The book itself is incredible. I absolutely adored the stories in it, the poems & i loved the inserts & enclosures. They made the book so special, the one flaw was that my purchase was a used item cause they don't produce this book anymore. It was missing one insert, i shouldn't be complaining about that but still. it would've been great to have all of the inserts. Just missing one. But all in all, this book is nothing less than incredible. The enclosures make it feel like you're holding original copies of Pac's work. Amazing. Rest In Peace to The Greatest Of All Time. Tupac Amaru Shakur. Very happy with this purchase

Its so awesome ! One of the best books I've ever purchased .. So amazing , reading it .. Looking thru those images , hand written notes and pictures representing each word and described Pacs life to the fullest !!

I actually purchased this for a friend and after seeing its detail and presentation (along with the CD) I wanted to keep it for myself. I love this keepsake. I love my friend more so I'm giving it up. It's definitely worth the purchase. Thanks Amazon for having it available.

I have alot of 2Pac Shakur books and I'm also a very huge fan but this book speak volumes! They did an awesome job putting this book together, it was surreal.

My son was doing a project for black history month. This book is excellent with copies of pictures and songs on napkins etc. It really is a great book. I learned so much from this book and was more appreciative of what Tupac meant to our society.

Amazing book, probably one of the best I have seen! The condition surpassed expectations based on the description. If you don't have this book. Get it!

This book is AMAZING! I bought a “Like New” copy from Bozemanbabycompany and it arrived in pristine condition with all inserts intact and also in pristine condition. I couldn’t be more pleased!

Upon delivery the product was missing the 60 minute interview CD. This was a gift and it was embarrassing to give this as a gift with items missing.

St. Catherine of Siena’s (1347-80) The Dialogue was composed as a continuous narrative (later divided up into chapters) with “the regular pattern of petition, response, thanksgiving that characterizes the flow of the work” (Introduction, p. 15). This is a difficult read (even in this very accessible translation), one not meant to be plowed through in the manner I read it, but to be ruminated over slowly in the manner of lectio divina. The Dialogue includes passages on the importance of prayer and the image of Christ as a bridge. At the very outset of the book, St. Catherine, following St. Paul (1 Thess 5:17), advocates for continual, humble prayer (p. 25). She gives additional attention to this idea of humility in prayer later in the book, where God says, “Then she receives my visitation humbly, saying, ‘Behold your servant: Let your will be done in me.’ Then she emerges from the course of prayer and my spiritual visitation with spiritual gladness and joy, in humility considering herself unworthy…” (pp. 133-4). St. Catherine gives special importance to mental prayer, not that “one should abandon vocal prayer, since it seems not everyone is drawn to mental prayer…” (p. 124). Rather, one should, even in vocal prayer, endeavor “to concentrate on my love, pondering at the same time her own sins and the blood of my only-begotten Son” (p. 124). The target of this love is, of course, Jesus, whom St. Catherine gives various appellations, including Bridge (p. 59ff.), Vine (p. 61), Boat (p. 70), and Servant (p. 76). The Bridge image is one that she returns to many times. Christ is the bridge between our humanity and the Godhead. This is another way of referring to the Incarnation, but St. Catherine also uses the image to indicate a path to unity with God: the three steps of (1) desire without selfish love, (2) enlightenment of the mind, and (3) peace and quiet (pp. 65, 108).On of the ideas that really struck me was St. Catherine’s exhortation to focus on your neighbors’ needs and on your sins, but not on your neighbors’ sins (p. 300). How often do we look to find fault in others rather than, in all humility, examine our own sinfulness! “But I gave you your ears to listen to my word and pay heed to your neighbor’s needs” (p. 300). We perversely gravitate towards condemning others instead of reaching out to help our brothers and sisters in charity and humility. This is contrary to the Gospel, and yet so many of us who identify ourselves as Christians find judgment easier than love. This long, often meandering, book occasionally felt like a penance to read! St. Catherine’s exaltation of the spiritual over the physical (soul good; body bad) seemed a little too much like Gnosticism at times. And her exhortations not to engage civil law in matters involving wrongdoing by church ministers (p. 229) doesn’t resonate today in a post-scandal Church. But St. Catherine otherwise gives us much food for contemplation in lectio divina, including the importance of personal humility, the need to pray constantly, and the call to service.

Fantastic book. My mom bought a cheaper version from a different publisher and totally regretted it. Hers was completely unformatted. This one is broken into chapters, spaced like a normal book and has paragraphs and the font is a readable size. Mom's cheaper book, also sold on Amazon, not so much. Definitely get this one. It's soooooo chock full of completely mind blowing explanations of deep theology that you'll want to go slow, just to absorb it, but it's fascinating enough that you might not want to put it down.

Saint Catherine of Siena was a third order Dominican in fourteenth-century Tuscany. As a young adult, she devoted herself to prayer, fasting, and mortifications. After this period of solitude, with its accompanying ecstatic visions, she went out into the world to care for the sick and the poor. Catherine also worked to bring peace and unity in the Church and among Christians. She was canonized by Pope Pius II and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. St. Catherine gives us one of the great literary treasures of the Church, called “The Dialogue.” It was for this work and her letters, Saint Catherine was named Doctor.Saint Catherine’s insights are pertinent to today’s Church, especially in the Spiritual Life. For instance, she instructs us on:—specific stages in the Spiritual Life.—the notion of “mystical marriage” and what it means.—how our journey in the Spiritual Life reflects Jesus on the Cross.—how to overcome “selfish sensuality” by hatred of sin and growth in virtue.—that trials, temptations, and sufferings can be transformed into positive things.—how “filial love” and love of God eventually leads to “spousal love.”—and, much more, even the four distinct punishments experienced by those in Hell! These are all found in The Dialogue, which takes the form of actual conversations between God and Saint Catherine, and comes to us in four separate exchanges. Briefly, there is a “Treatise on Divine Providence” in which is explained the connection between love and suffering, emphasizing that God wants only our love and the service we give to our neighbors. The “Treatise on Discretion” introduces the metaphor of “The Bridge” between our fallen world and heaven, which is Jesus—similar to seeing Jesus as “The Way!” The “Treatise on Prayer” gives instructions for the progress from vocal to mental prayer, and describes the higher degrees of prayer. The “Treatise on Obedience” covers the necessity and rewards of obedience. As with the writing of other Doctors and spiritual writers in this series, this is a message that comprises: taking our own steps towards spiritual perfection, whereby God wants to bring us to sanctity and salvation. This is a message completely true to Sacred Scripture. This profound teaching is a gift to guide the reader to apply these extraordinary ideas and teachings to his or her own life that they might arrive at the same benefit and spiritual growth envisioned by the Saint.Highly recommended!

My apologizes, we found out who the thief was regarding the loss of the book; our dog.... Want to make this right and let you know we have the book and unfortunately, it is chewed up because of our new dog.

It does not have the Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat. The words flowed like silk for me when I read it. I believe it is unabridged or none of the chapters are missing. This is God the Father talking directly to St. Catherine while she is in a state of ecstasy and supposedly the words in this book are what her secretaries wrote down. Profound amount of knowledge in here. Example: Humility is the foster mother and nurse of charity while patience is the heart of charity/divine love.

The Labyrinth of the Spirits: A Novel (Cemetery of Forgotten Books)

Review

“A colossal achievement…a genre-crossing delight… Publishers dream of novels that appeal to habitual readers and to those seeking one big book to last a holiday, and that is what Zafon’s quartet has delivered. His trick is to have linked multiple genres – fantasy, historical, romance, meta-fictional, police-procedural and political – through prose of atmospheric specificity.”   (The Guardian)“Carlos Ruiz Zafon is a gifted storyteller who knows how to capture his readers’ attention. Packed with suspense, The Labyrinth of the Spirits is a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller. As you read this chilling thriller, you feel as if your pounding heart is missing a beat.” (Washington Book Review)“Intricate and sublime.” (O: The Oprah Magazine, 15 Favorite Books of 2018)“A mystery, a love letter to books, and a magical adventure all wrapped up in one, this book is a masterful work of literature that will invigorate your love of reading.”           (Bustle)“A gripping and moving thriller set in Franco’s Spain that’s fully accessible to newcomers.…29-year-old Alicia Gris, a capable, insightful operative working for the Spanish secret police…will remind readers of Lisbeth Salander… Fans of complex and literate mysteries featuring detectives with integrity working under oppressive and corrupt regimes will be well satisfied.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)“Ruiz Zafón clearly has had a great deal of fun in pulling this vast story together…His ability to keep track of a thousand threads while, in the end, celebrating the power of storytelling is admirable…. A satisfying conclusion to a grand epic that, of course, will only leave its fans wanting more.”                                                                                            (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)“A compelling, multi-faceted, and haunting work of art told by a master storyteller. To say that the writing is brilliant is an understatement. Carlos Ruiz Zafón respects every word, taking his time to develop and do justice to the major, minor, and irrelevant characters, places, things, or situations in order to recreate a dark time in Spain’s history and ensure that the reader not only bears witness to it but is immersed in it and feels it…An epic novel that is also an ode to writing and to the undying thirst for knowledge through reading.” (Historical Novel Society)“Gothic, operatic, and in many ways old-fashioned, this is a story about storytelling and survival, with the horrors of Francoist Spain present on every page. Compelling…this is for readers who savor each word and scene, soaking in the ambience of Barcelona, Zafón’s greatest character (after, perhaps, the irrepressible Fermín Romero de Torres).” (Booklist)“It is a bittersweet return to Barcelona for fans of Zafón, as he concludes his internationally beloved, labyrinthine Cemetery of Forgotten Books series (The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game, The Prisoner of Heaven) with an operatic finale, drawing together all the threads as a rare book unveils a conspiracy that runs through Spanish history.”  “The  plot  is  exquisitely intricate, like an elaborate steampunk  timepiece.  Alicia, a fragile but ferociously formidable, vampire-like seductress,  is  unforgettable. The pacing is exceptional, with its incessant, rolling waves of tension. Even the dialogue is remarkably     sharp  and  fresh…The Labyrinth of the Spirits is a masterpiece…Readers’ one regret will be  that  Labyrinth is  the  last  in  this ingenious cycle.”            (BookPage)“THE LABYRINTH OF THE SPIRITS is the sublime culmination to a truly outstanding series. Set in Barcelona from 1938 through the 1970s, these books deftly combine the world of bookselling, the long shadow of the Spanish Civil War, gothic literary interplay, wonderfully salty characters, sublime dialogue and verbal sparring, along with elaborate and satisfying exposition. Taken together or individually they represent a reading experience not to be missed…reading Labyrinth first would have given a sublime insight into any of the other books…As long as you actually open a door to the labyrinth and enter it, all is well. As to not reading the Cemetery of Forgotten books at all, that is obviously a grave error.” (PW ShelfTalker)

If you adored Shadow of the Wind, this novel will not disappoint. If you're new to the series, welcome. I'm jealous of the first time reading experience you're about to have. One of the wonderful things about these books (this is the 4th and supposedly final) is that they can be read in any order and while they're all standalone stories, each adds a layer of context and insight into the others. It is truly a labyrinth of storytelling and masterfully done. Having said that, knowing the first three books added to my experience reading The Labyrinth of the Spirits. It's not mandatory to begin with The Shadow of the Wind, but I would recommend it.Atmosphere abounds in this genre-defying book. I felt like I was right there with the characters, twisting through the streets of Barcelona, hiding in the shadows, breathing in gunpowder, living off of caffeine and adrenaline, and pushing through too-little sleep to uncover the next piece of the puzzle. The Semperes and Fermin Romero de Torres return, as do other friends and enemies from the previous books, but the main protagonist in this story is Alicia Gris, a bold and alluring woman assigned to investigate a missing person (a returning character who I'll let you discover). The pacing is fantastic. It starts with short snippets into various POVs and story lines as a sort of appetizer before slowly building on the main mystery of the book. You gradually uncover more as the plot builds and you delve deeper into the heart of the city and characters. About halfway through the pieces begin to fall together with increasing speed and for the next 200 pages or so it's non-stop, unputdownable thrills. Yes, there are a few twists, one of which actually made me close my book in disbelief for several minutes before I felt capable of continuing. Nothing felt contrived. Everything felt fitting. I didn't feel cheated or misled. The pace slows down again at the end of the book to ease you back to normal and fill in the gaps. In the end you also get quite a bit of insight into what Ruiz Zafon values in the craftsmanship of writing, which is woven in along with acknowledgments of sorts in a clever way that not everyone may not love, but I quite enjoyed. It is one satisfying, gorgeous read.Like the other books in the series this installment is a wonderful mix of genres: mystery, historical fiction, police procedural, political thriller, romance, fantasy... If you're looking for a fun, light mystery this isn't for you. It's over 800 pages, with multiple characters and sub-plots to keep track of, and, while not gratuitous, it has some torture and squeamish bits to make you uncomfortable if you're highly sensitive. However, if you enjoy modern Gothic tales dripping with atmosphere or detailed mysteries with complex histories to sink your teeth into, this book is fantastic. The series is truly a gift to book lovers, not only for its gorgeous storytelling and compelling characters, but also because it's a series about books, featuring the most fantastic library imaginable, a charming bookstore, lovable booksellers, mysterious authors, the process of writing, the magic of storytelling, and the powerful, undeniable hold that a treasured book can have on a reader.I was a fan of all previous books, but if readers of the series were disappointed in The Angel's Game or The Prisoner of Heaven, fear not. The Labyrinth of the Spirits is Carlos Ruiz Zafon as his masterful best. Despite its length, the story flew by and every page felt necessary and engaging. I will be returning to this book, and the series, many times in the future. The atmosphere and level of storytelling are unparalleled.

Another great read from my personal favorite author. C.R. Zafon weaves such intricate and addictive stories with a unique aura of suspense I was, for months, eagerly awaiting this latest offering. The world he has created in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and it's characters is just magical. The odd feel in the air of post Spanish Civil War Barcelona makes it feel as if not only are the strangest occurrences possible, they are terrifyingly likely. Zombies, gratuitous violence and blood and guts are crutches for lesser writers. C.R. Will scare and inspire the reader with his masterful storytelling alone. Thank you so.......much Carlos!

Highly recommended, even if you are not a Zafon fan. Just need to love books and reading about them. Liking gothic stories helps.

Ruiz Zafon finished his "Labyrinth" series with a very powerful book. There are multiple story lines that were all somehow connected; and through those we reconnected with many of the characters that we met in earlier books. It is not a book that can be read in one day, and the reader needs to pay attention to the time that each chapter takes place. The history of Spain in the 1930s until the 1950s was sometimes a bit too much, and I found myself skipping over paragraphs for that reason. The end of the book and the series is overall very satisfying. The only character that remained a mystery to me was Alicia; who sometimes came across as overbearing and annoying. I won't describe details because I don't want to give anything away in respect of the ending and twists and turns.Overall, I am sad to say goodbye to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books... Wouldn't we all love to find such a treasure?

Anyone who has read the first three books of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series will welcome this final volume, which ties all the loose threads of the previous books together and brings the story/stories to a fitting conclusion. There's a great deal to admire in the author's writing and imagination, and Ruiz Zafon deserves all the accolades these books have garnered. That said, it might also be pointed out that the book is sometimes long-winded, the pacing frequently seems to imitate that of a motion picture or television series, and occasionally the author's/characters' attempts to sound clever come off as just that -- attempts to sound clever. Nevertheless, the book is immensely worth reading, and the flaws are no more galling here than in works by -- say -- Dickens or Balzac.

This is a great novel, in the vein of the others by this fantastic author. However, it's over the top. Spain is a backward country (autodafes were carried out in the 18th century) but I don't accept that it still carried out middle ages type torture during the 1950s. Alicia is seriously handicapped, wears some kind of hip brace and needs morphine to keep going. Getting her to jump over high garden walls, running in cobbled streets, etc pushes the envelope.

It isn't often that a novel has the power to stay with me for days, even weeks after I put the book down. Perhaps it is because I read the CFB in order, or perhaps because Labyrinth was the best, but I found myself wanting to go back to the beginning of the series, like visiting old, familiar friends. To Google things like "map of Barcelona, 1939"; track down the sparse illustrations to see more of what their authors had created, and to learn more about the Spain of Hemmingway's time and before. There's a part of my mind that doesn't want to believe that these people aren't real, that this isn't a work of fiction, and I suppose that's the best review I can offer. For those who are just starting this book or any in the series, I envy you. Although they all stand alone, my advice is to get all four, start at the beginning. You will be rewarded with some of the greatest storytelling of this age and, like me, will be crestfallen when someday you realize there is no more.

While none of us like to think that our church might not always be a safe place, the reality is that things are happening today that were unheard of years ago. While there are excellent seminars and training sessions to enhance the security of churches, the expense could be a problem for some as well as the ability to attend. This handbook is an excellent reference to help us be aware of things which could be indicators or potential problems. Well worth the cost.

This is not a "How to..." book. It is a succinctly made case for why churches need security and how to get started. The author provides a 3-out alternative to the usual "Run. Hide. Fight." 3-out is similar but less rigid. One of the central themes though is an emphasis on de-escalation as the best outcome with any threat is the escalation and injury that never happened.

Short and to the point, but packed with a lot of helpful information. If you are looking for the basics of where to start in setting up a security program/ministry in your church, this book is a great resource.

Is God a Moral Monster?: Making Sense of the Old Testament God, by Paul Copan

From the Back Cover

Is the God of the Old Testament nothing but a bully, a murderer, and an oppressor? Many today--even within the church--seem to think so. How are Christians to respond to such accusations? And how are we to reconcile the seemingly disconnected natures of God portrayed in the two testaments? In this timely and readable book, apologist Paul Copan takes on some of the most vexing accusations of our time, including:God is arrogant and jealousGod punishes people too harshlyGod is guilty of ethnic cleansingGod oppresses womenGod endorses slaveryChristianity causes violenceCopan not only answers the critics, he also shows how to read both the Old and New Testaments faithfully, seeing an unchanging, righteous, and loving God in both."This is the book I wish I had written myself. It is simply the best book I have read that tackles the many difficulties that the Old Testament presents to thinking and sensitive Christians. Paul Copan writes in such a simple, straightforward way, yet covers enormous issues comprehensively and with reassuring biblical detail and scholarly research."--Christopher J. H. Wright, international director, Langham Partnership International; author of Old Testament Ethics for the People of God"Lucid, lively, and very well informed, this book is the best defense of Old Testament ethics that I have read. A must-read for all preachers and Bible study leaders."--Gordon Wenham, emeritus professor of Old Testament, University of Gloucestershire"The New Atheists have attacked the morality of the Old Testament with a vengeance. In honesty, many Christians will confess that they struggle with what looks like a primitive and barbaric ethic. Paul Copan helps us truly understand the world of the Old Testament and how it relates to us today."--Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College"Copan takes on current New Atheist biblical critics and powerfully addresses virtually every criticism they have raised. I know of no other book like this one, and it should be required reading in college and seminary courses."--J. P. Moreland, distinguished professor of philosophy, Talbot School of Theology; author of The God Question"There's virtually no scholar I'd rather read on these subjects than Paul Copan. This handbook of responses to tough ethical issues is able to both diminish the rhetoric as well as alleviate many concerns."--Gary R. Habermas, distinguished research professor, Liberty University and SeminaryPaul Copan (PhD, Marquette University) is the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida. He is the author or editor of many books, including When God Goes to Starbucks.

This book is not an answer to someone who has doubts, unless you have them read 20+ pages for any given passage, the explanations are far too long.More importantly, most of them do not use scriptural references to defend certain points. A large majority of the authors answers boiled down to "it's much better than the nations surrounding Israel!"The absolute worst aspect of this book was done of the worst "logic" I've read on the subject. In regarding Sodom and Gomorrah, the author asked "Considering they were homosexuals, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?" And another "Considering they sacraficed children to false gods, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?"Both arguments are very poorly thought out and in bad taste. They are very unlikely to convince anyone and far more likely to disgust someone against a Christian. For the first, it's very likely that they were sexually depraved toward all genders, afterall Lot did offer them his daughters, not his sons or son-in-laws. He would not have done this if the city was only known for its homosexuality. For the second, in order to offer child sacrafices, you need to have children... Most likely the rituals were something like offering firstborns, a way to increase fertility. Not every child born. It's arguments like these that make this a very poor choice of you want to help someone see through challenging topics in the old testament.I give this 2 stars because toward the end of the book, the author does have a couple meaningful insights into Israelite slavery issues. But I don't know if it's worth purchasing to get to them.Instead, I highly recommend "The Bible Project" on YouTube or their website. They do a fantastic job of bringing new insight to various themes, topics, and books. Including issues with some of the old testament passages. I can't recommend their work enough.

This is a really good book. Copan does a great job handling the assaults of the New Atheists and working through difficult texts of the Old Testament (including the so-called terror texts). Copan deals with slavery, the Bible's treatment of women, holy war, and several other topics that often give Christians (and atheists!) problems. While I gave the book 5 stars for its basic excellence, there are a number of minor points I would raise questions about had I the time or were I myself a better scholar. I'll just mention two.Copan frequently resorts to the language of exaggeration in his dealing with OT texts. Scripture certainly does use hyperbole in places, but I'm not convinced that it does so as often as Copan suggests. Sometimes this appears to be an argument of convenience.Copan also goes in several directions regarding the Conquest that I felt were sort of weak, such as giving credence to the Infiltration theory of the Conquest. The account in the Bible of the crossing of the Red Sea and of the Jordan, in my view, pretty much vitiates the Infiltration theory. Both speak of sudden mass movements, and Joshua speaks of a sudden overthrow of the Canaanite dominance of the Promised Land. The fact that Canaanites continued to live in Canaan after the Conquest does not change the basic facts. Copan's resort to studying some of the various Hebrew words surrounding Israelite warfare merely opened the possibility for his interpretations (words do, after all, possess a semantic range), but certainly did not demand (or even suggest) his interpretations. Copan seems to acknowledge this in places with several "even if" statements.Anyway, the book is excellent. All the chapters are good; the final chapter is outstanding. Well documented, well argued, this is certainly a book that should find a place on your apologetics shelf.

This is not an argument. It's a very long, very painful and tortured rationalization. God didn't commit genocide because the Bible says God is good and if he DID commit genocide, then the people he did it to deserved it (because reasons) and at that point is it really the bad-thing version of genocide? This is the kind of thinking that makes Christians morally unreliable and sears their consciences until they're willing to vote in an authoritarian fascist if God says it's okay. It is the exact opposite of morality; it's arguing why you don't need to use your own moral compass if God tells you not to, even to the point of murder. A disgusting display of special pleading whose horrible moral impact the author can't possibly have thought through to its logical conclusion. In defending the Bible agains charges of evil, he has made evil a nonexistent consideration, compared to obeying what the literalists claim the Bible teaches. This way lies more genocide.

This book address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on. Copan's writing is clear, lucid, and readable. He has divided up chapters into a handful of pages (thought the font is rather small), so each "question" or "argument" is addressed quickly yet sufficiently. The title of the book, "Is God a Moral Monster?" obviously is a rhetorical question. No, He isn't. But, why do new atheists frame God as such a being? In a nutshell, because they use out-of-context phrases, expressions, and impressions from the Bible. With Copan's further explanation on cultural backgrounds, context of events, and linguistic nuances, readers are able to grasp the deeper and more caring heart of God the Father.I have not finished reading the book, bur the first 9 chapters or so have been satisfying. A good book for those who know the short answer to the question, but who need more detail and, thus, confidence/evidence.

I love all of Greg Ricks's work. Queen and Country being my personal favorite. This was a quick read. A good story but was not great.

Enjoyable.

A+++

I like Greg Rucka's other work. Whiteout, Queen and Country, and Gotham Central, so I was hoping this would be as good as those, but this book was just so ehhh..The main issue I have is the protagonist. Her whole personality is just that she's a woman detective. Almost every bit of conflict the character faces is because she is a woman, and the people she fights are against that. They are sexist or phobic in some area and that's where the conflict comes from. The story needed a villain and a hero so the writer created easy ones. If this was the 1960's I can imagine characters acting the way they do, and the novelty of a female private detective would be more appealing, but its not 1960 it's 2014. Rucka's always had a interest in female heroes, but it's always been incidental to the story, not relied on so heavily. It just seems like a real lazy way to create empathy. The other main issue is that mystery isn't compelling. I wont spoil it, but the motivation for the bad guys and reason the case begins is pretty cliche. Yes the races of the people are different and yes the protagonist is a woman, not a man, but everything else about the story, even the henchmen, feel too typical. Maybe it's my fault for reading too many detective stories, but for whatever reason I was disappointing when I got to the end.I also don't see how Portland was unique to this story or why it mattered that it took place in Portland. It didn't feel any different from any other city. Maybe the names of places in the story are real locations, but it didn't seem any different then gotham central or any book that took place in new york.

Dex Parios is a (bisexual gal) private investigator who's perpetually low on cash. Her relationship with local police is slightly strained. Her younger brother and roommate Ansel, who has Down's Syndrome, is way more popular than she is... probably because unlike his big sister, he doesn't have an attitude and a chip on his shoulder. In this first volume, Dex runs up a debt she can't pay at a casino and the owner gives her a job: find a missing granddaughter. Sounds straightforward, except too many people don't want said granddaughter to be found. And they're willing to mess Dex up to keep her out of it.IMHO, Rucka writes female characters very well. And the first volume of Stumptown is full of double-crossing, threats, secrets, lies, and everything else that makes up a good P.I. story. I liked the second volume even better. The third revolves around a pro sport I know nothing about, and Rucka brings on a new artist, so it didn't click for me as much, but the fourth was back to the Stumptown I know and love. I'm always glad to see the next volume of this series announced.

Author Greg Rucka and artist Matthew Southworth create a pitch perfect tone for this opening story of Stumptown. Rucka does a great job in establishing the main character, Dex, and her supporting cast for an ongoing, if periodic, series. Rucka grew up with the Rockford Files, Magnum PI and Simon & Simon, as well as with a love of the PI genre starting with Hammet and Chandler. This book is his love letter to that genre, and he hits all the right notes, creating a fascinating cast with a fun mystery to start us off. Dex, the main character, is, like most American PIs, flawed, but likeable. A person who is going to do the right thing, even when her personal life may be a disaster, and even when she may have to cut a few corners to do right by her client. The art by Southworth is amazing. His work ethic really shows as he creates a fictional but very believable reality for Stumptown's version of Portland and its environs. The art sets the emotional tone perfectly for this neo-noir book, which is by turns funny, thrilling, and intriguing. I loved it, and if you enjoy a good PI story, you should pick it up.

Greg Rucka's work in comics and in the novel field owes a lot to crime/detective fiction and he makes no bones about it. In his first Stumptown graphic novel, he adds Dex Parios to the canon of fictional detectives that readers of the genre should get to know.As Rucka admits in his afterwords, he was a big fan of The Rockford Files. Dex is modeled on that same ne're do well private eye saddled with family frustrations and burdened with lousy cases that put her in the way of all kinds of danger - including a very lethal crime boss.On the surface, Dex is working off a casino debt by looking for Charlotte Suppa, granddaughter of the casino owner Dex is in debt to. But the case gets lousy with twists and turns as the Portland, Oregon, based private investigator picks up the trail.Dex isn't superhuman (though Rucka is good at writing those too), and she comes with a lot of baggage. Her dimensions on the page aren't heroic either. She's just a young woman trying to find her place in the world, no mad kung fu skills, no superpowers, no figure that's going to turn the heads of fanboys. She's not even overly intelligent. Best I can figure is that Dex's chief claim to success is the fact that she just doesn't give up and sometimes - sometimes - manages to get one step ahead of the bad guys. The opening of the book is awesome, guaranteeing instant attention on part of the reader as Rucka backtracks to show you what's going on and how we got to Dex getting shot and dumped in the sound.Dex has a lot of family and friends, too, but they've got their own problems. Brother Ansel has Down's Syndrome and requires constant attention, but it's that love that Dex has for her sibling that really captures the heart too. Her buddy Gray doesn't quite fill out in this book, so I don't know he is to her except a friend. Detective Darcy is a friend, but the kind that comes with friction and judgment, not an easy friendship to maintain.Matthew Southworth, the artist, is amazing. I love how he uses the pages to bring in the Portland environs and to telescope action. He has a very realistic/cinematic style that captures visual attention and complements the story very well. The story is a classic one that won't throw fans of the genre for long, but it's fun watching Dex work through it. Since Rucka is also a bestselling novelist, Dex would be an easy character to bring into a book, and I'd be happy to read those as well.

I really like the calendar. But it's uppsetting that it was damaged by the tape glued on it :(The bill could have put in the box and not glued on it !!

The BEST calendar we've ever had! Every morning our 6 year old checks the calendar for the animal of the day. It's educational and the art is beautiful. We love ours so much that we easily convinced 12 of our friends to buy a 2018 one, just by showing them our current calendar! We look forward to ordering one for many years to come. Thank you!

We got this calendar last year through the Peppermint Narwhal Kickstarter and we are so glad that they decided to do it again for 2018. This calendar is awesome - the pictures are great and the kids love looking to see which animals we celebrate each day of the year.

creative!
