ForewordArabic poetry is as vast as it is deep, encompassing all manner of poetic expression from Morocco to Iraq and spanning more than fifteen centuries. In its early stages it formed part of an oral tradition, and there were systematic and collective efforts to transmit it to later generations. Poetry not only entertained and delighted, it also served to memorialize individuals, communities and events. When scholars and scribes of the second and third Islamic centuries (ninth and tenth centuries, ce) began to record this inheritance in writing, it served as an important foundation forknowledge. Even today,it has pride of place in the public domain, engaging the elites and the masses in equal measure, albeit in different registers.This anthology attempts to capture the breadth and depth of the Arabic poetic legacy through its inclusion of pieces composed from pre-Islamic times through to the twenty-first century. It does not claim to offer a representative sampling, however. Instead, in an effort to lend coherence to the anthology and to appeal to the lay reader, I have selected poems reflecting sentiments of desire or longing, poems whose most immediate meanings transcend the limitations of time and space. Such expressions of yearning occur in a wide variety of genres. In addition to straight- forward love poetry, or ghazal, we find mystical poems and elegies. The nostalgic stance of the heroic odes, including the celebrated Mu'allaqat, with their contemplation of the beloved’s abandoned campsite and their emphasis on cycles of death and rebirth, famine and feasting, leave the poetic persona and reader alike aching for the spring rains. Al-Shanfara’s ‘L-Poem’, ostensibly a poem of rejection which subverts tribal values, strikes one as a portrait of a terribly lonely person longing for companionship and family. The ancient genre of ‘longing for homelands’ (al-hanin ila alawtan), represented here by the ‘Song of Maisuna’, finds echoes in the selections of the exiled modern poets. Some of the pieces in the anthology read as expressions of sheer delight, or as an appreciation of everyday affairs, while others, particularly among the modern selections, express an anti-nostalgic and deeply felt yearning for change. It is hoped that the reader will find these poems diverting, moving and provocative.Marlé HammondNote: Pre-modern Arabic poems were not given titles. This book is wonderful because it includes both classical and modern poems. My only gripe is that the authors' names are not written in Arabic anywhere. Other than that, the Arabic/English translations are wonderful.

Excellent

One of the reasons I chose this book, was my interest in the great Islamic writers from Al-Andalus prior to the 10th century. It did not disappoint me in this regard. In addition, i came to understand how other writers illustrated their thoughts by using metaphors and symbolism in life's trials of love and capitulation. Abu-Al-quasim Al Shabbi from Tunisia, an early 20th century writer penned "The Will of Life," a poem about tyranny and oppression was one such writer whom intrigued my intellect. As such, I would suggest this collection of poems as a gateway to research and understand the many known Arabic writers which span both time and location.

The book is written from the experiences of a confirmed abolitionist who helped escort escaped slaves to freedom by means of the underground railroad. The descriptions he gives makes one know of the desperation and panic the slaves felt in their dash for freedom from the lash. It also details the heroics of other persons who assisted the fugitives: such as the captain of a ship that happened to be carrying several slaves. The ship was stopped and searched by men trying to recapture the runaways. They thrust swords into hay that was stored on the boat but found nothing. Then they took an axe to several places on the deck but still found nothing. The captain of the vessel bluffed them by grabbing the axe and demanding they tell him where they wanted to search and he would use the axe. He then hit the deck with such force the men backed off and after making him pay the travel tax, let hum go. When he arrived at his destination he freed his grateful cargo from their hiding place. The retelling of the horrors these people from their own mouths cannot be equaled by stories handed down from book to book. I prefer my historical research to be done from resources written as closely to the actual occurrences as possible because as so often happens, one present day author of a book will make an assumption and state it: then someone else perpetuates that inaccuracy because "they saw it in a book, so it must be true".. As an historical researcher, if I can't verify it for myself, I won't use it. This book is from the actual participants. It is a welcome addition to my research resources.

This is a riveting read with descriptive details about people who broke away from their chains of slavery and made their way, often with help from people who were part of the elusive "underground railroad", to a life of freedom in Canada. It is both heart rending that any human being could be subjected to the horrors of slavery - sometimes with horrible brutality used to "keep them in line", and uplifting that so many managed to escape. It is incredible that anyone who is part of the human race could and would treat other humans in such despicable ways - and justify themselves in doing so. It is also heart warming that a segment of the northern states population were sympathetic to their cause, and enabled them to be free human beings for the rest of their lives.

A wonderful compilation of personal accounts of runaway slaves that passed through the shelter of William Still, son of slaves and an important cog in assisting those who had escaped slavery. This is an extremely important collection because it was first printed after the Civil War and before Reconstruction-otherwise it may have been lost-this is a reprinting. Bad masters/mistresses, okay masters/mistresses, these people just wanted to be free, but aside from the dangers, they had to possibly leave behind elders who needed them, dependent children, ailing spouses, etc. You will learn a lot from this read!

Loved it. It was honest, true and tells the REAL STORY of the ABOVE GROUND escape from south to north and some to Canada; some on the frozen Ohio River . The man who kept 1st hand accounts was accurate and truthful and as a result, we have now a real historical account of the scary and risky trips the slaves and families took to be free.

This little gem is exactly as its title says: FIRST HAND narratives. This book is a perfect read for anyone researching that time period whether sixth-grader or thesis writer. Naturally, the spelling and grammar are left as was originally written,spoken by men,women who despite a ban on education, often found the wherewithal to self-teach. Reads like you are THERE!

William Still was very instrumental in helping slaves to run on the Underground RR. He wrote his book in 1872. Anyone interested in Slaves Narratives should read this book. He gives comment on alot of slaves that did not become famous but neverthe less escaped. Nothing can take the place of real live witnesses. This is an excellent book for any ones library of AFrican American History

this book has some good information, however, much of the information about supplies is dated.

This is a small and short book without a whole lot of information. It's O.K. but I'd check it out of the library first to see if I wanted to purchase it.

I look forward to trying all the techniques in it. I have been getting more and more into using pastels.

This is a lovely book, but sadly too many photos without 'step by step' instructions that can replicate them. The few instructions that were given were very helpful. I would just like to get an instruction book that allows you to replicate a number of photos however.

THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS INSTRUCTION BOOK EVER!looking at the blurb,you would think the book is full of demos on coloring flowers,but it is untrue!it has only a mere 3 demos and is a pathetically short book.don't waste your money on it!!!!!

If you're familiar with Chelsea Handler, you know exactly what to expect. Unlike her earlier books, Chelsea's well-deserved celebrity is at the front and center of this book. The book follows a few of Chelsea's ridiculously crazy vacation stories from Africa to the Bahamas. Her inability to function as a lone human being is at the forefront of this book. Her reliance on others makes for many of the jokes.Listening to this audiobook at work, I found myself stifling many laughs although a few ear-to-ear smiles definitely escaped. I love when comediennes read their own audiobooks. Chelsea even imitates accents and the voices of her friends. My life has been missing some Chelsea handler in it since her show ended so this audiobook filled that void.I give this audiobook a 4/5. I highly recommend it to fans of Chelsea Handler. If you're not as familiar with her, you'll still find a lot of laughs in this book.

This is definitely the weakest of Chelsea Handler's books currently released books, and it's also a bit different. There aren't many tales of Chelsea's sexual exploits. Instead, UGANDA BE KIDDING ME is comprised of tales of Chelsea's traveling "adventures," starting with her safari trips in Africa (hence the title). Unfortunately, most of the tales, while amusing, weren't really that funny to me. She demonstrates how clueless she is and some stupid predicaments she gets into the more privileged she gets. Instead of cheering her on (like in the previous novels), I wanted to tell her to grow up. Sadly, I don't think I laughed out loud at Chelsea's musings once (unlike her friend Heather McDonald's latest). Ironically, I *did* LOL at her friend "Schmitney Schummings'" observations about Chelsea in UGANDA.If you're a big Chelsea Handler fan, it's worth a read, but if not, this isn't the book to start with.P.S. I'd also like to point out that the publisher, Grand Central Publishing, has some pretty crappy editors on staff. I noticed lots of typos, double (repeated) paragraphs, etc. in the hardcover 1st edition. This is your best work? Seriously? Uganda be kidding me.

This book is essentially a smattering of random life events with about half the book themed with travel. I found her honesty about herself and her friends and family really refreshing because honestly, as crazy as she may seem, she has a level of awareness that is strangely refreshing. What I found interesting is that maybe the anecdotal parts of the stories were embellished or exaggerated for effect, but ironically often in a way that would make her appear worse or more at fault for her transgressions. I mention this because there were differences from these stories in the book to on her standup special and in interviews. Chelsea Handler has a way of allowing you into her mind and her thought process which again is pretty ironic when compared to her stories of being such a liar as a child and even now. Ultimately it was interesting reading about a fairly eccentric person who is obviously trying to do more for herself and seems to have a very generous spirit and nostalgic and kind heart. Her sharp and biting remarks or sarcastic quips are a stark comparison to her extreme closeness with her friends and strong emotional ties with her sister. If it sounds as though I'm reviewing the author and not the book, that's because in this case I think they're synonymous. You really get a glimpse into how a very unique person's mind works.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Chelsea Handler fan, and have been for years. I bought this book with excitement, and I was not disappointed. Her style is raw and funny, and she doesn't mince words. I usually take three or so weeks (reading in the evenings for a short time) to read a book, I'm pretty sure this was completely finished in three days. Her travels to Africa make a great backdrop for her shenanigans, and it was interesting to get to know a bit more about her real life friends. I hope she will come out with another book soon.

I love, love, love Chelsea as a person. But some of the stories are a bit contrived and unbelievable. Despite her self depreciating humor it is obvious that she is not an idiot. I also just didn't find myself laughing at much of this book. It was also a bit weird that this book was 90% Africa vacations and 10% other traveling. It just seemed disjointed. The writing is weak, but I do think that is because Chelsea actually writes her books, so I'll give her props for that. If not, she needs to fire her ghost writer because dang, it's bad.My biggest pet peeve is the editing. There were unforgivable mistakes. For example, there are two paragraphs in a row that are the same. Just a read-through should have caught that -- no editing skills would be needed! I have worked in publishing and I get that mistakes slip through. But there were so many horrible ones that I found it distracting.

The least interesting of Chelsea’s books. Quite honestly I found myself bored. Her sense of humor has gotten a little stale and it’s kind of sad to see a woman her age acting so foolishly and be so proud of it. If you’re looking to capture the magic of her early books you’ll be disappointed.

Chelsea wrote another funny book that focuses on her travels around the world. Her stories are hit and miss in that some of them are hilarious, while others are just mildly entertaining. I bought a copy of the first printing and there were major editing errors. One of the most notable was two identical paragraphs right next to each other and then of course several spelling errors and other common things that should have been spotted. I would hope that in the later editions these have been corrected.

She is hilarious! Great summertime/vacation read. I liked a couple of her other books better, (My Horizontal Life and Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea) but this one was funny too, especially if you like to travel. I honestly think her books are funnier than she is in person, because they explain some of the expressions she gets on her face etc.
