Not normally drawn to commentaries, the Lord seems to have drawn my attention to this one this year. As a Seminary-educated student of Scripture for over 40 years, I must say that reading this commentary along with the text of John with a good deal of concentration over the past month has been a very rich blessing, much more than I thought it would be. I'm deeply thankful for the author's very evident dedication to share the fruits of his labors in studying and communicating some the vast treasure that is John's gospel. While I am not personally in full agreement with the Calvinistic Theology of the author, I found it beneficial to interact intellectually with those aspects brought out in this portion of Scripture and pointed out appropriately by Rev. Pink. I found no distraction from the main focus of exposition of John's deep message by virtue of any undue focus on the author's own predispositions. I highly commend this commentary to any serious disciple of Jesus.

I've been studying from this book as I teach my Sunday School class on the book of John. I find A.W. Pink's Christ-centered approach and his diligence to pull in so many helpful texts from the O.T. and N.T. into his study to be a breath of fresh air compared with the shallow, surface study in my lesson manual. The Holy Spirit has used this commentary to open up His Word to me in a life-changing way.

Funny - as I finished reading this beautiful book for the first time, one of my old favorite songs (by Hal David/Burt Bacharach) as a child growing up in the 60's started playing in my head...What the world needs now is love sweet love,It's the only thing that there's just too little of.What the world needs now is love sweet love,No not just for some but for everyone!The simplicity of the words husband and husband team Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell have used to tell the true story of a couple of male chinstrap penguins (Roy and Silo) at New York's Central Park Zoo, who had paired off as a couple and were given an extra fertilized egg to hatch on their way to becoming a family unlike any of the zoo's other animal families (but a family nonetheless!), makes this book a perfect way to begin naturally introducing the concepts of acceptance and inclusion to youngsters. The soft illustrations by Henry Cole are such a nice complement to the story - I'm really looking forward to sharing this special book with our four grandchildren, who will most certainly be meeting many families of varying composition during their lifetimes! The way baby Tango and his dads are welcomed by the children coming to see them after his birth is a good "footprint in the sand" to leave on a child's growing sense of the world around them.I'm a dozen years late in my personal discovery of the book, so I missed the brouhaha surrounding its 2005 publication, having appeared on the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom's "Top Ten Most Challenged Book List" from 2006-2010, reappearing in 2012, and - sadly - again as late as 2014. This is such a gentle book, and to imagine literature that celebrates the love and devotion of parents would ever appear on such a list is disheartening. This is a sweet book that talks of the desire to share a home and a family (I'll type the text in the comment section below for parents/grandparents to read for themselves if they're on the fence about the book.) The younger of my two sons is gay, has been in a committed and happy relationship with his partner for seven years, and should they eventually marry and decide to begin a family, it would be so painful to the heart of this mother to see his family shunned or ridiculed. I hope the authors have not experienced it since the birth of their own daughter, little Gemma, whom I suppose is about 8 years old now and feeling very loved and secure.Children are drawn to books about animals, there aren't too many animals cuter or funnier than penguins, and if you're a parent or grandparent who's searching for ways to begin opening your child's mind to the concept of the different types of families they'll encounter (or may be a part of!) along life's journey, as I myself have been, I think "And Tango Makes Three" is a nice place to start.

I am so happy to have finally purchased this book! As an educator, I am excited to share this book with my students during "Banned Book Week" as I know that they will ask the reason why this book is banned from so many different schools and libraries. It's an added bonus that Neil Patrick Harris narrates the audiobook.

Got this for my goddaughter for her Christmas. I babysat her and she played dolls with me and insisted that the house had to "have a mommy and a daddy and a boy and a girl" (she's 4), so I got this so she could learn about all different types of families and what families can look like. She loved it because of the penguins and the story is just the cutest. Her mom was thrilled too.

When I bought this book I had read it before. I loved the story I loved the cute penguins but I also loved how this book taught love and acceptance. At first I was a little worried to show it to my administrators at work (I work at a preschool) but they all LOVED it and were raving about it! I had the book for a few short weeks. It was the most loved book of the classroom. All the kids loved tango, so much so when they see a penguin it's not a penguin it's tango. The kids are to young to understand the part of tango having two daddies. But they do know that the daddies love tango. This book teaches them at a young age that love is love and Roy and silo love tango, and that's all that matters. I'm ashamed to say the book has since been lost, I had it in a special spot and when I returned from vacation it had vanished. No where to be found. I have a coworker who is religious and known for taking books with themes he doesn't believe in. Sad thing is I bought this book with my own money.It's a lovely look and I hope you and your children can enjoy this book together.

My son and me love to read this book, the illustrations are very cute too. I really like that it is a true story and that it depicts a lot of our beloved central park zoo.

He follows the two main characters reflected existence; one born into money and talented, descents into madness, while the other from humble beginings ascends to respect and acclaim.As they used to say, a great read. This book has all the characters of a great novel but, ironically enough, is drawn from life. Highly recommended.

Dr. W. C. Minor, whose story is at the center of Simon Winchester's The Professor and The Madman, is "crazy". From the symptoms that are described in the book, he would most likely today be classified as a paranoid schizophrenic. An intelligent and sophisticated man, he was a surgeon and a member of the Union Army during the Civil War before he moved to the UK and his delusions of being tormented in his sleep led him to fatally shoot an innocent man. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a British asylum for most of the rest of his life. But he didn't stop being an educated man solely by virtue of his condition, and with his endless spare time he got himself involved in a one-of-a-kind project: the Oxford English Dictionary.Winchester weaves together the tale of Dr. Minor and the history of dictionaries leading up to the creation of the OED. English is a language quite different than many of the other European ones in the way it has grown explosively and liberally borrowed from others, and for quite a long time there was no real attempt to catalog it: a few volumes that sought to define the most unusual words existed, but an actual dictionary of ALL the words with ALL their meanings didn't really happen until the OED. It took decades of work and thousands of volunteers to develop the dictionary, and Minor's contribution thereto was significant indeed...enough to merit a dedication in the finished product even.Dr. Minor was seriously ill and a criminal at that, but we should know by now that these things do not per se mean that someone is incapable of being a productive member of society. That being said, there is a shock value there: we don't usually think of murderers as the kind of people who wind up knee-deep in dictionary development. Winchester chooses to emphasize Minor's humanity rather than sensationalize his crime, taking us through his life as the son of missionaries in Sri Lanka (there's an odd bit of colonialism where Winchester is weirdly attached to the British name of Ceylon) through the horrors he would have seen as a medical professional in the Civil War and his subsequent mental decline, leading down to his crime and its punishment, and then wrapping up with his long years in institutional care. Even though because of the time in history, that care consisted mostly of a relatively gentle confinement rather than actual treatment, it still should be enough to remind us that there are probably plenty of people in jail or psychiatric hospitals today who do have something to offer the world.The book itself is solid but not really exceptional in any way. It's an interesting story and well-told, but it wasn't an especially memorable or special read. For non-fiction readers or people interested in dictionary development, it's definitely a good choice, but I don't know that I'd recommend going out of one's way to read it if this sort of thing doesn't usually do it for you.

An absolutely fascinating account of the origins of the largest lexical enterprise in history, the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as the men who initiated it and worked on it.Among the latter, the most interesting was William Minor. An American and a doctor by training, he served in the US Army during the last years of the Civil War when he went through, and participated in, some gruesome events indeed. These events may or may not have triggered his paranoia which caused him to murder an innocent laborer in London, where he moved after the war's end. Whereupon he was judged insane and committed to an asylum for life. It was from his cell, in reality two comfortable rooms, that he made a vast contribution to the Dictionary.The weakest part of the book comes towards the end, There Winchester, speculates--speculates is the right word--about what may have caused MInor's paranoia and mental illness. Comparing the symptoms to those of PTSD, he claims that the latter was first identified during the 1991 Gulf War! A pity, for I would gladly have given his book five stars.

I love books that take a minor detail from history, research the heck out of it, and find an interesting story in the process. I would like to research and write a book like that. I was loving this book until the final chapter. At that point the author got a bit preachy and worse yet, included some misinformation about prevalence and etiology of psychiatric disorders. But first the story, which is fascinating!This book is about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. Have you ever thought about how difficult it would be to compile a list of words, their origins, definitions, and literary quotes to support the definition in the era before computers? I cannot believe that dictionaries were printed under those conditions! The book does a wonderful job of explaining the arduous task of making a dictionary. Numerous volunteers were recruited to find words in literature and support the definitions. The author includes a brief history of the dictionaries that came before the OED. The story really focuses on James Murray and his work organizing the dictionary. It also focuses on one of the volunteers, Dr. W. C. Minor. He was a civil war physician who witnessed terrible things and lost his mind. He murdered a man while he was in a delusional state. He was placed in Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane for a number of years and eventually transferred to St. Elizabeth’s in Washington D. C. While at Broadmoor he volunteered to his time to compile words for the dictionary and was one of the more prodigious contributors. He and Professor Murray had a long scholarly correspondence, eventually meeting at Broadmoor and becoming friends.This is a very interesting story and certainly gives you an appreciation for dictionaries and the people who create them. I was really enjoying this book until the end. The author goes on for several pages about the injustice to the man murdered by Dr. Minor, who in effect has been lost to history. Valid point, but in my opinion the author was straying from the purpose of his book. My larger concern is with some inaccuracies about mental illness. He talks about PTSD not being recognized until the Gulf War (1990-91). However, the diagnosis was listed in the DSM in 1980. And of course “Shell Shocked” from WWI was a precursor to our current definition of PTSD. This may have been an ambiguously expressed idea rather than an actual error. I also disagree with his statement about lack of advances in medical treatment of schizophrenia and our knowledge of the etiology. I have bought many of the books in this series. I use them with my ESOL students and they are an excellent resource.I like the breakdown of "people," "land," and "culture." The books provide a good mix of geography, history, scenery, customs, food, religious holidays, music, food, etc.Good photos, and the writing is strong enough to be of interest to adults but not so heavy that it chases away middle school or high school readers.I also really like the selection of countries. The series includes some of the biggest and best known countries (major European countries like England, Spain, and Italy; China; Brazil; etc.) but it also includes lesser known countries like El Salvador.Excellent series.

This a warm and tender tale of woman trying to adapt to a life that is rather solitary and lonely. Her husband does not initially help because he is not sure of how to help her and goes about his day as if she is not there. Tristan's mother is a work of disparity and whatever anger lays in her heart needs love. The only problem with this story is that it doesn't deal with Tristan's mother's anger.

This story is a nice romance that quietly, gently unfolds in a realistic way. I would give it 4 stars but, it is short and the characters and settings weren't developed as well as a good, longer story would have done. I enjoyed Emma Morgan's short novel and will read more of her offerings. I recommend this book.

As this was the third book that I have read that was written by Emma Morgan , I was expecting to enjoy it, and I was not disappointed!I would indeed definitely recommend that others also read this book. I look forward to reading many more written by Emma Morgan.Â

Kathleen is left alone to take care of her younger sister. She places an add for marriage and Tristan answers it. He is a miner and spends all day in the mine. Kathleen is not sure she has made the right decision. Christmas is coming and she misses her family.

Another story written to inform and entertain which hit its goal with a bang! The characters were well exploited to make this an unforgettable tale!

So enjoyed this story about two lonely people that found romance. So glad they have their two younger sisters to live with them

I really enjoyed the characters in this story and the bravery Kathleen has to travel from New York to Montana.

This was a short, sweet, and clean book. I loved the storyline. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I devoured this book in less than 2 days, as I could not put it down. Unlike so many other books about finding your passion, improving your leadership skills, or time management, Jessica's book resonated with me like no other to date. ( And I read at least one book a week!) She writes beautifully - seamlessly integrating so many personal stories of herself as well as others who have shared amazing stories of inspiration and success. There is some good in any book encouraging the reader to take positive action. The take away here in this book, is suck it up, get over it! There saved you the book's cost.

This book is a short read but a very good one at that. I’m a person who values quality over quantity and unlike other books out there that contain a lot of useless fluff, this book has great step by step content. The author really knows what he’s talking about. Definitely recommend!

This book is short (you can read in about two hours), but it packs a lot of valuable life lessons. It's the book you'll wish you'd read long ago. It's already inspired me to take steps to remove mental blocks in life to reach my potential!

The book has almost nothing to do with mental toughness. Its so touchy feely it hurts. The whole thing can be summarized as I overcame an addiction and started a business. Couple of rah rah positive affirmations and beliefs. Overall very little substance and could get better info from Google. Big disappointment

Short overview of getting back up after feeling defeated and a basic guide to building self esteem. There were many opportunities for this author to go in depth with various ideas he presented, but kept it at a 6th grade reading level of an extended introduction paragraph.This is a good book for those just graduating highschool and wondering what to do next. However, this isn't helpful for someone who has already dealt with the real world with the realization that you do not get what you want unless you push toward it.

Excellent, quick read. Hung Pham clearly outlines his method for overcoming self defeating beliefs, building a foundation for success and persisting through failures and challenges. Written from his own personal experience, Pham speaks to many who struggle to stake their claim and inspires that it is possible to develop mental toughness skills to reach their own success. Highly recommended for an uplifting and clarifying experience.

Unlike other books I’ve read on Amazon, this book doesn’t beat around the bush. The author gets right to the point of why we create mental barriers and how we can break them by using this 12 step program. It’s an excellent book, I’m happy with my purchase.
