To start Pliny the Younger (not to be confused with the elder) lived from 61AD-133AD and was a notable lawyer and administrator in the Roman Empire. He certainly lived through some turbulent times living through the terror of Domitian who killed many leaders of the Stoics. Later after Domitian was assassinated Pliny and his friends Suetonius and Cornelius Tacitus condemned Domitian and vindicated Helvidius Priscus against his charges. He spent a career in various government positions and finally commissioned as the emperor's rep. in Bithynia and Pontus. Anyways this collection has a good introduction explaining the life of Pliny which is an added bonus when reading his letters. The introduction and letters really helps one become acquainted with Pliny the man and value the live he lived nearly 2000 years ago. This collection of letters contains an assortment of intimate personal correspondence with friends on various topics and book ten of this collection contains his correspondence with the Emperor Trajan. Of the more famous letters are the ones he wrote to friend Cornelius Tacitus reminiscing about his uncles and his own experience during the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. His own experience is interesting, discussing as he and his mother left Misenum they were traveling down the road when the massive volcanic cloud engulfed everyone in total darkness (scary stuff). Also of importance is his correspondence with Trajan which highlights some of the early encounters with Christians and Pliny seeking of advice from Trajan on dealing with the issue are worth looking into. Also contained in the correspondence is a treasure trove of interesting examples dealing with the administrative aspects of the Roman Empire which are quite fascinating also. In his letters to Trajan, it seems that Pliny had an admiration of the Emperor Trajan and vice-versa which is an interesting dynamic to their correspondence readers should pay attention to.His correspondence with his friends is an illuminating aspect on the life of Pliny that helps develop the humanization and respect for our Roman ancestors that one should get through historical enquiry. Take for instance his letter to Cornelius Tacitus (book 1, #6). It's apparent that he wasn't a great hunter and would rather write (he was a good writer). However this time out he was able to kill three boars without changing his "lazy holiday habits," joking to his good friend about it. I find such exchanges thousands of years ago captivating, showing the human side to these important historical figures. The Letters of the Younger Pliny are a good source to look into during this period of Roman history to see the dangers and excitement in which these people lived (there certainly was a lot of it). Definitely recommended to those who are interested in looking into our ancient past.

I would recommend this book for anyone looking to study Roman history. These are late 1st century/ very early 2nd century letters written by eyewitnesses evidencing social and political Roman history, including the criminality of the first century Christian movement. The letters have a personal component to them alotting a more in-depth perspective. Cleanly translated to English. Pictures attached.

Classical writings are the core of any great Liberal Arts education. Pliny the Younger’s Letters provide glimpses into the Pax Romana. From the eruption of Mount Vesuvius to his correspondence with Emperor Trajan, these letters are a treasure.

I'm really enjoying this. Bright, newsy letters. Generally social in content, sometimes describing serious issues like an important trial, but not grimly. Mostly letters between Pliny and his friends, though the last chapter is letters he wrote to the emperor. I will read this book more than once. Excellent quality of writing.

These letters are a window into Roman life aroound 100 AD. I was amazed at how contemporary Pliny's ideas and attitudes seem. And a contemporary lawyer would have no trouble understanding the work he did. At the same time, the way he lived was very different from the way we live. Even very wealthy people now get along with few, if any, household staff and no slaves, at least in this country (the US). Pliny had lots of both.

I purchased this book mainly for Pliny's two letters describing the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii, which are the only surviving first hand account of the eruption. But I also learned a lot about Roman life and politics from reading the other letters. This wonderful book gives you insights into life in the early Roman Empire that you won't get from modern histories. How fortunate this book survived for nearly 2,000 years.

Pliny's letters are simply a delight. In this world of instant communication we forget the vast distances letters had to travel in the past and therefore the care that their authors put into writing them. Pliny is no exception to the rule, his letters are teeming with light and a love of life and contemplation. But if nothing else he gives us a window on an age that peaks the imagination like few others.

I found this to be an interesting collection of thoughtful, soul-baring essays, which are by no means given over to "Sunday School answers". I suspect that author might say that "Sunday School answers" contributed to her loss of faith. The author shares an admirable level of honesty and personal integrity throughout the volume.Search for an interview at vox.com to learn more about the author as that how I came to know about her and this collection of essays. As for the organization of the book, it seems that most of the essays had been previously published in a wide range of journals, magazines, etc. However, that in no way is intended to be detracting - just the facts. For my personal taste, the book could have been better organized - more thematic, if possible - but I'm glad that I purchased and read it.Finally, I hope one day to read her next published collection and that it might be of a wandering soul that has found peace and fulfillment.

"Interior States :Essays" takes a hard look at Fundamentalism in America from its roots to the current state of affairs with a vice president who abides all things done by a faithless president. The author’s essays about growing up in evangelical Protestantism are eye opening; she argues against the faith she was brought up in with clarity and grace. It was during her second year at Bible school when she read "The Brothers Karamazov" and entertained for the first time the problem of hell, how evil could exist with a benevolent God. When O’Gieblyn finally stopped calling herself a Christian in her early twenties, it was because “being a Christian no longer meant anything…the gospel became just another product someone was trying to sell me.”Her essay on "Hell" pointedly asks how Christian churches today can remain silent "on the problem of evil, for fear of becoming obsolete,” calling it a willingness to tailor Christian values to whatever the audience wants. However, it is O'Gieblyn's essay "Exiled," that I find so remarkable. It certainly clears the fog (in my mind) about Mike Pence's acceptance to serve under Trump. Now I know why he smiles so benignly when Trump throws out his falsehoods—Pence is a Daniel-like figure behind the throne of an "angry, irrational king," waiting patiently for the political path to clear so he can return America to its Christian roots.

I took notice when I realized that three of my favorite recent reads (“Sniffing Glue,” “Midwestworld,” and “Dispatch from Flyover Country”) were all by the same author—Meghan O’Gieblyn. Naturally, I was eager to get my hands on “Interior States,” a generous collection of incisive observations about what we believe, who we’ve been, and what we are becoming. O’Gieblyn’s points of entry are the Midwest and her own evangelical upbringing, but she investigates these subjects so deeply and smartly that one begins to see complicity branching everywhere into our cultural narratives and biases. To read these essays is like a having doctor show you x-rays and then having it hit you that those serious-looking shadows aren’t only on the film—they’re inside you.

The essays are all well worth the read. You'll get a deep insight into growing up as an evangelical Christian in the Midwest in the 90's and early '00's. Christian rock music, Christian colleges, Christian megachurches, Star pastors, Christian amusement parks, Creationism, the Apocalypse, Hell-- all that and more gets discussed. And don't think that just because the author has walked away from her faith that the things she says in the book are slanted against religion or against people of faith. Really, like Christ's words in Matthew chapter 23, the essays are more just slanted against shallow faith and hypocrisy. I find the writing to be resonant and relevant for anyone seeking an in depth look at the state of American Christianity today.

"What does it mean to be a believing Christian and a Midwesterner in an increasingly secular America where the cultural capital is retreating to both coasts?"So begins the back of the book description of Interior States, but it does not take the reader very many pages to see that only the geographic part of this description fits Meghan O'Gieblyn. She frequently describes herself as a non-believer, so the promotion of this book starts off misleading potential readers. That might not be enough to reduce the book's star rating, but there are other problems that make this not really a recommended read. As often happens with essay collections, there is a lot of unevenness in the writing here, but the overall tone of the book is really quite sad. O'Gieblyn notes from the very beginning, in her preface, a discouraging picture of the Midwest she lives in. She indeed is unhappy with " the challenges of living in the Midwest when culture is felt to be elsewhere." That along with her ongoing negativity about her growing up years and her lost faith doesn't give the reader much hope or encouragement.Of course, not every book is uplifting and inspirational, but in the end, there seems little reason to have read this. One gets the feeling of reading someone's personal journal that really wasn't ever meant to be seen by anyone but the writer. Her essay, "Contemporaries," gives a depressing summary of a meal with friends that she then extrapolates to a larger "we.""I think: Nothing has changed over the past half century. We are still hopelessly coupling, still confiding to one another at overpriced restaurants our private moments of transcendence. When people look back on our era, they will make no distinction between then and now...In the future, the whole swath of later modernity will call to mind the image of people eating delicacies and talking about the state of their souls--ust as, when someone mentions the medieval period, we picture people toiling in ditches." Perhaps I am being too critical, but this essay in particular ends in no hope at all. She quotes a writer friend, "All of us have a lie that we hinge our entire lives on." And at the end of the essay, she is still sharing that "My dreams are rife with shadows and menace."There is more, including a critical piece on Alcoholics Anonymous and "Midwestworld" that starts with an anecdote where she shares the description of teachers and aides assisting children at the end of the school day, children "all of the boundless and boisterous and shepherded by adults who bore the unexpreeive fatalism of people who work professionally with children."In the end, "as it turns out, the material world is every bit as elusive as the superstitions I'd left behind." Sad conclusion. I would hope that the day will come when the author finds something more worthwhile in life than this, but, for now, Interior States is really not worth the read.

From the Back Cover

In 1996, a twenty-three-year-old soldier in the British Army was flying over an African desert on a routine parachute jump. He had a lot to look forward to-a long career ahead of him in the army, a beautiful girlfriend back home. But those dreams were cut short when his parachute failed to open at eleven thousand feet. He had cracked three vertebrae and had come within a fraction of an inch of severing his spinal cord. A grueling eight months of physical therapy followed. Bear had to retrain his muscles to do all of the things we take for granted-how to sit, to stand, to walk, even to breathe. Eighteen months after his accident, he overcame incredible odds to reach the peak of Everest. The Kid Who Climbed Everest is a tale of courage and determination. Bear's quest for funding for his expedition, his seventy days on Everest's southeast face, and a narrow brush with death after a fall into a crevasse at nineteen thousand feet, make this story an essential read for anyone who's ever had a dream and made it come true.Bear Grylls was brought up on a small island off the south coast of England, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Now one of the youngest and most sought-after motivational speakers, he relates his remarkable experiences to audiences and corporations all around the world.

I love the show "Man vs. Wild." The star of the show is Bear Grylls. As I was looking through the local book store, I noticed this book by Bear about climbing Everest. I love two things, Bear's survival in the harsh conditions and Everest stories. It seemed like a book I would love. The book starts with a little background information. Bear (which is a nickname) was in Britain's special forces. But an accident in which bear was parachuting out of the plane, and his parachute did not open completely and he broke his back; this caused him to get out of the military. He was doing little until he was asked to climb Everest. This was his motivation to start life again. The book journeys into the heart of the high country. This is dangerous territory, and a unforgiving landscape. The account is interesting and scary at times. There are close calls, sickness, and weather that is going to stop everything. But in the end, Bear makes it. He was the youngest Briton to do so. Though I might never climb Everest, these books always provide for me some powerful inspiration to climb the mountains that I travel. Bear is the man!

I have read this book several times and never fail to be drawn into it. Bear is a fascinating man in his own right, but getting the whole, unabridged account of his Everest climb is a blessing. He's perfectly willing to share the bad with the good, from mistakes that were made to the truth of those last few steps to the summit itself. His modesty and honesty are refreshing. If it's bravado you're looking for, you won't find it here, and that's one of the many things to appreciate about this book. It's well-written, funny, emotional and intriguing.I can only hope that people read it for what it is and not what they expect it to be. I see a few reviews here that tell me some people went into it hoping for something (though what, I'm not sure) and were irritated that they didn't get it. This book deserves to stand on its own and not be compared to others. It is what it is-- a wonderful tale of a real man, with doubts and fears and weaknesses, who just wanted to accomplish a dream.I thank him for sharing it with us.

Great book and very motivational. Not many people know about Bear's background and early times before he got his own show and this book shines a bit of light into it. It's an easy read and not boring. While it's not a motivational book of that sort I felt like I could take on the world after reading it.

Let me start by saying I thought this book was excellent. I've read about all there is when it comes to Everest and this is not your typical Everest book. Bear, best known in America for the TV show Man vs. Wild, does an excellent job bringing you into his climb of the worlds highest peak. What the "other" Everest books always seemed to lack, in hindsight, was humor, something this book has no shortage of. Probably one of the most interesting and favorite parts of the book for me were his descriptions of the mountain. He does a great job painting the picture of what he sees, something I've always thought the big name Everest writers have lacked. His descriptions of the view (top to bottom) and the western Cwm/South Col really helped me envision a place I will likely never see. Bear is a storyteller and it shows in this book. As I said before, I found the humor a pleasant surprise and I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions. But Bear also knew how to bring the book to a serious point when the story called for it. His story is amazing and inspiring. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

This account of Grylls' climb is interesting and captivates the reader who is interested in adventure mountaineering. Reading this book coupled with watching Everest Beyond the Limit Reality TV series helped give me an appreciation of the mountain and the difficulties that it presents to climbers. Grylls has a casual tone that guides the reader on a exciting trek up the biggest mountain in the world. This made an excellent vacation read for me. Recommended.

Not the best writing (whoever edited it was asleep a lot of the time, as there were grammatical and spelling errors throughout) HOWEVER, I found the details of the experience fascinating, as I always do when it comes to stories about climbing Everest. I will read every book on the subject to continue to convince myself that I NEVER want to do it myself!

Bear outdid himself in this one. More detail of what it is really like to climb Everest than in any other book about it I have read

This book is well written and an easy read. The book is a great account of climbing everest and for that alone it's worth the read. However, I got much more from this book. It's full of real world philosophy that can be applied in business or your personal life.

I used a previous edition of this book in my first year university college, and it was really good. However, what I really hate is how this newer edition (which my wife later got for her math course) contains some errors which existed in the previous edition. Seriously, guys, stop bankrupting poor students and killing trees - new edition requires more than just reordering end-of-chapter problems and numbering chapters from 1 instead of zero.

If you need this book for a class then get it, otherwise don't waste your money. It is poorly written and there is much better information online by simply searching what you are trying to learn.

This is an amazing text. Very clearly written and has a wealth of knowledge. Perfect for an introductory course in abstract mathematics and proof writing.

book is terrible. It throws proof techniques AND new concepts at the student at the same time. So you are learning induction and the binomial theorem at the same time. Has almost no example in the back so you don't even know if you are studying properly. Other books similar to this focus on proof techniques first, using very easy concepts (such as proofs about whether or not certain numbers are odd or even). once the techniques are established (direct proof, indirect proof, contrapositive), then they introduce higher topics and have you apply the techniques. This book just throws it all at you at once. My class had almost 20 kids to start. after the first test it dropped to 8, and it's all because the book is worthless for practicing problems.I've taken topics past real analysis and abstract algebra, and this is by far the worst book i've ever encountered. this WILL discourage students. I just hope teachers read this review before applying it to their course.

The book is used and sold for 3 times and is in really bad condition. The price is too high for this book

This book provides a very brief introduction to mathematical reasoning. You will get a glimpse of this in the first chapter on logic and proofs where you will learn about propositional logic, conditional statements, sets and quantifiers. You will learn how to formulate conjectures and write some pretty descent proofs. This book contains several sections that are motivated from topics in number theory (diophantine equations, congruences and the Euclidean algorithm) before digressing into a separate chapter on basic mathematical notions from the principle of mathematical induction, recursion, and the binomial theorem to a quick look at real and rational numbers as building blocks for later sections...The subsequent chapters, however, are a jumbled up assortment of topics from various courses. There is a chapter on functions and bijections where you will learn about cardinality and permutations (linear algebra); a brief foray into cryptography with a section on public- and private-key cryptography and the RSA scheme (number theory); an overview of the complex plane and the properties of complex numbers with a look at De Moivre's Theorem (complex variables); and finally, the fundamental theorem of algebra, which concludes with a look at equations over a finite field (abstract algebra). The inclusion of these topics does not necessarily make this book a comprehensive one, as you are barely scratching the surface with any of these topics. So let's be clear about one thing: this book has breadth, not depth. There is a lot material to gain insight from, which does gives the reader an idea of what is to come in later years. So I suppose you can make of this book what you will and take from it what you want. However, I think it could have been great had it not tried to cover so many broad topics.

An excellent introduction to the subject. Gilbert uses basic proof techniques to take the reader through some basic number theory as well as other interesting topics such as cryptography and complex numbers. A wonderful book all around with clear proofs and interesting problem sets.

Great book

It was a quick read (finished it in a few nights) that wasn't bloated with filler info and was easy enough for a non financial professional to understand. There was a good review on investing in traditional asset classes that was later compared/contrasted to P2P lending. I found the overview on the various P2P lending platforms in chapter 7 & 8 to be very helpful. I also liked the analysis of P2P lending as it applies to historical and current events. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good primer on P2P investing.

This short book provided a great reviews of some investment strategies. It then provides more details on 7 p2p lending platforms.

Great Information!!

I've known Stu Lustman for a while now, and he actually wrote a fine piece on the subject for a magazine I was publishing at the time - so yes, I can confirm: he's a good guy, knows this stuff inside out, and has been around (the space) since the early days, and so have I. Reading his "P2P Investing 101" has been a pleasure, as it brings me back to earth, and to those early days. It offers great and unbiased perspective (most of the others writing about this have something to sell, an ax to grind, or a certain color to give) on one of the great revolutions of the recent past in the business of lending. And what a ride it has been so far (10 yrs+). And while you're not going to find out a lot about that here, you are going to get a very nuanced and accessible overview of what we're talking about, why (or why not) you want to get involved today, how it compares to the other asset classes, and where to go to as a retail investor if you're ready to put money at work. 8 short chapters well laid out, finishing each one with a concise summary, pros and cons, and some action to take. Also, he's not afraid to say things as he believes it, like in: "Bonds do NOT pay us properly for our risk. Marketplace loans do and WE get to select the risks we want to take". In passing he talks about real estate options, the economic outlook and how it could impact the asset class, the different (7) platforms that retail can access today (very happy to see my friends at AHP being mentioned here - make sure to check them out, as they are awesome!), the tax implications (I suspect he will add a chapter soon to discuss the impact of the new tax bill that just passed?), and some strategies to start with. This is a very good and up to date primer on the subject. For anyone who is looking for an easy intro with do's and don't in p2p/online lending & investing, look no further. My 5 cents? Prefer real estate over small business over consumer lending. Be diversified, in asset class and in platform. And make sure to follow Stu through his blog and other platforms, as there is regular intel to grab for free.

As someone who is new to investing I found the book very informative. The book was a quick read and easy to follow. I'll definitely be following Stu's blog.

This is a well written book, but it is for situational anxiety. If you have anxiety 24/7 (like I do), with no one trigger, this will leave you a crying mess on the floor.

Jennifer Shannon's superbly humorous and insightful book was just what I needed during an especially anxiety-riddled family visit I experienced. The three assumptions kicked in automatically ("I must be 100% certain. I must not make mistakes. I am responsible for everyone happiness and safety") and I was exhausted and upset when my family finally left. Then I reread the chapters on "Purpose and Plan," "Lowering the Stakes," and "Practicing Praise" and immediately felt better. Now I have a plan for the next family-gathering: I'll keep "Don't Feed the Monkey Mind" by my bedside and read one of the helpful tips each evening so that I don't continue feeding my own little mental monkey. I love this book! And the delightful cartoons always put a smile on my face :-) Thank you, Jennifer Shannon!

I've struggled with anxiety for 10+ years, been on medication, regular visits to a therapist and I can say that none of that has been as effective to me as this book. Jennifer Shannon was inside my head throughout the entirety of this book, I often caught myself saying things out loud in disbelief at how much I could relate. Not only could I relate, but her way of changing your thinking was something I feel as though could actually help me on a long term basis. It's also a great read for anyone with loved ones who have anxiety, really helps you understand the struggles.

Great book and a quick read.I have many monkeys to tame and this book shows me how.I highly recommend it.

An old Scottish saying is ‘Better the devil ye ken than the devil ye don’t’. This book really helped me understand my ‘devil’ : my ‘monkey’ mind Anxiety. An easy to follow, interesting book with excellent ideas. I learn best when using analogies, and the ‘monkey mind’ analogy flows through out the book and makes perfect sense to me. Well written and the author injects just enough personalization to make her relatable. One of a very few self-help books that I’ve actually enjoyed reading. The little illustrations are adorable too! I really found this book helpful and recommend re- reading it once again to thoroughly absorb the great information inside.

Daughter loves the book... says "author was inside her head!", which is good. She is using some of what she learned already with satisfaction. I want to read it next!

My group clients are enjoying discussing this book together and applying it to their lives. The "Monkey Mind" analogy is very powerful in understanding why we as humans have anxiety and how we can take a step back and approach life with less fear.

This book had some great suggestions for dealing with anxiety. I like having a mix of stories and then key pointers for making change. There was also a lot of good analogy and rationale mixed in, which helps me remember what to do, and when to apply that advice.
