All of the books written for boys worked out great! I have a son that is Special needs had no interest in learning the facts. He has a true Christian Heart that goes beyond anything I could have taught. It has always been like he knew it already. This was a way to explain without going against how he felt. It has everything you want, need, and a little you may not want to know but it is out there. All areas are covered without losing God in the process. If are just a believer in God or not a believer this still covers all the facts at each appropriate ages. I think the one for 15 plus is okay for your 13 year old to cover also. Really good set for teaching! ! I highly, highly recommend!

This series is very well written. Medically correct, tastefully illustrated. Does a good job guiding the level of detail with the age brackets all while framing human sexuality in a Christian perspective (the main reason I purchase this series). I highly recommend using this series as a tool to having ongoing discussions about (hetero-)sexuality with your children. If you can't have mature discussions about sexuality you certainly are ready to be having sex.

I bought the entire set for my son but, since he's only 6 yrs. old, we haven't read this book yet. I was thankful to find a series on this subject that gave the information I was comfortable with providing for my son at the right age. My husband has been reading the beginning books with our son and they both enjoy the time together sharing this important information at an age appropriate level.

Muslim, Jewish and Christian parents will value the words used to discuss sexuality issues with their children. A must for parents to read early in the lives of their children to prepare them to best open up the topic at age childs classmates are talking about sexual matters.

This book is really well written and brings God in nicely without being too preachy. But, when it comes to matters of opinion, it just went too far for me. The book advises no sex until marriage and no masturbation. Generally, it gave good practical advice but it just went a little too far for me. Oh, and, no terrible surprise, but it was anti-gay which I was bothered by.

Great tool to use for talking about sex from a Christian perspective.

This is one of the best historical narratives I've ever read. The author masterfully discusses centuries of English history by focusing on some of the most influential women to come to power, and discusses where their strengths, weaknesses, failures and triumphs, culminating in the monarchy of Queen Elizabeth I. I learned a great deal about English history from this book, and was introduced to some fascinating characters and battles that I have heard about but not fully understood their significance. Finally, this book was fascinating in how it details the ways women held power in a man's world. History lovers will have a great time reading this book.

I bought this book to replace the one I loaned a friend, she liked it so much I am buying this for me. This is my Fourth copy because I keep loaning it and people forget to return it to me. It’s very well written! I love the Author, Helen Castor. She has the ability to immerse you into the book.

There are already many excellent reviews on this site regarding this splendid offering from Helen Castor who presents succinct yet sufficiently detailed synopses of the lives of four remarkable queens of England. Her starting point is the death of Henry VIII's son Edward, leaving the country to face the prospect for the first time of being ruled by a woman, Henry's surviving daughter Mary I. Castor then circles back to the stories of much earlier royal women who almost achieved sovereignty but were thwarted by the overriding belief that "the weaker sex" was not capable of ruling independently of a man who would legitimize her power and control of the country. Having just finished rereading Penman's books about Matilda (Maude), her son Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, I wanted to remain immersed in this fascinating period of English history and read about these women from a different point of view. Castor is very clear about why the women she discusses were deemed to be "she wolves," yet she never becomes strident in her criticism of a world so incapable of recognizing the worth of these women who strove for power, yet ultimately failed. Very easy reading and quite accurate and informative. Highly recommended for lovers of medieval history.

The author does a fantastic job of putting a human face on history. Her analysis us thoughtful and her impeccable organization keeps you from getting lost despite flying through the space, time, and convuluted family trees. Couldn't put it down.

If you're looking for pop-history, this probably won't suit you. This book is real history. It's a look at several women who either ruled or sought to rule England in the years before Queen Elizabeth I. It's mostly sympathetic to these royal women, though not uncritical.There's a lot of detail, a lot of names, a lot of history covered.If you have an interest in the English monarchy and the wars and internecine workings that formed it, this is an excellent book.

A relatively weak start ends in fine fashion and the author's style and research come to the fore. While the early chapter on Matilda suffers for a lack of primary material and some weak assumptions the other chapters each get stronger and even having read other authors on these reigns I found plenty of new stuff to keep me interested. At the end you can't help feeling that its circumstances that have the greatest influence on the success, or not, of the she wolves.

I really enjoyed this. It seemed pretty well-grounded historically (I did not spot any glaring errors, and I've done a bit of reading on the subject) - as a previous reviewer notes, it would have been nice if the sources had been a little better presented. It's more of a "further reading" list rather than a guide to specific statements. The author's voice is a good one, and personalizes the characters. I also appreciated linking the earlier queens to Mary and Elizabeth (and poor Jane Grey) and the compare-and-contrast. It's a long read but worth it.

I had eagerly awaited the release of this book and waited until I could take my time and read it slowly- taking notes if I wished. I wasn't disappointed! The book begins with a genealogy of the Tudor Succession and as Edward VI is dying. The book is an utterly fascinating, eminently readable, treatise about the tradition of female rulers prior to the time of Elizabeth I.Included are:Matilda: Lady of England 1102-1167Eleanor: An Incomparable Woman 1124-1204 (long lived indeed!)Isabella: Iron Lady 1295-1358Margaret: A Great and Strong Laboured Woman 1430-1482and, as the books returns to the time of the Tudors and the death of Edward VI, in "New Beginnings"Mary and her disastrous marriage with Philip of Spain. The book ends as Elizabeth I is handed the reins of of government and becomes both the King and Queen of her kingdom.Each section is preceded by a both a genealogy as well as a map of the Kingdom as it existed at that point in history. Very helpful while you are reading about the constantly changing boundaries of the various countries. The genealogies really made me realize how small the pool of available spouses for royal marriages really was at the time. Papal dispensations for consanguinity matters must have been a steady source of revenue for the Church! Ms. Castor has an uncanny ability to write non-fiction that reads as enjoyably as fiction. I was sorry when the book ended - wanting more of this truly riveting history. The struggle of female rulers really was the the beginning of the fight for women's rights and the fact that these amazing, talented, strong women managed to rule as they did is a wonder. I wonder how many modern women would have the tenacity and determination to breach the boundaries of proper 'etiquette' as these female rulers did. It boggles my mind at how strong and focused they must have been. No doubt they would be the sort of successful women who would, to this day, be called She Wolves, baracuddas, or another word that begins with the letter b----.I wished that the book had more illustrations - but then I always wish that. I always want more images to pair with the words in a book. The included 8 pages of color images are well done - but more would have been better (of course!) This book will, I think, hold wide appeal to history buffs - especially those who are Anglophiles as I am, as well as for people who study women's rights and societal issues.I will be on the pre-order list as soon as I hear about Helen Castor's next book !

So many people are offended when someone tells them their physical ailments or pains are "all in their head". The truth is that more than 80 % of illnesses and pain IS in fact caused by repressed emotions hidden in the unconscious. So, it IS in fact often times "All In Our Heads". This book is wonderful, but people are so offended by the title and the suggestion that their precious illnesses and pain are not "real". This writer does not say they are not real, she is merely trying to help people see they could be free of what ails them if they would address where they symptoms are in fact coming from. She provides case after case of people whose emotional struggles were so intense that the mind tried to protect them from the feeling or memory and caused a physical malady in order to distract them. Her book is more proof of the brilliant functioning of our unconscious minds that tried to keep us safe at all costs. This book and others like it can set people free. But their minds and egos stand in the way of understanding her message. I loved this book, and the brave author that spent so many years truly helping others and having the courage to write about them.

Although interesting, this book didn't quite keep me as engaged as I was hoping that it would. I would've liked a little bit more of the medical basis (facts) behind each case. Still, it was a worthwhile read.

A fabulous, insightful book reviewing psychogenic illness, while reviewing the evolution of such in our understanding.

I would like to give this book a much higher rating. I admire Dr. Sullivan's understanding and compassion for the very real suffering of patients with psychosomatic illness (but I cringe at the titles of both versions of her book with their long-standing negative connotations for the general public. I believe they cancel out most of the good this book could have done to promote this compassion in others.) I believe Dr. Sullivan is deeply sincere and makes a number of excellent points I personally agree with from my education and experience in psychology (too many points to go into in a short book review).However, applying the label of psychosomatic illness (even in a somewhat modified way as she does) to ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is just wrong. To her credit, Dr. Sullivan does say: "Do I know that for sure. No, nobody does." She says her reason for doing so is based on what she believes is the lack of evidence for an organic disease. In reality, (and despite the appalling lack of government funding in the US for research) there is a mountain of evidence which has been collecting since the 1980's from researchers dedicated to the study of this disease in the US and other countries, with some of the most profound research coming in the most recent years, some after the writing of this book.Dr. Anthony Komaroff at Harvard Medical, both a researcher and clinician in ME/CFS since the 1980's, gives a summary of the evidence of biological disease from the 80's through 2013 in a video that can be googled entitled, "VIDEO: Dr. Anthony Komaroff - CFS Research: Recent Progress and Challenges".For the sake of brevity in this review I will mention only a couple of recent highlights in research being done with new biological technologies.Gene expression studies have demonstrated dramatic results in ME/CFS relative to fatigue and other major symptoms of the disease such as immune dysfunction and autonomic system dysregulation, as well as a new understanding of the complexity of the biology of fatigue. (An overview of some of this can be seen in a series of youtube videos by Prof. Alan Light, one titled "60. Gene expression markers of ME/cfs / " )A name that must be mentioned is Dr. Ron Davis and his Open Medicine Foundation, End ME/CFS Project at Stanford University. Dr. Davis was recently named by Atlantic magazine as one of the 7 most outstanding innovators of the century for his landmark work in the field of genetics including the development of new research technologies (which led to the mapping of the human genome and more); he is presently working with 3 Nobel Laureates, 6 members of the National Academies of Science, and others creating new research technologies that are producing dramatic findings (work published 2016 and 2017).Davis and his team have been examining energy production through metabolites (particularly relative to the mitochondria at the cellular level). They have found extensive alterations in the levels of over 100 metabolites in the serum of ME/CFS patients. Dr Robert Naviaux's research, according to Davis, marks the most "important and groundbreaking" development in ME research so far. Using 20 metabolites, Naviaux has discovered a 'diagnostic signature' for identification of ME/CFS at a more than 90% accuracy level. The disruptions in metabolism affect 7 systems in the body, not just the production of energy (giving biological evidence of the many other serious symptoms of the disease).(For a brief insight, google the youtube video: Scientist Ron Davis Tells How We Are "Fast-Tracking" ME/CFS Research )There is a saying in medicine (which Dr. Sullivan herself has used): FIRST DO NO HARM. More inaccurate labeling of the disease as psychosomatic such as in this book, though I think well meant given Dr. Sullivan's level of information about the disease, is greatly adding to this harm.If Dr. Sullivan and others are willing to revise their conclusion of psychosomatic disorder for ME/CFS based on the whole of biological research, my admiration for them will increase exponentially. Well written and argument end but it misses punch and depth. Not a book I would recommend. I managed to read til the end though.

For health carers, stories and anecdotes are important ways of communicating knowledge and understanding of particular conditions and disease and this book nicely exemplifies this learning in a realm of medicine which, by comparison with others, is severely lacking in terms of understanding of brain functioning. It also looks at the origins and history of the mind body dualism and nicely elicits its flaws. The only problem is, like many such books, the continued repetition of the theme becomes tiring as ones gets further through the tales. As a clinician and scientist, my misguided expectation was of better scientific data to support the anecdotes, but considering the target audience, that should be regarded as irrelevant, for it is the stories, the tales and the anecdotes that have the power to change a readers thinking on this tricky topic.

I understand myself better through this book, and am consoled.

An enthusiast is, I think, the perfect guide to an interesting subject of which we know little. Alain de Botton is one such docent and The Architecture of Happiness is a delightful overview of the eponymous subject. This is not a history of architecture but rather a meditation upon why it matters: how it impacts our lives and affects our moods; what are the component parts that make it a success or failure? There are general observations about the classical tradition and Gothic styles and the radical break of modernism. So radical was it that even professionals had difficulty, for a time, distinguishing between engineering and architecture. The author considers all styles worthwhile and seeks out the best within them.De Botton writes beautifully and passionately with helpful photographs or renderings that compare and contrast what he is extolling or criticizing. The final two chapters ("The Virtues of Buildings" and "The Promise of a Field") are particularly fine. In them, he discusses (among other things) order, elegance, balance, and coherence. The promise of a field is a paean to the spaces we occupy that were once either uncluttered or naturally beautiful in their own right. De Botton argues that if we are going to plop down a structure in the midst of nature (which already contains natural order, elegance, and balance) let us at least make it a 'best effort'. Put thought and consideration into the process rather than just utilitarian or worse, adding another scar on the landscape. Let's make cities like Edinburgh or Bath--conceived, planned and executed with purpose, not the awful sprawl of London or Los Angeles. I couldn't agree more.Very worthwhile.

I had never read anything by Botton before picking up this one, so it was not only an architectural journey, but a stylistic one in terms of writing, as well. It starts off with pessimistic, albeit realistic views of architecture and its limits. It sounds so pessimistic in tone at first that you wonder where the book's title comes from, which draws you into it more. The ideas presented in this book are substantiated with plenty of real life proof, from Le Corbusier's mishaps to Frank Gehry's playful escapes. I wish the author would have been more direct in his language, as his ideas are not in need of pompous language to get across. I also would have liked to see at least one allusion to a work of Frank Lloyd Wright.None of the arguments in the book are earth-shattering, and they shouldn't be. De Botton's ultimate purpose of the book is to convert the "non-believers" of architecture who believe that the profession is nothing more than fanciful, unnecessary ornament. It successfully proves why we need architecture in a very gradual way: first, if you believe that who you are depends on external forces (not a very demanding concept for even the most cynical), then you can come to believe that who you are depends on where you are, followed by who you are depends on the built environment around you as much as the people in your life. After he adds this concluding link in his chain of persuasion, de Botton provides a list of five virtues that any happy structure should reflect: order, balance, elegance, coherence, and self-knowledge.

This book approaches architecture from outside the field and begins to answer questions that architects have recently forgotten to ask. (What is beauty in architecture? What is style and in which should one build?)Required reading for architects and anyone considering buying or constructing a building.

I bump into way too many people when in Manhattan. This happens because my head it tilted too far up, in awe of all the beautiful buildings, instead of head down, trying to finding the gaps in people's steps to get where I'm going faster. Of course since Lehrer has told us that Proust was a neuroscientist Proust is now more widely mentioned, though probably not read. One would need to take to his bed.... It encourages us to ruminate about the things we make and see. I have given a copy to a young girl who wants to go into architecture as I believe it will widen her horizon. Most of the tips are accessible, easy to implement, and helpful to jumpstart my work. There are a ton of tips in the book, but they're broken down into distinct sections, depending on your need. I'll be referring to this book for quite a while!

The book's format makes it easy to find quick productivity tips for areas of your life that need improvement. I especially found the section "Having Productive Meetings" especially helpful and will be sharing some of these tips with my colleagues!

Before this book, I often felt like I was spinning my wheels with little to no self-direction and finishing 80% of 5 different things without actually accomplishing anything. I have purchased all 3 volumes of these books for gifts. Really good for seniors and to prevent eye strain.Both the word list & the puzzle itself is enlarged. Most books just have large print for the word list or the puzzle but not both. Will purchase more.
