This book SAVED MY DOGS LIFE!!! It is worth a fortune to me.Soon after reading this book, I found lump on my dog's neck. I took it to my vet, who I have a great deal of trust in; and, she told me that it was a fatty tumor and nothing to worry about. She did say to keep an eye on it and come back if it changed. Apparently, fatty tumors are very common.Dr. Messoninier stated in his book that if you find ANY type of tumor on your dog, at least have an aspiration done; but, it would be best to have the tumor biopsied. He stated that he could not stress this enough because Mast Cell Carcinoma is a great mimicker of all kinds of tumors.Not wanting to take any chances after him being so emphatic about further investigation of tumors on dogs, I had the tumor removed and biopsied. The biopsy results came back showing that my dogs had the beginning stages of Mast Cell Cancer!Had I not read this book and taking the information seriously, more than likely the cancer would have been spreading in his body and eventually killed him or the severe damage to the stomach cause by it would have. From this book, I found out why my dogs was having severe, bloody diarrhea that the vet could not get under control. Once the tumor was removed, the diarrhea stopped.After that, I have learned from several friends whose dogs have died from Mast Cell Cancer. Their vets thought the tumors were benign and they had spread through their bodies before they were discovered.I cannot recommend this book enough. My beloved 4 legged friend is alive because of it.

When your beloved dog is diagnosed with lymphoma, information like this is a saving grace. Every page of this perfectly written and well organised book is filled with clean science, covering natural, alternative options as well as traditional chemotherapies, and how to combine them for the best outcome. It greatly helps to educate a caregiver and and has empowered me to know that I'm doing the very best I can to help my "Boop" to maintain his health while fighting cancer. When Boop (6 yr. old Golden Retriever) was diagnosed with T-cell (a far worse prognosis than B-cell) lymphoma on Christmas Eve, of 2014, no words could describe the devastation I felt. Living on the Big Island of Hawaii, there were no options for veterinary oncology. But something inspired our wonderful vet to open her heart and her practice and treat him here. I believe that her choice was in part made because she knew we would all work as a team. This book is helping me greatly to be a real member of my dog's healing team, not just crying helplessly from the sidelines. I send loving healing energies to all who are or who have been through this life-changing experience.

If you have a dog with cancer, this book will be a very useful tool. I appreciate how both the western (traditional) methods of treatment (radiation, chemotherapy and surgery) are covered as well as many eastern (complimentary/holistic) methods.I purchased this book after one of my huskies was diagnosed and treated for cancer. Luckily, we went through having a holistic vet, oncologist and surgeon for his care. Although he is cancer free now, I wish I would have picked this up sooner. Most of the information we had learned while researching and communication with his veterinarians/specialists. This useful tool would have made things a bit simpler. I find this guide still useful toward helping keep him cancer free, as well as helping prevent cancer in his brother and dad (also huskies).This book will be helpful with letting you know what's available and how each of the methods work, and what can help with preparing your dog for this fight. Decisions are very stressful, yet a resource like this can definitely help give a calm with having a better understanding of the options available. I'd recommend this book especially to anyone who has a dog with cancer or caring for a senior dog. You'll find a lot of useful information throughout the pages for preventing and fighting cancer.

Interesting and informative. However, the title is misleading in that there is no "Prevention" information in the book except for three pages that tell you the basics: Feed a great diet, limit vaccinations etc. It's more of a treating cancer in dogs book. The author prefaces the "Prevention" chapter with the fact that there is no way to prevention cancer in dogs. Hence, a real waste of money for those seeking a way to prevent cancer in their dogs.

Very informative and comprehensive. Written by a veterinarian, it covets all kinds of modalities for treating cancer. Also discusses cancer prevention. My dog currently has two types of cancer unfortunately. It has been devastating. This book gives the pet guardian tne ability to exert some conntrol in a scary situation by giving you information to make choices, informed decisions regarding treatment options. However, does not delve into Traditional Chinese Medicine. But maybe that is an entirely different/other book. Well organized written.

Very interesting and helpful! My dog had a very small mast cell tumor and it was removed. It was grade 1 and he has recovered well. I found this book and I will change my dogs diet. Vet said my dog will be fine! I am blessed. I suggest those that have their four legged hearts with cancer read this book.

His knowledge of not only the Word of God but also the Spirit of God allows him to explain the principles of the word and spirit that is so sensible you just get it. I have a shelf full of them and refer to them on a regular basis.

Crime is all but extinct (as are many animals) and the elder residents are pampered and taken care of until the day of their Release to Elsewhere. The children undergo a strict form of training where emphasis is on manners, precise language and obedience.When Jonas turns twelve he is selected as the new Receiver of Memory. As the Receiver in Training , Jonas’ training consists of taking on all the community’s memories from the outgoing Receiver. Once his training begins, Jonas becomes privy to situations, places, sensations and feelings that has him quickly understanding that nothing is as it seems in his idyllic community. The world he lives in vastly differs from the memories of the Giver, and in some instances, is a flat out lie. As he gains knowledge of concepts such as family holidays, seasons, conflict and even color; Jonas realizes that the Sameness of his community is not ideal; it’s cruel brainwashing When faced with this truth, Jonas realizes that he also now has something that the rest of the community doesn't .... a choice.As far as novels that you must read because you are in school and it’s assigned goes, this is probably one of the better ones. I remember when I was in school all the books we had to read were completely boring it truly is a wonder I love reading after the dreck I was exposed to!Jonas world is bleak and boring. Nobody sees color, everyone is taught to be painfully polite as they go about their lives volunteering at various places, discussing their dreams and feelings all the while being totally naïve to the things that they are missing. At least in the Hunger Games, the folks in District Twelve knew they had it bad… the people in Jonas’ community are like the proverbial frogs in the boiling pot. The Giver has provided quite a few topics of discussion for my son and I as I am sure it has provided for his class and I am sure it will continue to provide in the future.While the Giver is identified as Teen & Young Adult, do not, for one minute believe it is written on an elementary level. The topics that are addressed, either in passing or in greater depth are compelling and thought provoking. Even after I finished this book, I find myself thinking about a person, situation or comment and still being affected. The cliffhanger ending will leave the reader with a mixed feeling of relief and curiosity. As part of a quartet of books by Lois Lowry, I am looking forward to reading more books in this series for more glimpses into dystopia through Lois Lowry’s eyes.

Yesterday, I took a road trip with my two daughters to get pick up my 88 year-old grandmother, who will be staying with us through the holiday season. At 5 and 9 years-old, my usual audiobook choices were clearly not an option. So, I found myself listening to some books that definitely are not my usual type, yet again.With over 4 1/2 hours in the car each way, we were able to finish 2 audiobooks from start to finish. By pure coincidence, they both ended up being authored by Lois Lowry. I have never been more engaged in a children's book than I was during this road trip. I was completely lost in these stories, as were my children.The first book that we listened to was 'The Giver'. What a captivating, albeit bleak, fictional world Ms. Lowry has created! I was absolutely spellbound by her storytelling.Set in the future, Jonas lives in a community that has traded their humanity for the illusion of safety. They block anything that would trigger the emotional highs and lows that define a person's life as we now know it. They don't experience the heartache of loss, but they never give in to the joys of life either. They are shells, robotic in their day to day existence and devoid of emotion.Although this is a children's book, it had a feeling eerily similar to George Orwell's '1984'. Independent thinking was non-existent. People "confessed" their thoughts, dreams and rule violations. The presence of the omnipresent leaders in their homes, ruling their lives, was pervasive and all-powerful.Jonas is getting ready to experience the ceremony of 12. This particular ceremony is an important one in the community, a rite of passage into adulthood. It is at this ceremony that each child is assigned their job within the community. They will remain in their assigned role until they are no longer productive and they are "released".Unlike the other children, Jonas is unsure of his calling within the community. He doesn't feel a clear draw to one occupation or another. He is worried of what the future holds for him and he is beginning to notice some unusual things that others do not.Jonas is ultimately assigned a very prestigious role within the community. It is perhaps the most important role in the community, but comes with a tremendous burden. He cannot share his experiences with anyone other than the man that he will be replacing, the current "receiver". As his training progresses, Jonas comes to question everything that he has ever been taught.From beginning to end, this book held my rapt attention. It was beautifully written and thought provoking. 'The Giver' serves as a cautionary tale to the human race, warning of what can become when we censor our very emotions and blot out all of the differences that make us unique individuals.There was plenty of action and suspense along the way. It was also a much more emotional read than I had anticipated. I'll never forget the look on my 9 year-old's face when some of the true meanings of different phrases, like "released", truly sunk in. Don't even get me going on baby Gabe! Luckily, I think most of that went over the head of my 5 year-old.Overall, I thought that this was a spectacular book! It is one that I would not have normally read, but I'm so glad that I did. I can only hope that the lessons learned will resonate with my daughter and the other children that read it. An all-around great story! I'll probably download the next books in the series for our next road-trip to take "Nana" home after the holidays.

I am an Aerospace Engineering student and bought this book to supplement my Controls course. The book is informative and helpful. Before starting my Controls course, I used MATLAB but wasn't familiar with many of the controls functions and their purposes. This book does a good job letting you become familiar and comfortable with MATLAB. The book isn't as helpful in my advanced Controls classes, but I still refer back to it when I need a refresher on something.

I recommend this book for anyone who is a beginner in control design. this is a very good book. well written

I am not looking for the Truth, I am looking resources and direction. I have not finished the book, but I can tell you the author, as far as I have seen, does a good job presenting the materials. To use a gardener's metaphor, he does a great job of turning over the historical ideas and presenting what he finds.My current quest is to find evidence of any dialog between India and its neighbors and Levant, the area around the Mediterranean. I have been chasing historical and philosophical threads for almost a decade. This book is full of resources and fresh ideas.

A brilliant survey of the connections between East and West – Greece, Egypt, and India – and the Abrahamic faiths, Hinduism, and Buddhism – by the historian Thomas McEvilly.This subject is a hot potato. Few western historians are equipped to discuss it. Most are happy in their comfort zones that clearly segregate East and West whilst ignoring the enormous evidence of philosophical exchange between these cultures.To be sure, historians are okay with accepting the exchange of merchandise between these cultures in ancient times.For instance, around 3500 BC there was maritime trade between Indians who sailed between the Persian Gulf and northwestern coast of India. Mesopotamian sites of 3000 BC have unearthed white Indian conch shells. Around 2500 BC-2000 BC cylinder seals of a Persian type have been found in Mohenjo Daro and Lothal, India that indicate trade between India and Sumer and Babylonia. 2200 BC, Sargon boasted he had Indian ships at his harbor.McEvilly suggests it is inconceivable that two distant peoples could be meeting with each other frequently for commercial reasons but never discussing their traditions, festivals, customs, religions – all of which would have been fascinating subject matter for any two peoples wishing to develop good will and thus better trade relations and profits. Written proof of such philosophical exchange, though it would be ideal, is not a pre-requisite to drawing such a conclusion. You only need a basic understanding of the relationship between business and friendship.Remember, when Indians disembarked from their ships while material was loaded or unloaded, they would possibly be in the foreign land for days or weeks before returning. During this time they would be guests of the host land and introduced to its customs, practices, and beliefs. Reciprocating, the Indians would tell them about things in India. This is not difficult to envisage.Additionally, Sargon was multi-ethnic. He would have pro-actively sought to understand India.McEvilly’s conclusions suggest information flowed from India to Greece in the pre-socratic and then back in the hellenistic era.Published in 2002, this book does not take into account new dating of the very important Rig Veda of India. Throughout his book, McEvilly’s uses the traditional AIT dating of 1500 BC. However, the discovery of the dried up Sarasvati River and its dating of at least 1900 BC [according to geological and palaeoenvironmental studies (Rao 1991: 77-9; Allchins 1997: 117)] has wide implications concerning the origin of philosophical ideas found in the Rig Veda and Upanishads. Did some of their ideas arrive from Greece, as McEvilly’s suggests, or were they actually exported from India at an earlier date?Also, McEvilly, is unable to supply any concrete dates concerning the origin of ideas in India and explicitly states his regret that India is, as Hegel put it, “ahistorical.” This is not McEvilly’s fault. Philosophy in India was an oral tradition and highly secretive. That is why you do not find written evidence on parchment or stone. That was the tantalizing method and mystery of the ancient yogis. However, geological dating of rivers such as the Sarasvati help us compare with known dates in other cultures.This is a book of the highest academic caliber. A masterpiece and classic. Probably not another book like it in its genre. The culmination of a long career, The Shape of Ancient Thought, is a stunning work. Dr. McEvillery surveys a magnificent sweep of time and space, from ancient Sumer to classical Greece and beyond to their Roman successors, to the India of Harrappa, to Buddha, Mahavira and Nagarjuna.A work of such scope is a long and difficult read to be sure. Dr. McEvillery does not pronounce upon the truth or falsehood of any of the schools and movement he outlines. He does not say for sure what the historical influences were. There are places, such as when he traces out the changing evaluation of Indian thought by Indian scholars, where he does not even say what the right perspective on things ought to be. He hints, he suggests, he supposes. All of which conspire to make an already difficult subject even more challenging.And yet Dr. McEvillery has a deft touch. He is able to explain abstruse thoughts succinctly. His hints and suggestions are electric; and his "but maybe"s are sobering. All in all the effect, on this reader at least, is to provoke nuanced reflection on his material. It produced in me a feeling of familiarity with the subject as if it were I and not he that had spent decades on research.In short this is a difficult work but one well worth reading and re-reading especially if one is willing bring one's own philosophical and religious questions to it.

What a great book. Its arguments reveal much about the real history of early western thought and it calls for a paradigm shift in how important aspects of intellectual and spiritual history must be viewed. Aside from the wealth of fascinating comparative analysis it offers, it lays bare our deeply rooted prejudices. This book sheds a great light on some key currents of human thought and culture.

Thomas McEvilley has spent the better part of a very full and fruitful lifetime developing and nurturing the ideas that are so beautifully presented in this amazing book. Trained as a Greek philologist, Dr. McEvilley (that's what I always called him when he was one of my favorite professors as an undergraduate at Rice University) is steeped in the roots of ancient Greek philosophy. He has also deeply imbibed from the ancient philosophical traditions of India. The Shape of Ancient Thought traces in exquisite detail the intricate cross-fertilizations of ancient Greek and ancient Indian philosophical schools of thought. The case is persuasively made that there were surprising and undeniable influences flowing in both directions at different times. Dr. McEvilley is perhaps the only scholar alive today competent enough and talented enough to present these insights. Without a doubt, The Shape of Ancient Thought is one of the most important and interesting books ever written. A pure joy and delight to read, with copious footnotes, to boot!
