Written in the first person by "Terry," the central character is Vernon James, a self made multi-millionaire.After a long night in a hotel where James was collecting an ethics award, James is accused of murdering a woman in his hotel suite. There is a lot of action in the hours leading up to the murder and a lot of action after. Terry, an underachiever, is a recent hire as a clerk in a prestigious law firm. For no apparent reason, he is loathed by his co-workers but championed by his boss, Janet. In what he believes is a fluke, Terry is assigned to assist Janet as she tries to defend James.Terry and Vernon James have a history. Terry, a recovering alcoholic, was kicked out of Cambridge, an event which haunts him and for which he blames James. There are more twists and turns in this novel than a Swiss secondary road, some of which lead exactly nowhere but some of which lead everywhere.It's a fun read and that's a good thing because the text is so replete with terrible sentence structure and grammatical errors that one might have been tempted to toss it after a chapter or two based on the deplorable editing. If you can get around that, it's worth the effort

This is a long book, 2 MP3 disks. Really interesting story that kept me listening even though I didn't really like any of the characters, and that usually makes me abandon a book. I didn't like the accent the reader used for the main character and several other big characters. Perhaps it was realistic, but it really grated on my ears--a low-class accent. The main character was working in a law office as a temp, but as the story went on, he became part of a major criminal defense and met with the defendant, various other barristers, and judges and I wondered if such an accent wouldn't be an issue is such a situation. I am not an expert on British accents, but I have never heard a British person pronounce the name Terry as Terrah. If the character was posh, the accent the reader used was good.I thought the work-related interplay was excellent.I also thought that the investigation overlooked some obvious things.

To me this was a great, long, enjoyable story. I listened to the audible version on my commutes and read some on it in between. I enjoyed the main character as he learned about the law and I was interested til the end. A good solid read!

This is the first book I have read by this author. I saw he had written more books which I plan to order. His book is a real page Turner which keeps your interest from the beginning until the end. Sometimes I could feel my heart rate going up. If you are searching for a great legal novel I highly recommend this book. I can hardly wait to read another book written by him. That is why I gave him 5 stars!!!!!

Liked most: Character development of Christine, one of the few characters I cared what happened to her one way or the other.Liked least. Stone failed to develop characters I cared anything about. He totally failed to live up to the title he chose, leaving me indifferent about "The Verdict" i.e., whether Vernon James was found innocent or guilty. Generally poor character development. Rambling, disjointed plot.

I have not read anything by this author before but will look for him now. Story has lots of twists and turns. Takes place in 2011 and incorporates some history from that time. Protagonist is not so much a hero as a believable character, well developed.

I prefer American legal thrillers so I hesitated before buying The Verdict. I am so glad I bought it as it is such a page-turner.The main character was on track to a promising career when he is expelled from Cambridge. His best friend framed him. Now the friend needs his help to fight a charge of murder. The plot is complex and unpredictable with a satisfying conclusion.

THE VERDICT was not a novel I would normally have chosen, but I'm now glad I did. The twists and turns kept me interested even after the jury's verdict was read in court.

Great book. Lost idea in today's world sadly.

The chapters dealing with "The Meaning of Masculinity" and "The Meaning of Femininity" are dealt with by the use of carefully constructed definitions that are unfolded word-by-word. Extensive space is given to describing the masculine role of leadership. Piper's approach is Scriptural, and therefore relevant; and he labors hard to bridge any apparant gaps between the Biblical model and its contemporary relevance. He avoids hard and fast rules for specific circumstances, and sticks to sold principles which should govern male-female relationships of differing levels. This would be an excellent book for pastoral premarital counselling.

Terrible... I have a conservative background, my gf has a liberal background. We read through this together and were both pretty put off by it. He makes wild claims about what is the right and "mature" thing to do. At one point he basically lists a bunch of career types that women shouldn't do.

Heartbreaking story of a little boy that just wanted to be loved. All the things this child went through seem impossible for him to still be so sweet and charming. He has a heart of gold and compassion for those that are not so nice to him. His Mother sadly just didn't have what it took to support one more child. I would love to meet him as an adult. I'm sure "Doggy" Is still around. I loved the story, so touching. A child should always know love and he is loved.

It`s difficult to believe that places like those where Jennings lived exist, but they do. It`s even more difficult to believe that people like some of those in this book exist, but, sadly, they do. I am glad that Jennings eventually found people who loved him and who took good care of him. I know it was difficult to put this experience down on paper, but thank you for writing this book and sharing with the world Jennings! You are blessed and you bless others with your story.

This books is so sad, but unfortunately this happens all to often. I couldn't put the book down. It kept me wondering if maybe he would find the forever home and someone would adopt him. Thanks God for Sal and at the end when hefinally was able to tell him , I love you. Loved this book.

Loved this story that shows a child who learned to survive & make a life for himself, despite living in a dysfunctional home & in abusive foster homes, never knowing when his life would take him into terrorizing situations. He also found friendships with 2 adults who “stepped up to the plate” to help this boy get by in life when other adults who should have taken care of him just could not do what they needed to do. A true story......

I am still crying from this beautiful story. It wasn't graphic at all but so heartwarming and touching. It really makes you think about how lucky we are and that there are truly kind people in the world. I wish there was a sequel. I would love to read more about this beautiful man and his life. We should remember to show kindness to people every once in a while, you never know what they are going through. I want to turn back to page one and read it all over again!

One of the best books ever, albeit extremely sad! I first read it in middle school then revisited it and oh man is it sad! So we’ll written though and what a great story in the end! I would love to see it made into a movie.

This was a very sad and heart warming story about a small child and his struggles going in and out of foster care, and living with his dysfunctional family as he grows up.I felt that the book was a rather good read, there were several parts that were heart wrenching and heart warming. However by the end of the book it feels like the events just kept repeating themselves. It was like the same events just kept happening over and over with only minor changes in each incident. I also felt that the end of the book happened too fast and was kept open with no closure at all.I still would recommened this book for people to read, but unfortanitly it just wasn't one of my favorites.

An emotional and heart wrenching story told from the perspective of a boy who spends his childhood in and out of orphanages and foster care homes. I was required to read this book for a class, and boy did it go way beyond what I was expecting. I cried and felt the pain he experienced with every blow, both physically and emotionally. Tough to read this story, but it's based on stuff that happens to children every day. Jennings is an inspiration and I'm blessed to have gotten a glimpse of his story.

Quite good as an overview, but I found some serious errors. For example, the author says, on page 149, "Don't bother notifying your mortgage holder or your insurance company that you have placed your home in a living trust."Huh?The deed has to be transferred from your name to the trustee's name (which might still be you, "Jane Doe, Trustee for the Jane Doe Living Trust," instead of just "Jane Doe.")The problem is that the law considers Jane Doe the individual and Jane Doe trustee, to be different entities. Which means the mortgage company will learn that the property has changed hands, and theoretically could cause you more trouble than if you'd just done it the right way to begin with. Also, Jane Doe, Trustee, the new owner, won't necessarily be insured by your insurance policy if your insurer isn't informed of the change in deed.That makes this poor advice.As I'm not an attorney, I can't judge other advice in the book beyond the bits I know from experience. It seems to be a good overview to help you begin thinking/planning about how you might like to handle your estate, and what might be involved. By all means, though, don't rely entirely on the advice you read here. It might end up costing you.

This is the 4rth book I have read on Estate Planning, and it is by far and away the best. Covers wills, trusts, life insurance, lawyers, burial arrangements and health care. I liked the fact it directs you to other resources if more information is needed. Also presents many examples of what to do in different situations. Covers trusts in a more detailed manner than any of the other books I have read. This is the only book you really need if you are educating yourself on estate planning and trying to determine what needs to be done and how to do it.

Whether you are doing your own estate plan or consulting an attorney, this book will give you a clear picture of what's important to consider, how it all plays out, and what your options are. Very well written for lay persons.

Most books for the consumer fail when providing too much detail or, in the case of a product, so many technofeatures that only an engineer could appreciate them. This book strikes the balance between sufficient comprehensiveness to be a consumer's bible on estate planning without so much detail as to be overwhelming. And importantly, the author is truly as a consumer advocate--to minimize the need for you to use an attorney while recognizing at times, that is what is required. Certainly, reading this will make you a more informed consumer when you do consult an attorney, thereby reducing the number of those expensive hours you'll have to pay your friendly barrister.

For almost 40 years I have used the books from Nolo (formerly known as Nolo Press in Berkeley). They provide do-it-yourself books for many legal issues at a low cost (I filed my divorce papers without an attorney using their book). This one is extremely well-written and covers the primary issues regarding legal and financial issues regarding estates. Obviously if you are prodded into establishing a living trust, will, whatever after reading this book it will be worth it. A solid 5 stars!

I originally took this book out at the library. It was so good and helpful, that I ponied up for my own copy. There is a lot to consider in estate planning. This book touches all the bases. I've been impressed with the Nolo books in general. The one on being an executor/trustee is also really good, but that one I can just get the latest version at the library when I need it. Estate planning, though, is a long-term process for which I wanted a reference to refer back to time and again. No wonder there have been several editions of this book; it's really good.

I think most people know they should have a will, a living will (advanced directive or Medical Power of Attorney) and a Power of Attorney, but this book gives a lot of detail on those, as well as other instruments, related to end of life and death. It addresses different life scenarios such as disinteriting someone, unmarried partners, etc. And, it makes you think through issues like the impact on those you name, and potential (sometimes unintended) consequences of your decisions. I'm glad I purchased the book.

The book looks and feels new except for the glued on paper on the front cover. It doesn't seem to come off which is really annoying. I would give it a higher rating but the cover is completely ruined now. Really bummed out about it.

The best book written and published in the USA on Russian folklore beliefs, namely, on evil spirits.

This is a must have book in order to understand some of the nuances of nineteenth century Russian novels. Many of the spirits and demons described will appear in novels from this time period. I will keep it on my reference shelf.

Fabulous, well-written, well-researched. Great combination of history and folklore. Absolutely loved this book.

Ivanits' Russian Folk Belief is a very useful, straightforward, and engrossing book about the beliefs of the Russian people, specifically focused on the dvovorie (dual-faith) Russian Orthodoxy/paganism practiced throughout the culture's history in the last millennium. It is well-written, does not condescend, and yet, is very readable and informative. This is a good place to start, for those curious about Russian historical folklore and spiritual belief. Highly recommended!

I find the book to be very interesting and have enjoyed learning about a culture that isn't discussed much in America.

This text was an additional purchase for a college class but well worth it. The text is easy to read and understand... thus easier to bridge information from one lecture to the next.

I was hoping to find out more about Russian fairy tales. Unfortunately, this book is more about the sort of mythology Russians actually believe (or believed) than the stories they might tell but not actually believe. For example, the book talks a lot about things like which saints Russian peasants believed would help their crops grow, but barely talks at all about Baba Yaga or Koschei the Deathless.The book is fine for what it is, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

Ian Frazier describes the Great Plains as a tourist might visiting a foreign country, charmed by its “otherness, romanticizing its strangeness. I’ve spent most of my life on or near the Great Plains. Most of the places he writes about are familiar. I must admit, though, that I have driven past many of the museums he stopped to visit, as I assumed they were at best vain attempts to claim that there was something significant or interesting about a mostly boring and unremarkable landscape. I still find other parts of the country to be far more beautiful and filled with many more things of interest, but the vast open spaces of the prairie still tug at my heart as no other place can. Thus, I found his book to be especially interesting as it has enabled me to see the familiar through the eyes of a stranger. I learned much that was new to me (including what was in the museums I have always driven by), and his writing, is captivating.One quibble: I found it strange that he almost completely overlooks the significance of the railroads to the Great Plains other than a passing remark about coal trains. Long before the development of air travel which made this “flyover country” railroads were an integral part of the development of this area, often determining which settlements succeeded and which failed. Many of the towns of the Great Plains still have a railway station, even if it is no longer in use. And, while only a smattering of passengers still travel my rail across these states, the railways still carry a vast amount of freight. It was strange, in fact, the he made no mention of the Union Pacific Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska, the largest rail yard in the world, through which an average of 139 trains per day pass through.

It was a disappointment when the narrative concluded at the 69% point when the book transitioned to the Notes Index; unhappily, the narrative itself isn’t endless.Beyond his own experiences with the people he meets and the places he visits, GREAT PLAINS is a varied mix of Great Plains past history and present realities: the identifying characteristics of the Indian tribes and their tepees, the old trapper rendezvous sites of Fort Union and Bent’s Fort, the plains grasses and tumbleweeds, Bonnie and Clyde, Billie the Kid, present-day abandoned homesteads, Custer, the Dustbowl, the influx of black settlers after the Civil War and that of German-speaking Russians in the late 19th century, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, the evolution of wheat types being planted and stored, present-day missile silos, strip mining, the 1862 Homestead Act, Lawrence Welk, the extermination of the buffalo, cattle drives, Dodge City of the “old west”, and the Indian Ghost Dance. The topics touched upon by Frazier are contextually fascinating and, thus, GREAT PLAINS is one of those books which compel the reader to Google search for more information.I enjoyed GREAT PLAINS more than I thought I would. When I fly over them next, I’ll pay more attention looking out the window.

This is a marvelous book, one of my favorites. If it has special meaning for me, it is because I grew up on those plains, where a man on a horse could ride through grasses so tall he could pass unseen. Some 50 years ago when I was a child, those prairies were neat lawns, shaven down to emerald squares topped by demure ranch houses on streets with names like Olathe Drive or Sioux Circle. Ian Frazier, in his epic work, "Great Plains," looks back to America's heart's past and sees again the vast herds of bison, the rutted trails West, the harsh light and harsher weather. His prose sings and dances with stories of people, red, white, black and yellow, who lived and bled on those plains under an endless blue sky, across an enormous landscape of golden plant life teeming with animals. That horizon ended only with the faintest smudge of gray, where the Rocky Mountains began. I knew only glimpses of my home place, living in Manhattan, where the flat, featureless streets bear no resemblance to the supposedly flat, featureless prairies. Then I read, for the first of many times, Frazier's paean to the Great Plains, and I knew I had found my way home.

Mr. Frazier retells the amazing story of the western plains. He brings the history alive by sharing lesser known facts and anecdotes of well known figures and great events. He brings us into the lives of modern people of the Plains by sharing what he learned meeting them, talking with them, and walking with them in their world. It is not always a pretty story, a sequence of happy endings. It is real, because the humans who lived it were real and we see them in action against a never to be repeated landscape of the opening of the west. It remains a magnificent story, and Ian Frazier tells it brilliantly.
