I enjoyed the writing in this book and enjoyed hearing the story of a young tribal prince's descent into captivity and his ascent to freedom, as well as what he did with his freedom. I purchased the book for middle schoolers, but felt the writing is better geared toward 3-4 graders.The history was not "whitewashed," but the horrors of the middle passage and difficulties of life were handled subtly for sensitive children. Perhaps without further study, a student might conclude that life as a slave wasn't so bad, but with additional discussion about the realities of slave trade, it will be an excellent resource. The book mentioned once that he was beaten with a whip, and mentions a few times the scars left, but because of the story's emphasis is on his willfull path toward freedom, the book has an overall positive feel and outcome. It's focus is not the illumination of terrors, but the perseverance of the human soul to long for freedom.It's a great book to read focusing on empowerment, discipline, and hard work in the worst of situations. I would not use it to drive the point home about slave trade.I also liked that several legal documents are inset within the story, as they made for very good reading challenges.

I did not read this book yet. The review is based on my 10 year old son's experience. He said that the beginning is slow and not "so interesting," but by the middle of the book he was hooked. He really enjoyed this book so much that he wanted to tell me all of the details. My son is high-functioning autistic and has a really difficult time getting interested in any book that doesn't involve Minecraft or Legos. With that said, he read this book in 4 days!!!! That alone is a reason to make a 5 star review.

I used Amos Fortune with my seventh and eighth grade literature classes. This was my first year using this book and I was concerned that it would not capture the modern teenage imagination. I was so pleased by their reactions. They loved the book, and I loved introducing them to well-written literature. I love the character qualities presented in this book. I will be teaching this one for years to come.

A compelling story about a freed slave who made his way north. It was the first Newbery Medal winner I encountered at age 10 when my fourth grade teacher read it aloud to our class. It's still a must read for elementary school students. Gripping, and informative about slavery in America, it began my personal journey, still going on today, to learn about and help to eradicate racism.

Nice edition of one of the most wonderful true stories I've ever read. It is an easy read, but very impacting. Highly recommended!

I liked this book because it wasn't just a boring story but a story of how a free negro man was captured, sold, got freedom, lived, and died. It was an incredible, miraculous story of how a negro named Amos was set free from slavery by his master. Amos didn't just hog his freedom, but used his freedom to help others get freedom.

I can't believe I'd never heard of Holmes' work until now. This helps me dive below form and try better to understand the reasons behind my black church experience.

This book was a whole education for me, and it has made me view everything associatedwith slavery differently. I especially appreciate the inclusion of contemplative practicesas they appear in rap, tap and other 20th century art forms, as well as the biographiesof King, Parks, etc., from a new point of view.

Contemplative Christianity is dominated by white, male authors and teachers. Barbara Holmes and Joy Unspeakable were EXACTLY what I needed, exactly when I needed it. Her stories, insights, perspective and research help expand the contemplative tradition to include people and practices that have not ever been represented. She validates ancestral wisdom as part of her and our contemplative tradition. I'm so grateful for this book and will read it many times over.

Sometimes we grow up assuming certain words mean certain things, like the word "contemplate". In "Unspeakable Joy" Dr. Holmes showed me that there is no one way to "contemplate" and since reading it I have been trying to be aware of other ways. Contemplation should bring us to the subliminal space between here and there, so that opens up my understanding and brings it to a whole new level.

"Contemplation is not confined to designated and institutional sacred places... Some sacred places bear none of the expected characteristics. The fact that we prefer stained glass windows, pomp and circumstance... has nothing to do with the sacred."Barbara Holmes' JOY UNSPEABLE is a blend of Africana history, academic discussion of contemplation and her own experience.Fairly early on in her book, Holmes brings up Randall Bailey's point that there has been a de-Africanization of Christianity, which has led to a forgetting that Augustine - one of the pillars of the Christian church - was a bishop from Africa.When she zeros in on the beginnings of the African-American church in the US, things really start to get interesting. Holmes writes that "hush arbors" provided a physical place, far enough away from plantation owners, where slaves could "pray about their situation in cries so heartfelt that heaven itself must have shuddered."Thus was born the African-American roots of the black church's style of contemplation."Slavery is a crisis of such extraordinary proportions that unless equally extraordinary measures are taken, the result will always be the destruction of humanness... The contemplative turn occurs in the midst of trauma and is a crisis mediation that gives birth to a new community. This community contemplatively reorders its priorities and begins the designated task of sifting through God's broken heart for their liberation."Unlike eurocentric forms of contemplation, which tend to be individual, quiet and removed from the physical world, Holmes argues that "I have often wondered what Christian communities expect when they invoke the presence of the Spirit called Holy. [In the African-American experience] something happened when the Spirit was present.""The historical black church is the blessed legacy of the ancestors," says Holmes. Ancestors that are on a pilgrimmage where "that which has afflicted you may become your salvation."Given its rich history of communal contemplation, out loud and lamenting, in the middle of struggle, Holmes calls the black church in North America to "Claim its role as mother and witness to the working of God here on earth. As a mother, its first call is not to church growth but the birthing and nurturing of the Christ imaged in the least of us. As a witness to God-with-us against war and hurting the poor."Holmes reminds us of the three Marys (among them Mary, Jesus' mother, and Mary Magdalene) who remained at the foot of the cross with Jesus while all of his other followers, save John, fled. Holmes sees their witness as a powerful form of contemplation, right in the middle of suffering.She makes an interesting point that "contemplation always involves some mix of reality and transcendence... even more problematic is the belief that we are right and that our image and understanding of God supersedes all others..." Pentecost, to Holmes' way of thinking, is born out of communal contemplation and "from the realm of multiple realities, the Spirit storms the upper room, and disrupts the probability of institutional dysfunction that is certain to follow Christ's leave-taking."Holmes offers the rich examples of Fannie Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and Howard Thurman and Sue Bailey as being expressions of black contemplatives. In Holmes' opinion what black America needs is a "return to reclaim its unique Africana contemplative heritage," in order to re-connect spirituality with the present social justice movement in the US. Holmes argues that the passive resistance of the Civil Right movement of the 1960s was "the spiritual destination of these justice processons and was the consciousness of the nation." Holmes continues, "the end result was that a purportedly Christian nation was forced to view its black citizens as a prototype of the suffering God, absorbing violence into their own bodies without retaliation."While Holmes is aware of the difference between the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the Black Lives Matter movement, [which is not grounded in black churches] she has hopes that the BLM movement will build upon this legacy.At the end of the day, Holmes remains deeply hopeful, defining hope as "a commitment to the strangeness of the future - a future that is uncertain, fragile, carefully negotiated and often wretched, strained and disfigured through suffering, yet it is situated in the narrow space of transcendence, like the element of surprise in the narrative, the imagined possibility tht brings resolution and redemption to the tragic and ironic, only to be upended and retured again to the struggle."Holmes concludes: "The creative exchange between the forces of segregation and nonviolent resistance could only be engaged after a contemplative period away from the immediacy of the struggle... In order to make new worlds, you need a profound understanding of the world as it is. The key is to be grounded in present reality with a reflexive grasp of the past and an irrational hope for the future."

I purchased this item for a class that I am taking this summer. The book looked brand new and was packed nicely. The item came with free two-day shipping with a free 30 day trial of Amazon Prime. Lovely UPS however, put the item on the wrong carrier and it took over a week to get to me! Fortunately, I did not have to pay for shipping.

This book provides a great way to quickly acquaint oneself with the legal implications of common school situations. However, it does fail to address special education law, namely IDEA, which is critical to truly understanding school law.

He needs to know how to deal with his subjects and how to deal with other rulers without going to war. There should have been an entire chapter on diplomacy and international trade. The alternative to these things is destroying your own principality with perpetual war. Along these lines, after Machiavelli wrote THE PRINCE and before he published it, he wrote a small work entitled “The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca” that illustrated the importance of caution and diplomacy instead of endless conquests. The key was that princes should keep the limitations of their successors in mind when planning military campaigns. After all, princes die young sometimes.Nothing clear is presented about how a prince should deal with his subjects. A prince might need to kill them, but should leave their property and women alone. He should disarm them so they can’t overthrow him. But what if the principality is being invaded and he needs armed subjects to help him fight the invaders? I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.

A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. About the Author

Gail T. Gillon, PhD, is Professor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the College of Education, Health, and Human Development at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. A native New Zealander with academic qualifications in speech–language therapy, teaching, and education, her research has focused on understanding the relationship between children’s spoken and written language development. In particular, Dr. Gillon is well known internationally for her research and publications on the importance of phonological awareness to early reading success, particularly for young children at risk for literacy difficulties. She is a Fellow of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association (ASHA) and a three-time recipient of ASHA Editor's Awards for research articles of highest merit. Dr. Gillon is currently Co-Director of a 10-year National Science Research Challenge called “A Better Start,” which includes a focus on ensuring early learning and literacy success for all New Zealand children.
