the “Gumbo Belt). Mr. Wells, in addition to his excellence as a non-fiction writer, has penned the fiction Catahoula Bayou Trilogy of life in the Bayou Black region of South Louisiana (highly recommended). His feel for dialog and the nuances of the temperament and world-view of the region is not manufactured. He just steps into a time machine of his memories and must have taken his iPhone to record this stuff with such accuracy.I am a life long resident of this Gumbo Belt. I have eaten gumbo for over 60 years and cooked many pots myself; what I knew about gumbo was that it is GOOD. This book completes my education. In the first chapters, Mr. Wells respectfully and skillfully addresses the history and “modern” progression of this magnificent gift from God we call Gumbo. He deconstructs what we now call cultural appropriation of its name and roots, from the Native Americans and African-American slaves to the fortunate (for us) arrival of the Cajuns to my (as his) home in South Louisiana. In this section, Mr. Wells demonstrates his skill as a journalist, historian and erudite teacher. It is sometimes an academic ethnological treatise but most often a metaphor for the gumbo of the cultural blending of what makes American great.Where Mr. Wells really shines is in the rest of the book, where he shares stories seeking an answer to the most important question to those who live in the Gumbo belt: Who makes the best gumbo? In some sense, this focus is similar to Mark Kurlansky's, books on salt, milk and cod. In some sense it is similar to Rick Bragg’s recent book on the home cooking of his childhood in another part of the South. The difference is that Mr. Wells is a far superior writer and storyteller. This book will make you laugh out loud and without pretension, will educate you on the life and beauty of what the blending of immigration has done for our country. My only issue is on his insistence that his mama’s gumbo was the best. I respect his devotion to his mother, but unfortunately he did not have the privilege to taste my mama’s gumbo. He is correct however that a chicken and sausage gumbo must have a dark roux and the file must be used while serving, not cooked in the gumbo. Mr. Wells is respectful of those who follow a different drummer, but as he and I know, they are wrong.I also wish he had omitted his discovery that some put sweet potatoes in a gumbo. That is a fact I did not need to know. This book is highly recommended.

Ken Wells is truly one of the BEST writers of Louisiana folkways. This book is part memoir, part history, part mouth-watering food blog and 100% delightful. He guides you through a wonderland of gumbo adventures from an International Gumbo Festival in New Iberia (where you learn about whiskey-infused whipped cream shots), to the kitchen of Commanders Palace (they put brandy and foie gras in their gumbo), to the fabulous “gumbo factory” of Chef Folse (I want to go on THAT tour). It includes several great interviews of cooking icons all over the GUMBO BELT of south Louisiana like Wayne Baquet of Lil Dizzys in the Treme. Though he cooks up a mean gumbo, it’s red beans and rice with his designer sausage he would be asking for as a last meal on death row. You’ll learn that Dooky Chase’s was one of the first black-owned, fine-dining restaurants in America where Martin Luther King Jr. hung out strategizing with other civil rights activists back in the day. New words pop up like roder (ro-day) which means to idly roam or sightsee. You are shocked as he describes the proper way to cook and eat squirrel brains (eeww) but laugh when he tells the story of the headless frog that jumped out of his mom’s frying pan when it hit the hot grease and drool as he gives you the step by step process of preparing real Cajun French coffee AND HOMEMADE BLUEBERRY DUMPLINGS. Ahhhh! My only criticism, and this isn’t for Ken, but for his EDITORS. There were several missing pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions which made me have to go back and re-read sentences. That’s YOUR JOB, people at Norton. I won’t mention any names, M.T. It still gets 5 stars. In fact I’d give it 10 stars if I could.

This was one of the best books I have read about Cajun life on the bayou! It was so interesting and funny too. I lived in Louisiana for a few years and visited in that area. I have even tried his mother's recipe and it was delicious! Fun reliving my years there.

Fate has ordained that my stomach cannot digest bell peppers. That means I have never eaten and will never eat gumbo. But I ate this book! It’s about gumbo cooking, sure, but more about gumbo cooks. They populate an American enclave less familiar to me than the highlands of New Guinea. And they’re alive in the wild, swarming swamp of Ken Wells’s memories of kinfolk and kidhood. His writing goes down as smoothly as gumbo must for those more fortunate. How I roux the day those peppers turned against me. “Gumbo Life” has left me steeped the bayou’s pungent spirit, and very hungry.

This book is simple exceptional. The writing is exquisite and draws you in from the first paragraph. This isn't just about gumbo,, but rather an entire culture. Yes, there are recipes, but the highlight has to be how enjoyable the author has made this read. Buy this book!

I read Gumbo Life while on vacation in Puerto Rico. We were staying with a chef who knew little of gumbo...I read aloud from the book so much that HE wanted a copy (which I sent, of course). This book is beautifully written and scholarly yet great fun (and mouth watering). I was at the grocery store within hours of getting home for onions, bell pepper, and celery (holy trinity) plus chicken thighs and andouille to add to the quail I already had. HEAVEN! Read it! Especially those of you for whom Winter won't be over for several more months. You'll be happy you did.

Bonnie's boy takes you into her home to see how she created this scrumptious dish and then follows a path into other people's homes and restaurants all along the gumbo belt. In his downhome descriptions, Wells lets us know the origin and development and variations of gumbo. We happily discover how this little-known dish has become so popular worldwide. Readers like me will want to rush to the kitchen and start making a roux!
