I'm going to expand this review shortly, but having just finished it couldn't wait to say how it broke the intellectual block I've had in deciding between realism and operationalism for about forty years now. I'm not giving you much to go on, I know, but "philosophers", philosophy majors, and history of science specialists should get a lot out of this book. I'm impressed. No wonder it's gotten a good review on Amazon and recently (my cause of buying it) in "Science".HERE'S THE EXPANSIONWhen I was a boy, we were basking in the afterglow of phenomenalism. It was still perfectly respectable to adhere to the likes of Bergmann, Russell, Mach and Freddie Ayer. In fact, I'm not far from there now. Kuhns became the flavor of the day, with a lot of staying power. That has resulted in some pretty outlandish claims about the relativity of science (by which I will always mean physics). And Karl Popper, of course, one of my favorites. But infusing the whole atmosphere of the late 20th century -in physics and philosophy - a kind of hard core realism became more and more acceptable. I don't know why, maybe the computer facilitating a materialist theory of mind. This took place as physics became less and less imaginable, as Berkeley would say. Indeed, today we are treated to twice yearly books by physicists themselves waxing philosophical and questioning the correspondence of their theories with reality. Baggott, the most widely read, is but one.Chang give reading suggestions at the beginning of this book. For a quick go thru, either just to get to the philosophy part or to make it easier, he suggests a reader may skip the latter part of the first three History of the Chemical Revolution chapters. I didn't. They were quite interesting. Idiosyncratically, for me, I deal with older terminology in some of my restoration work and I actually found it enlightening in that respect.I can only hint at the philosophy of science aspect. You really should read it. "Reality" is defined as that which is resistant to our will. Science is the exploration of that realm. There are many procedures we can use to launch investigations, at any one time they may seem contradictory, but Chang's point is they can all be "valid" within their own definitional scheme and some, even the losers may contain insights the winners do not. "Theory" is - thank God - a term that is shunned in the book. The upshot is a kind of pragmatism and multitude approach which avoids the kind of glib relativism often associated with such a view. By the end of the book, I felt some one had washed my brain. Is water H2O? I don't want to get to much into it, but it always seemed to me that's a very simplistic way of thinking, this book shows why. "Atom" and like words are often tossed out like the y belong to the group "kings and ships and sealing wax": they do not. Read this book.I keep bees. In another 65 million years when our descendants are living in damp borrows, the descendents of bees may be writing physics books. The sensory apparatus of a bee is really, really different from ours (what it's like to be a bee is an order of magnitude harder than what it is like to be a bat). Bee physics may be untranslatable into homininspeak for all I know. It may not even be "object-based" as ours is, to start with. But bee physics will be just as valid as our own, just as good as physics. Read this book.The fifth chapter may be off putting to some readers, and I feel it is the weakest part of the book. One because it's unlikely that philosophical suggestions from outside will alter the course of physics and two because some of Chang's suggestions for introducing alternative type programs into the school curriculum may easily be misunderstood.Regarding the PRICE controversy: the paperback was 60+. There are plenty philosophy and other books I wouldn't buy at this price out of principle (the Cambridge Ancient Histories are 200-300+!). This one, $65, a bargain.P.S., there's a cartoon in this weeks New Yorker ( Oct. 3, 2014) which could serve as a frontis for the second edition. Two guys in lab coats standing in the CERN and one says, "when you've got an accelerator, everything looks like a particle."

I have read widely in the history and philosophy of science (HPS), but, for me, it always came down to Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos, and Feyerabend... until I read this book, which I consider the most original and insightful HPS book written in the past forty years.If you're not interested in reading yet another history of chemistry, albeit a very interesting and original one, then you should fast forward to chapter 5: "Pluralism in Science: A Call to Action," wherein Hasok Chang makes his cogent and persuasive argument.

At $120 I know that I tried not to buy it, but I read his Temperature book and figured this would be pretty good. The electronic copy at the library was poor, image rather than character-based, and only available a page at a time. The sample I read on my Kindle was excellent and seemed important, so it concerns me that people will not read it because of the price.I enjoyed learning so much about the history of chemistry. Prof. Chang makes a compelling argument that it is important to learn about the details and make independent judgments rather than believe everything wrapped in a scientific wrapper. It is technical and challenging to read, but he seemed to make a consistent effort to be approachable and not write over my head. It is well-researched and documented. A nice piece of work and I hope he receives the academic credit he deserves.The questions he raises are important for society to consider and to motivate people to investigate further, especially students. Ever since we invented tools there has been a question about technology. Simplicity and a broad reach are not necessarily consistent with current knowledge. Ultimately truth and beauty may be united, but do not progress together. It may be a matter of perspective, so it is personal. This seems counter-intuitive to the nature of science and mathematics which are heralded for the universality and independence. These ideas are difficult to discuss without turning into a mush pie and Chang’s books by using specific examples raise narrow and broad questions which are important and worth your time.

Best book in several years

Is Water H2O? is a really fun book for newbies and professionals alike in the defense of Scientific Pluralism. It has a very easy-to-read format, where each chapter details a new argument with subsections generally devoted to 1. a history lesson on chemistry appropriate for all readers, 2. a philosophical position on scientific pluralism, and 3. a response to common or anticipated objections. This makes it both an in-depth account of Chang's thoughts on science and a good book to lend around or chat about with friends.While I personally enjoyed it, Chang shares a rather cheeky writing style with Feyerabend especially when going over the science history, so your milage may vary.

This got a great review in Science, but unless Springer knocks the price for the Kindle edition down to about $10, I'm not buying.....

Great for nursing students! Light enough to pack in your backpack for clinical days. Dummies it down for one to understand. Gives brief descriptions of indications, description, what would increase / decrease levels.

This book delivers exactly what I wanted: a clear FAST resource for clinical use that you can use to quickly find accurate information about normal lab values, function, and why those would increase or decrease. I don't want colors, goofy pictures, or lengthy info.It's not the best size for fitting in a pocket, even though as you can see by the pictures that it isn't a big book, but right now I carry it easily in my clipboard. I'd like a pocket-size.So, in the beginning of the book you have a few pages with info about blood collection - I haven't read it except for the order of draws. Then there's a lab chart with all the values. Last the bulk of the book is the list of common labs in alphabetical order with a brief description but just long enough for what you need to know and can access fast.

It is packed with useful information. It's not drawn out and gets to the point. I wanted something to explain lab values and what effects them all in one place. My biggest issue is the print is cheap and blurry. If I didn't know better, potassium looks to be 35-55. Creatine appears to be 0.7-140, correct is 0.7-1.4, why is there a 0 after the 4? There is a handful that are misleading. You have to flip to the page that has the value to clarify. The lab value chart is too small and pixilated. Which is bad with decimals and + symbols. The lab value chart in a lab value book should be clear. I added pics so you can see. I don't regret this purchase, but this is a downfall. The pic pointing to the value is blown up, it's small print.I have now spent the better part of an hour checking the lab values according to our class books. Only 3-4 were the same. The longer I have this the less I trust the information. I will use it to review general information, but I will not use this as my sole source of information.

I am a nursing student and this is a concise and easy to use guide for explaining abnormal lab values. I use it for all my care plans and it is extremely helpful in connecting lab values to pathophysiology. In future editions, please add pages for the various WBCs, neutrophils, esinophils and so on. Would also love to see commonly used drugs that can cause a change listed under each lab... for example Lasix can cause low Na, K, and calcium. Overall I love it and it's an excellent value for $10. Must-have for RN students.

It's like they uploaded an in-progress version of the book, with sections crossed out and reworded. It makes it really annoying to read. The tables for values are TINY and can't be enlarged. I'm sure the information is great, but it's really annoying to have paid the same price as the print version for a product that's of far worse quality. Especially since it's not hard to upload a correct copy of the book! Where's the quality control?

Great for clinical, the charts and such in the front are illegible (bad printing) it looks almost like when you try to take a picture of a computer screen and it's black and white so it's just not usable. The actual labs are helpful. I like how there is a description of what the lab is most generally used for and what an increase and decrease in levels can mean. However, there are many common labs that are not listed. This did help me with clinicals but there were values I had to use another source for that I felt really should be in the book. For the price though it us a good resource I just wish they had fixed the front pages and added a few more of the very common ones in there. I would have gladly paid a few dollars more for it. It's very simple and easy to use

What a fantastic reference book!!! This will be very helpful as a nursing student!! Only two comments that I must address. One, the order of draw tubes should be printed in color instead of black and white. This will help students differentiate between the two EDTA tubes. Secondly, as a nationally certified and practicing phlebotomist, the methods of collecting are incorrect. I’m very thankful for my phlebotomy training so when I become a nurse, I won’t injure myself or the patient. Please change that picture!!!

I just started my junior year as a nursing student, I bought this book hoping to help me learn different lab values. There are a few reasons I wouldn’t recommend buying, one is because depending on your classes and the books required for them the lab values are always different so some in this book are inaccurate to what I’m learning in school. Two is because this book doesn’t include SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS of different lab values!!!!! Why wouldn’t you include that???? Anyways don’t waste your money buying this book!!!!!!

If Pirlo hadn't become a footballer, he would have become an artist or poet. In fact he is.I'm no fan of Italian football but had read a very short snippet of this book in a UK newspaper, where he refers to the 2005 Champions League Final defeat to Liverpool, a game which AC Milan had lead 3-0 at half time. I purchased the book on the strength of those few sentences and wasn't surprised to find the rest of the book was just as entertaining and enlightening. What is surprising is, Pirlo doesn't once (if I recall) provide descriptive about any of the hundreds of games he's played in as such, whether at national or international level. There's no "I passed the ball to Del Piero..." type of narrative anywhere....This is more a philosophical look at the game, his life, the lessons he's learned and anecdotes from behind the scenes. Which in my opinion makes for the perfect football autobiography. Pirlo is as good a writer as he is a footballer. And that's probably the highest accolade I can give this book.

Andrea Pirlo's account is refreshingly honest, real, full of heart, and draws you deep into the psyche of the ups and downs of one of the greatest legends of sports history. This book serves as an inspiration to anyone wanting to have a real insider's perspective into the world of football. This book is timeless, with lessons to teach to future generations. The narrative is at times humorous, at times heart-wrenching, but at all times gripping and engaging. I could not put this book down and came away a transformed person--something I did not expect. A bit disappointing. Pirlo was/is a consumate midfielder. He hardly seems to move which makes defenders forget about him despite his being the biggest danger on the pitch because they're distracted from him by his more kinetic teammates. But he is always drifting, drifting, drifting into open space so that he can be given the ball. Pirlo in space with the ball is a nightmare to the opposition.I was hoping to get more insight into how this great player's brain thought about the game. How much of his play is thought? How much is feeling? Intution? Analysis? How would he use his average size to outplay bigger, stronger, faster players? How did he assess the situation? How did he decide what to do? What was his mindset when his side was desperate? When his side was in control? When the match was finely poised? Etc.But they is little to none of this in the book. Mostly it is about contract negotiations and his reasons for moving from one club to another. That has to be the most boring aspect of Pirlo's magnificent career. I'm sorry the book focused mostly on that.OTOH, there are a few good lines and anecdotes here and here. But frankly, the best writing is the preface written by one of Pirlo's managers. If the rest of the book were as good as the preface, I'd give it 5 stars and a glowing review.

When most players play, there is a sense of urgency and tension in their game. With Pirlo however, there is calmness personified.I'd like to believe it's not because he lacks the drive or passion, but because the route to the goal is well-mapped in his skull. And with his book as we'll, one is unable to see the direction of the narrative, but can enjoy the ride nevertheless. We leave the visions to Pirlo.

Right at the start of the book, I was all in. The author's use of the English language was fresh, elegant, and enjoyable as far as biography's go. I really felt like Andrea was giving us a real glimpse into his head. After finishing, I feel like I really know him as a person and not just an amazing #21. The book consistently kept my attention and even offered a more comedic element than I was expecting. I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend to all soccer fans.

A while back, I heard Rocky Hudson on The "Soccer" Show saying he wished Pirlo would smile more while he was playing. I think Charlie Stilitano was cohosting that day and said Pirlo has a great sense of humor (much to my surprise). After reading some of the reviews, they were echoing what Charlie said. You won't have to get too far into the book to see that Charlie and the reviews are correct. Considering this book was translated from Italian to English, it still works out. Andrea isn't afraid to give his opinions. Whether you agree with him or not, he gives you a lot to think about. He was overshadowed for much of his career until he went to Juventus but those of us who root for the Azzurri (and I guess if you like AC Milan) knew how good he was for a long time. He didn't marry a pop "superstar", play for a team or country that overhyped him, have others carry him to great results, release his own cologne, pretend he had the biggest contract in soccer or pretend he was going to buy an MLS team like some other midfielders that can't carry his jock. He's just been that good for a long time. His book is that good, too. Magisterial!

This book is a stroll, a pleasurable stroll. The pages turn just like Pirlo's passes. His character is revealed. Every fan of modern football ought to get his hands on this book. A great read that makes you feel all the more affectionate towards Pirlo.

For anyone who loves football Italian style this book will be a joy. Pirlo is candid, droll , sincere and at times very funny. Anecdotes about so many of the Italian greats abound and while this is a quick read it is full of a love for the beautiful game and a reverence for the Azzurri that one would expect from a legend who plays the game so well while appearing to make it effortless. A great book for all football lovers.
