I have read the first three books in the series, and it was different than I expected. I definitely liked the movie more, because with these books, I missed the loving Grandma-type character. That was kind of the whole point of the movie, and in the book Grandmere is a monster, so I was surprised in a not-so-good way. But once you get over that, you can enjoy the novels better. After the third one, though, I decided I had better put them down, because I'm only 13, and in all of them, there inappropriate mentionings of things I don't really want to hear it. Also, Lilly Moscovitz is just kind of annoying because she's not nice at all, not the slightest bit, just kind of a bully. But I did like Helen Thermopolis and Mr. G, and Michael Moscovitz especially. If you were expecting the movie, brace yourself for something different, but if you weren't just enjoy.

Meg Cabot's 'The Princess Diaries' seems somewhat fantastical. The idea that a young girl can find out she is heir to the throne of a small country and its fortune is not something that happens everyday. Yet Cabot writes in a realistic and appealing way, showing that Mia Thermopolis, despite being anything but the picture of a princess, can adapt like the best of them - even if it's under duress. When Mia's father shares that he can no longer have children and then reveals his princely status, Mia is floored. She doesn't understand how there is any way that she has royal blood in her. It becomes increasingly evident that it's all the truth when Mia's grandmother, the dowager princess and present leader of Genovia, comes to town to give Mia "princess lessons."Concerned that her newfound royal status will ruin her longtime friendship with best friend Lilly, Mia avoids telling her about it. When word leaks anyway, she is a found in a mess, dealing with paparazzi, mean girls turned nice, and the interest of popular boy Josh Richter, whom Mia has been interested in for as long as she can remember. Lilly's brother, Michael, also plays into the revelation, talking to Mia even when she and Lilly are on the outs. Add in that Mia's mom is dating her algebra teacher, Mr. Gianini, plus the fact that she's flunking algebra and realizing that everything isn't what always meets the eye, and Cabot has set up the equation for a disastrous but salvageable first couple months of school. Mia just has to see herself for who she truly is and how she can use that to her advantage.Even though it was a big part of the book to have Mia flunking algebra and trying to save her grade through after-school study sessions with Mr. Gianini and Lilly's brother, Michael, the algebra equations throughout the book (which were supposed to be part of Mia's journal) were somewhat distracting. The book would have worked well without them. Otherwise, the story moved along nicely and set up Mia for a fascinating first couple months of freshman year of high school.Beth Rodgers, Author of 'Freshman Fourteen,' A Young Adult Novel

Nothing will ever be the same for Mia Thermopolis. Her biggest problems in life are failing Algebra and her mom dating her Algebra teacher. And then her father drops a bomb on her. He’s the Prince of Genovia, a small European principality. That makes Mia a princess and, since her father cannot have any more children, she will one day rule Genovia. Suddenly her life includes princess lessons from her not very pleasant to be around Grandmere, trying to hide the whole princess thing from the kids at school, and a big fight with her best friend Lilly along with lots of extra Algebra practice. When word gets out that Mia is a princess she is afraid her worst fears will be realized. The Princess Diaries is told through diary entries written by Mia. While these entries are usually interesting, they are often very repetitive. While this is probably very accurate for a 14 year old girl’s diary, it gets a bit boring to read the same thing over and over. Discovering you are a princess is probably every little girl’s dream so the story is very relatable. I recommend this book for middle and high school kids.

Good advice and tips for sights to see and for where to stay. Has lodging and restaurants that fit my budget. Reminds me of my Peace Corps days as I recognize some of the hotels.

Standard Lonely Planet guide book, but it certainly met and exceeded my needs. Has ample restaurants, lodging, and activities. I personally think Lonely PLanet is apt to young travelers on a budget who are looking to maximize their trip. If this is you, then this is your book. I personally think DK Eyewitness (a recent favortie of mine), Frommers, and Rick Steve's are all directed at older, more affluent travelers.

I have the lonely planet Spain and Chile books as well, and I wouldn't go without one. The Honduras one was no exception. We relied on it heavily during our travels. To give you an idea, my boyfriend and I went on a three week vacation there and though we knew where we wanted to go before we left (and we sorta had a plan for the order) we didn't even know where we were going to stay our first night there. Our flight landed around noon, took a taxi to the bus station, took a 6 hour bus ride to Copan Ruinas, and then looked for a hostel there. We stayed there for 3 nights and then moved again. Every time we were going to change city, the night before we'd look in this guide to see how to go about getting to our next destination, and every bus ride on the way there we'd look in here to see about what hostel we'd want to try to stay at. This book allowed us to just go with the flow and plan our trip as we went. It even got us into Guatemala without problems. With the use of this book, while on a bus to Guatemala, we realized that the boarder's visa office would be closed by the time we got there (so us Americans wouldn't be able to get through) so we ended up getting off the bus and staying in a beach town a few miles from the boarder and continuing the next day.If I hear of a good place to stay by word of mouth, great. But if not I'd rather go with a cool hostel recommended in one of the Lonely Planet books. I've stayed in too many bad places to trust my luck without it.Final note, I'd recommend Honduras over Guatemala. Honduras had less tourists so the locals are much nicer overall (in Guatemala we had to be on our guard) and Honduras has many of the same types of adventures. I'm not sure if there are volcanos in Honduras though.

I was wary about buying this book after reading the negative review. I was also getting nervous about my trip to Honduras, because all the websites have really expensive hotels, more than $100 US. Thank goodness for Lonely Planet because I can now enjoy a trip that I can afford. It's got just what I need, plenty of places to stay, eat and visit, all for much less than online. I guess that the places in Honduras that can afford websites charge an arm and a leg. I'm all about budget travel, and this book is the perfect companion. And it's slim, so it won't take up much valuable backpacking space. In response to the earlier review, as a student on a budget, I'm not too concerned that the history may be inaccurate. I'm going to Honduras to have a good, and inexpensive time. This book has saved me tons of money and let me relax and have a good time. Thanks Lonely Planet.

Great tips ~ was helpful for our cruise!

Good condition, lots of useful information. It is very Important to check the year it was published before purchasing. Although still very helpful and accurate despite being 7/8 years old.

I have used Lonely Planet books for years. They always give great information, and they please very different travelers - from rich to poor, students, retirees, families....etc. They tell you what's most practical and important for safety. They give very different options in terms of eating, sleeping and seeing sites. The maps and travel information help a lot!

My trip is next month and this book seems to have it all, I feel comfortable having it :) I am excited to start my backpacking excursion, and will know how accurate the book is once I get there. It helped me plan different stops and routes...

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's informative, funny and very easy to read. I learned a lot about Taiwan, its complex history, customs and what it's like to be an American expat living in that country.I loved the section about food and the author's willingness to try different kinds of food which may not always appeal to American tastes.Taiwanese traditions such as the selling and brewing of tea, ghost month, the lunar calendar and other traditions are explained. There is a chapter on Disability in Taiwan which would be very helpful to anyone who wants to travel and has mobility issues. The author needs to use a wheelchair most of the time but it has not kept him from doing a lot of sightseeing in the country. There are lots of tips on how to adjust to this particular culture and it seems that the author and his family have done that very well.I hope there is a sequel to this book. I'd be interested in how the author's teen-age daughters adjusted to living in a different country and how they perceive Taiwanese teen-agers.

The author is surely a nice person but this book is poorly written and repetitive. I don't recommend it to you.

Love these Moon travel guides. This is our 3rd one. (Fiji, Ireland, Puerto Rico)As a former travel agent, I feel like this books fit my personal travel style over some of the other publications. They cover lots of things, not just high end places to stay and eat. Also, we had a really tough time finding a detailed map while in Puerto Rico and the one's in the book were a great help.Would recommend this boook because of all the help it gave us while in Purto Rico.

We went to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon, and the Moon guide is superb. We chose to spend almost all our time in the jungle, beaches, and mountains, with only 1 day in San Juan. This book told us of things known mostly to locals: a wonderful natural waterslide near Luquillo, that we should eat at the Luquillo Kiosks, how to find the best bioluminescent bay experience, and a roadside stand that sells scrumptious sangria. (Don't miss the jungle zipline, too.) This book took us many places where we found ourselves surrounded by native Puerto Ricans enjoying their beautiful island. If you're planning your own way and won't be spending the entire time on a resort, this book is a great guide.

We just came back from PR yesterday and I must say the book was a wonderful guide during our vacation there. My husband spent much of his childhood in PR and at first he told me the book was unnecessary but he was the one who kept asking me to refer to the book. We spent two weeks in PR but we didn't follow the route written in the book...we went the opposite direction. We did make a complete circle of the Island using this book as our guide. The location of places were exactly as written in the book. We stayed at three different hotels in three different locations that are listed in the book and the phone number, the location and the review about the hotels were dead on. Last time we went to PR for family emergency, we stopped by to eat at a restaurant called La Boca in Salinas but this time we couldn't remember how we got there. We called family and friends and we were driving in circle. I told my husband that in the book most of the restaurants the writer reccomands are on the same road so we took 701 and there was our restaurant....the restaurant is not listed in the book but we love the seafood there. I wish I was eating the crab mofongo and a whole red snapper as we watch the fish swiming in the water. The information about getting to the port early to catch a ferry to Culebra island was true because it was sold out by the time we got there at 8am on Saturday. Better luck next time.

This helped us a lot for planning our trip and we carried it with us as well. Good advice on all fronts. We did notice that other people had the same book so it isn't just us using this one.

This book turned out to be quite an asset in Puerto Rico. It gave great recommendations for restaurants and sites. It is especially helpful if you do not stay in San Juan. It covers the whole island. I only gave 4 stars because some of the info was outdated and a few things were understated in our area. By the time we realized this, it was too late to take advantage of them.

We found his helpful in choosing places to visit in Puerto Rico. There is so much to do and see -- more than can be done in a single weeklong visit. We will be back!

this is not an ideal guide, insuffice info, map , transportation etc...

This book doesn't have quite as much detail as the Rough Guide or Fodors, but for the average traveler, it's pretty darn good. It may not give you all the history or other details of a place but it will tell you enough highlights so that you can make up your mind about what you want to see and it will give you a few suggestions for the best (and best deals) on restaurants and hotels in each place as well. If you're someone who wants to know all the details, go for Rough Guide or Fodors. But if your the average traveler, and especially if you plan to spend most of your days in San Juan or at some other beach and you just want enough info to take a few day trips, the Moon book will be likely become your favorite.

I really liked this book. I often have the problem of knowing what's going to happen in a story long before it is actually revealed. This book kept me guessing, and although I was a little bit ahead of the story, it was not as much as I am with most. I also enjoyed the settings and time frame - a vast mansion, a dilapidated strange house, and the cozy bookstore.

So here's my problem with gothic literature: it's so habitually grotesque that it's predictable. If there's not incest, there's a crazy wife in the attic. If there's not a crazy wife in the attic, there's a murderous illegitimate son who's not right in the head. Or conjoined twins. Or a dying gypsy's curse. Or something equally unsettling. So even if you guess the HEP Big Secret wrong, whatever it actually is isn't going to make a dent. B/c you've already imaged the worst. B/c gothic.ALSO . . . I don't like it.If I lived in the time of traveling freak shows, I would not attend. Not my bag. You: So why did you read it?Me: B/c didn't realize it was gothic until I'd already started it.You: Why didn't you quit?Me: SCHADENFREUDE . #thestruggleisrealPlus, the concept is friggin amazing: England's most beloved author, who's written 56 novels in 56 years, has zealously guarded her privacy. She made her pen name her legal name, and has threatened any would-be biographers with lawsuits until they backed down.Interviewing her has become a kind of rite of passage for journalists, b/c she gives a different version of her life story to every, single one of them. <------how cool is that? But now she's dying, so she contacts our MC (Margaret), an amateur biographer who's grown up in her father's rare bookshop (a bibliophile's DREAM), and employs Margaret to write her life story before she leaves this mortal coil. After that is when it gets weird. And gross. And creepy. And messed-the-eff-up.Man alive, these people are CRAZY.Including Margaret, who has an unhealthy fixation on her dead-shortly-after-birth twin sister.Genre preferences aside, there's no denying that this is a beautifully written book:There is something about words. In expert hands, manipulated deftly, they take you prisoner. Wind themselves around your limbs like spider silk, and when you are so enthralled you cannot move, they pierce your skin, enter your blood, numb your thoughts. Inside you they work their magic. It's also mindbendingly clever. The line between mental illness and the supernatural is so thin, so frail, so indecipherable, that even now, days later, I can't stop thinking about it--were the ghosts real, or did they only exist in her mind?I. DON'T. KNOW. *EDVARD MUNCH FACE*THE THIRTEENTH TALE by Diane Setterfield is not a book you read then forget. It stays with you, taking up brain space, whispering incessantly, like the five notes of a song you can't place, but can't escape. It's beautiful and terrible. And even if you avoid gothic novels like I do, this one . . . This one deserves to be made an exception. Highly recommended (with trepidation).

Very few books hold on to me like The Thirteenth Tale did. Even when I was away for the day it was in my thoughts. I was puzzling it through or wondering what would happen to one or more of the characters. I knew all their names and felt compassion, concern or even dislike for some of them. I cannot even tell you the name of the book I started yesterday....which also tells you where it will end up (unread book section of my kindle).Diane Setterfield has done an amazing job of weaving several tales of love, heartache, loneliness and dedication together in a way I have never seen before. I am now a fan of hers and will be looking for more like this one.

Last night I finished the best book I've read in ages, and then I stayed awake for hours, marveling at the use of language, and how she managed the most surprising plot twist I've ever encountered AND managed to tie up all the lose ends. It was amazing. Her writing reminds me of Daphne du Maurier with hints of Harper Lee. A wonderful combination of two of my favorite authors. I rarely reread books, but this was so amazing that I want to go back and read it again, very soon, just to see it all through the perspective of knowing the ending. Highly recommended.

It's been a long time since I have read such a novel. From the beginning, words flow as bubbly brooks. I was captured from the first and you will be also. This author, Diane Setterfield, has written in a style that will not only grab your attention, it will keep you reading until you cannot read any longer - as soon as I got up in the morning, I had to continue.I smiled, held my breath, became puzzled, thought I'd figured out where the story was heading, and received a shock when the curveball came - over and over again.Enjoy! I will definitely recommend to each person who asks me if I have read anything good lately!

Wow. What to love the most? The setting? The characters? That gorgeous, luscious writing? This is my favorite book of the year, hands down. It's an intriguing story. the author draws you in slowly, wrapping the tentacles of the story around you like a cocoon until you are trapped. The only way to escape is to finish the book. And what a book it is! I could go on about it forever. The scandal, the secrets, and the slow unfolding of the mystery is so delicious, I want to read it again and again. This is definitely going on my "To Read Again" list because one time around is simply not enough for me.If you've never read The Thirteenth Tale, I highly recommend doing so. It's brilliant. I loved the twists and turns and the way everything unfolded. Plus, the writing is simply beautiful. It romanticizes reading, writing, and storytelling. It's fabulous.Content: Some violence and implied sex, but overall, it was pretty clean.

This is a short review. If you like literate and engrossing mysteries with a gothic twist you will love this book. Obviously the 19th century novels of Bronte and Collins has inspired this writer to pen a novel which fits very well into that period of literature - unsettleing and dark but not depressing. At the outset the narrator says she likes a novel with a beginning, a middle, and end and that is what you get and one that will keep you guessing as to where the story is going. When the mystery is resolved you are surprised but you realize that the author has played fair and the clues were there if you were just clever enough to figure it out. Also at the very end she keeps her word there are no loose ends all is revealed even the future of Shadow, the cat, is resoved in a most satisfying way (no animals were harmed in the writting of this novel, well, except for a random chicken or two).

I'm going to expand this review shortly, but having just finished it couldn't wait to say how it broke the intellectual block I've had in deciding between realism and operationalism for about forty years now. I'm not giving you much to go on, I know, but "philosophers", philosophy majors, and history of science specialists should get a lot out of this book. I'm impressed. No wonder it's gotten a good review on Amazon and recently (my cause of buying it) in "Science".HERE'S THE EXPANSIONWhen I was a boy, we were basking in the afterglow of phenomenalism. It was still perfectly respectable to adhere to the likes of Bergmann, Russell, Mach and Freddie Ayer. In fact, I'm not far from there now. Kuhns became the flavor of the day, with a lot of staying power. That has resulted in some pretty outlandish claims about the relativity of science (by which I will always mean physics). And Karl Popper, of course, one of my favorites. But infusing the whole atmosphere of the late 20th century -in physics and philosophy - a kind of hard core realism became more and more acceptable. I don't know why, maybe the computer facilitating a materialist theory of mind. This took place as physics became less and less imaginable, as Berkeley would say. Indeed, today we are treated to twice yearly books by physicists themselves waxing philosophical and questioning the correspondence of their theories with reality. Baggott, the most widely read, is but one.Chang give reading suggestions at the beginning of this book. For a quick go thru, either just to get to the philosophy part or to make it easier, he suggests a reader may skip the latter part of the first three History of the Chemical Revolution chapters. I didn't. They were quite interesting. Idiosyncratically, for me, I deal with older terminology in some of my restoration work and I actually found it enlightening in that respect.I can only hint at the philosophy of science aspect. You really should read it. "Reality" is defined as that which is resistant to our will. Science is the exploration of that realm. There are many procedures we can use to launch investigations, at any one time they may seem contradictory, but Chang's point is they can all be "valid" within their own definitional scheme and some, even the losers may contain insights the winners do not. "Theory" is - thank God - a term that is shunned in the book. The upshot is a kind of pragmatism and multitude approach which avoids the kind of glib relativism often associated with such a view. By the end of the book, I felt some one had washed my brain. Is water H2O? I don't want to get to much into it, but it always seemed to me that's a very simplistic way of thinking, this book shows why. "Atom" and like words are often tossed out like the y belong to the group "kings and ships and sealing wax": they do not. Read this book.I keep bees. In another 65 million years when our descendants are living in damp borrows, the descendents of bees may be writing physics books. The sensory apparatus of a bee is really, really different from ours (what it's like to be a bee is an order of magnitude harder than what it is like to be a bat). Bee physics may be untranslatable into homininspeak for all I know. It may not even be "object-based" as ours is, to start with. But bee physics will be just as valid as our own, just as good as physics. Read this book. The fifth chapter may be off putting to some readers, and I feel it is the weakest part of the book. One because it's unlikely that philosophical suggestions from outside will alter the course of physics and two because some of Chang's suggestions for introducing alternative type programs into the school curriculum may easily be misunderstood.Regarding the PRICE controversy: the paperback was 60+. There are plenty philosophy and other books I wouldn't buy at this price out of principle (the Cambridge Ancient Histories are 200-300+!). This one, $65, a bargain.P.S., there's a cartoon in this weeks New Yorker ( Oct. 3, 2014) which could serve as a frontis for the second edition. Two guys in lab coats standing in the CERN and one says, "when you've got an accelerator, everything looks like a particle."

I have read widely in the history and philosophy of science (HPS), but, for me, it always came down to Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos, and Feyerabend... until I read this book, which I consider the most original and insightful HPS book written in the past forty years. If you're not interested in reading yet another history of chemistry, albeit a very interesting and original one, then you should fast forward to chapter 5: "Pluralism in Science: A Call to Action," wherein Hasok Chang makes his cogent and persuasive argument.

At $120 I know that I tried not to buy it, but I read his Temperature book and figured this would be pretty good. The electronic copy at the library was poor, image rather than character-based, and only available a page at a time. The sample I read on my Kindle was excellent and seemed important, so it concerns me that people will not read it because of the price.I enjoyed learning so much about the history of chemistry. Prof. Chang makes a compelling argument that it is important to learn about the details and make independent judgments rather than believe everything wrapped in a scientific wrapper. It is technical and challenging to read, but he seemed to make a consistent effort to be approachable and not write over my head. It is well-researched and documented. A nice piece of work and I hope he receives the academic credit he deserves. The questions he raises are important for society to consider and to motivate people to investigate further, especially students. Ever since we invented tools there has been a question about technology. Simplicity and a broad reach are not necessarily consistent with current knowledge. Ultimately truth and beauty may be united, but do not progress together. It may be a matter of perspective, so it is personal. This seems counter-intuitive to the nature of science and mathematics which are heralded for the universality and independence. These ideas are difficult to discuss without turning into a mush pie and Chang’s books by using specific examples raise narrow and broad questions which are important and worth your time.

Best book in several years

Is Water H2O? is a really fun book for newbies and professionals alike in the defense of Scientific Pluralism. It has a very easy-to-read format, where each chapter details a new argument with subsections generally devoted to 1. a history lesson on chemistry appropriate for all readers, 2. a philosophical position on scientific pluralism, and 3. a response to common or anticipated objections. This makes it both an in-depth account of Chang's thoughts on science and a good book to lend around or chat about with friends. While I personally enjoyed it, Chang shares a rather cheeky writing style with Feyerabend especially when going over the science history, so your milage may vary.

This got a great review in Science, but unless Springer knocks the price for the Kindle edition down to about $10, I'm not buying.....
